Thanks! I think it will be the most exciting and most replay-able one yet. I’m going to try to get it out within the next couple weeks. So far I have 5k for it and I anticipate it being at least 15k.

When this game is out, it would double or triple your fan base. ( it’s fabulous in two chapters already )

Wow, I’m glad you think so!

Actually, my goal is for TMT to sell more in its first month than my DAM trilogy has since 2014. Hence my huge focus on replay ability, humor, and character development. I know that sounds crazy, but it’s doable. It won’t be easy at all, but to put it in simpler terms, I would love for this to be as popular as Life of a Wizard, Zombie Exodus, The Lost Heir, Community College Hero, etc. So far I think I’m making a decent run at it, just basing off this beta thread.

Considering what I have seen so far you could achieve your goal easily. ( Btw how much have you sold since 2014 ( copies ))

Trial of the Demon Hunter and Captive of Fortune have sold about 9k copies total in the past three years. Since Foundation of Nightmares is probably coming out in September, and then the whole trilogy will be going on Steam, then, I think the sales could go up a few thousand in the next couple months or so. Even so, that’s still just “meh”.

The bestsellers seem to sell something more like 20k in one year, which is my ballpark goal for TMT.

Not trying to come off rude but writing of trial of demon hunter and TMT are on very different levels.

Oh, I 100% agree, and I’m actually glad that so many people are realizing this, haha. I wrote TotDH when I was 17, I rushed it, and I didn’t realize how important good characters were. I’m still proud of it and I think it’s okay, but nowhere near as good as TMT.

Now I’m 22 and I’ve written three HGs, and all that experience has helped me write the vastly better TMT, even though it’s only about 10% done right now. My writing is better, the characters are much better, the replay ability is massively better, and I’ve incorporated lots of humor, which most people seem to like a lot.

Nope, not at all. :slight_smile:

It’s a setting. The genre is filled with similarities that go back to back to back. We’re a product of what we read and play.

I wrote a similar post on another thread. I’m a big fan of Raymond E Feist. Did he rip off Gary Gygax? The similarities are very close. Did Gygax rip off Tolkien? Again, close similarities. You can keep following the chain. Tolkien is similar to earlier and similar to earlier.

My works, especially Life of a Wizard, is full of the generic fantasy tropes. Heck, the whole idea that there is such a thing as “tropes” says a lot. :slight_smile:

No, there is no rip off here. If there was only one fantasy book allowed to be written, then there wouldn’t be such a thing as a genre! :slight_smile:

Whelp, I think this is at least the second time I and/or my game have been named dropped in a forum disagreement, only for me to come in belatedly after the fact and see that it has been all taken care of quite nicely already, so yay! I always miss the good fights (haha, just kidding, I can be socially anxious and that suits me just fine) :sweat_smile: I don’t intend to stir the pot there. But since you asked for my input… :smirk:

In general, I find it hard to believe any story having to do with demonic lore or magic to be wholly independent without any overlap with other stories, since they tend to be based on myths, superstitions, and traditions that may well predate the written word, when much of human culture and morality tales were passed down through storytellers. But anyone who has read, for example, the earliest renditions of Cinderella all the way through to the most modern, knows that a lot can change through time and interpretation. What really sets a work apart is the individual authors’ tone, point of view, characters, and genre of choice. In that way, I may feel a healthy competition with some of my fellow writers, but only in the sense that it pushes me to want to do better when someone’s work blows me away. I tend to feel quite supportive of everyone else on here who I know is also working hard to bring their visions to life, no matter how closely aligned it may be with a work of mine or not.

