The Eternal Library: a Romantasy Retelling (WIP ~ 245k DEMO)

Hi, I’m enjoy a lot in your story, may I ask two questions?
If Mc can make a cloth to all RO, what RO favorite color would be and what clothing style they like to wear the most?

Hi there! I’m glad you’re enjoying The Eternal Library!

For the most part, the clothing the characters wear in the story are the ones they like best. Maybe Mari and Sevitas are always wearing a King’s Guard uniform, but they quite like them. Magic armor is comfy, actually. Temphesta wouldn’t like to be confined to a specific color or style, other than bold and elegant. Collin likes gold, green, brown, and neutral colors, and prefers clothes he can fight in to ones that befit a royal. Dorian generally chooses indigo, silver, and black, but looks good in just about everything. Angelina wears riding dresses whenever possible, in jewel colors as well as those that camouflage her in the forest. Gemma likes soft fabrics and light dresses, as opposed to her heavy wool uniform.

The Eternal Library: Public Demo Update :tada:

It’s been quite a while since I last released a demo update for The Eternal Library. I wanted to wait until I had enough new material to make it worth your while, and I’m happy to report it’s finally time!

This update gives you access to the story up through chapter six, which includes approximately 38,000 words of new material. Current word counts are as follows:

Public Demo: 218k
Patreon Demo: 245k

Links are in the top post of this thread.

I’ve been writing this WIP a bit slower than my previous projects. It’s so nice to go at my own pace, chipping away at it without stressing over deadlines. My work-life balance is wonderful and it makes me enjoy the story that much more. I’m not rushing through nor sacrificing time I should be spending with family. Though this means it takes longer to complete each chapter, it’s well worth it to avoid burnout and maintain my love of this story!

New material includes:

  • Prince Kedrick’s return, with Dorian and his team (which might include the MC).
  • Time with Gemma, Marienna, Collin, Dorian, or Sevitas, depending on the RO.
  • The return of Prince La’rast.
  • A very happy Princess Khanna.
  • Diplomatic strategy.
  • A chance to help Prince Collin win over the court.
  • A fiasco at a feast.
  • Royal intrigue.
  • And much more!

As always, please let me know if you find typos, bugs, or continuity errors. I do an editing pass but don’t have time to play through the game every time I update, so I absolutely appreciate knowing if I’ve missed something or messed up.

I hope you enjoy the demo update!

If you know anyone who might enjoy it, please share this with them! :crown:

Thanks so much for following along as I write The Eternal Library! :raising_hands:

It’s great you’ve found a balance that works for you - Take your time! I think your love for your story and your characters is a wonderful thing and it is super apparent in your writing. It makes your work even more engaging, and makes the sort of broader story universe you’ve created feel all the more rich and ‘alive,’ if that makes sense. Plus purely selfishly, I’ll always prefer less frequent but more thoughtful updates over the reverse

I believe I found an error in chapter 1. While Princess Angelina arrives in the kitchen and asks for my help, it’s described as her wearing a blue dress that stands out among the black and gray uniforms of the staff, and then it’s said she’s wearing a pink dress. It didn’t make much sense, haha.

Hi there. So I checked the section in question and the blue description is for her eyes, not the dress. Perhaps a matter of reading quickly and the colors being swapped in your imagination? That’s easy to do.

Thanks for reading!

I hope you enjoy it! Thanks for your kind words!

Thank you! I’m so glad to hear you feel this way. It makes it so the process is enjoyable and I’m glad that comes across in the writing. And I agree, less frequent but substantial updates are better than more frequent, especially since every time I do a major update it clears your saves. Your support and understanding is so appreciated!

"First of all, I would like to say that this story is incredibly well-written; there are very few errors, and its virtues are many! I find it fascinating to see a prince so dedicated to kindness. Prince Colin possesses a charming charisma, and he is, without a shadow of a doubt, a captivating character! I really enjoyed the plot twist that the sorceress brought to the story, and I find myself wondering what her next steps will be and how important her daughter will become in the future, or even in upcoming negotiations—though I truly hope she isn’t subjected to any harm.
One thing I noticed is that, although my protagonist is always surrounded by secondary characters, it is quite difficult to build affinity with them, even though she is kind and protects Prince Colin. I’m not sure if this is a bug, but I would love to see this improved.
Also, even though the protagonist’s life has taken a major turn, I would still like to see more attributes and details added to the stats section to enrich both the story and the character. Adding achievements would also be highly interesting. I am absolutely certain that this story has great potential. You will always have my support as a reader.

Hi Yasmim. Thanks for reading and for your kind words. Achievements are added once the game is finished, so those will come later. Glad to hear you’re enjoying the story!

Waaa you tease! I really thought Collin was going to kiss MC! The tension is building up so nicely that when it finally explodes I’m sure it will be cathartic  but I agree that it wasn’t a good moment. I really haven’t been able to test other routes bc I’m highly biased towards the prince… he is truly so princely. I do wonder though… do we get to advance more in Collin’s route in the patreon version? Or is it still on the works? :eyes: (yes, I’m a simp) Thank you for sharing your work with us, it’s a pleasure to play your game, the time you’ve taken to construct this wonderful world really shines through! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I’m so glad you love him. He’s such a great character.

The Patreon demo includes the first 27k words of Chapter 7, which has some intense moments between the MC and Prince Collin, especially if he is the RO. Does it advance the relationship? Absolutely. Is there kissing? Not exactly but the closeness is worth it as the stakes are so much higher because of what happens in ch 7. The moment isn’t right for that first real kiss yet, but it will be worth the wait. :sparkling_heart:

Thank you so much for reading this story and for sharing your enthusiasm with me. Your support is so appreciated! :raising_hands:

Hello! Found a bug for a pronoun variable. (Sorry, forget which chapter exactly but it’s in or after Ch4, and don’t want to spoil so will blur line and context: after the attack on the castle, choosing to go with Dorian to find Kedrick, Dorian says: “You know I will,” the Kitherin assures him, “though I do believe Name can take care of herself.”

I’m playing a nonbinary (they/them) MC, so this was a jumpscare  jk

Maybe this has been pointed out and/or fixed in a newer build (I play the public demo), but wanted to report anyway. Really enjoying the demo so far, I get so torn on which paths to choose because I want to help/investigate/visit everything and everyone haha.

Hi! Thanks for that error report. I’d accidentally tied that particular reference into the gender variable rather than the pronoun options. File should be updated now. If you find any other mistakes like that, I do appreciate you letting me know so I can get it sorted. So glad to hear you’re enjoying the demo!

Found another one  In Angelina’s POV.

Her first thought is for Name, whose last letter seemed so hopeful. Is she still alive? Scared? Safe? What has happened to them? ← them is correct, she is not

I will keep an eye out for anything else as well.

Fixed. Same mistake on my part. File updated. Thanks much for catching these!

This is brilliant! I love this! It’s very well written, there is a lot of tension, suspense and hooks that keep you interested. The succession chapters were amazing.

Two things to note and consider:

  1. Political marriages are a necessary aspect of that world where kingdoms need to forge alliances and links. Love may or may not develop, but it’s a bonus rather than prerequisite. So maybe Collin should say he wants marry someone he has affinity with rather than “only for love”. That would be naive and he would know that, but he would also know that a union where both partners care for each other is better for the realm.

  2. Similarly, why would the King object to a match that unites two kingdoms? He needs a character consistent reason to object or have a “better” plan himself.

Other than that, this is something I will definitely bookmark.