I think they are quite different in that sense. And for me to feel personal ownership over the concepts of Heaven/Hell, angels/demons, morally gray or sarcastic demons, magic or things that at first glance would pass for magical, and possession, would be disingenuous indeed. As much as I love Vex’s seeming disdain for humans, I’m not sure we could stake a claim over the “monkey” insult, either. Just seems like a common sense evolutionary reference, if you happen to be a demon who considers the human race to be inferior. :laughing:

Heck, if anything, if a reader enjoys either SYP or this one and is looking for another to read, it just makes it that much easier for me or @Samuel_H_Young to be able to suggest our games to one another’s fan base. I’m all for supporting other HG authors since it buoys the brand as a whole. No need to feel threatened.

TL;DR
What does this WIP and SYP have in common? At first glance, a biting sense of humor and some similar supernatural lore that I in no way invented. Characters, time/setting, and stats are used very differently. I’d enjoy reading more. Good luck with it! Can’t we all just get along? :hugs:

Thanks, every body! :smile:

@violethikari

Okay, the money issue should be fixed now. It looks like I put the money gain in parentheses but didn’t actually *set them.

EDIT:

This poll is really interesting! Thanks for everyone who voted. It looks like after Chapter 2, Zaleth rocketed up very close to second place, and Rigel lumbered all the way down to last place. (Among the leaders, of course. Verim, Petre, and Killian will likely never reach the same amount of votes as Zaleth and the ROs.) Obviously Violet will probably have first place forever. :stuck_out_tongue:

Who wants to possibly see Chapter 3 tonight?! I’ve had the day off work and a big surge of inspiration, so I’ve written 2.5k so far today. Hopefully I can push through and write the remaining chapter in the next couple hours, but there’s still a bit to go and I’m getting sooo tired.

Hey if you’re up to it go for it. But if not I’m content with waiting.

MAJOR UPDATE!

Woo! I wrote 4k words today, which is the most I’ve ever done. This allowed me to finish Chapter 3, which amounted to a little over 13k. Although this is the shortest chapter yet, it’s also the most exciting, and it has the most replay ability, which is saying something since the replay ability in this WIP is already massive!

The total word count for the TMT demo is now at over 73k. Feedback, comments, typo spotting, and bug spotting are much appreciated!

Author’s note: Verim, Petre, and Killian are characters that are inspired by Vernon, Peter, and Alex, three people who bullied me viciously throughout middle school and high school. Have fun.

I’m try this new chapter out when I get home tomorrow cause I’m tired and have work in the morning. I wished I didn’t have to work.

New chapter was good–I don’t have a ton to say about it, I could tell it was shorter than the rest but I can also clearly see that the Killian fight is pretty wide. I missed the interactions with more of the main cast, but figure we’ll get back to that soon.

I have noticed, and I might have already commented on this, that the game doesn’t keep track very well of whether the characters have been met or not, so they end up being described as if for the first time multiple times (Rigel gets this at the library and then at the job the next day, Violet gets it at the library doors and at the cave …). It pretty much stopped in this chapter, but it was an issue with Mabelin coming to the fight, since I know who she is just from being in this thread, but me and my MC hadn’t encountered her in the story of the game yet

i let demon take control (honestly drawing a blank on his name), and f**ked their shit up. That’ll teach 'em to mess with me.

Yeah, the Killian fight has 5 options to begin with, and then more options that branch out from whether or not you don’t fight him/fight him/use Zaleth’s powers, so it’s the widest part in the story yet.

That’s one of the most difficult things about having such high replay ability: although in most of the chapters, many or all of the main characters are present in significant amounts, depending on what choices you make, you might not see them at all. Mabelin, for example, actually has the most interaction out of all these chapters, but unless you went to the chess club, sparring arena, and guard job, you won’t see her at all til Chapter 3.

I’ll work on tracking when the MC has met the ROs so I can make that all go a bit more smoothly.

@SheaMcD
Glad you liked that part! It was fun and satisfying to write. And c’mon, Zaleth is a super memorable name. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

God I had some really bad 7th grade flashbacks reading the scenes of Killian. That was the worst year of my life.

@phoenix_wolf
I hear ya. 10th grade was one of my worst years and pretty much what inspired this whole Killian arc. Except I never won, lol.
