The Eternal Library: a Romantasy Retelling (WIP ~ 140k DEMO)

Noted. I will see what I can do to add more details in the beginning for Marienna. Thanks for playing and for the feedback!

A few thoughts on this, from the author’s POV:

This is a slow-burn romance, and it’s a fantasy as much as a romance. The story has to get going before it makes sense to have longer opportunities to be with the other ROs, with Collin being the exception. There’s very little time with Sevitas as well, and not a lot with Dorian. You get to spend time with them if you choose during the ball, but it takes time to get to know the other characters. This is by design. There are a bunch of short encounters with Gemma, but Angelina is going to be a long distance relationship for the first part of the game, and opportunities to be with Marienna alone are scarce.

Chances to spend more time with individual ROs (other than Collin) really don’t happen in a big way until chapter five. Because this is a romantasy, it’s a fantasy as much as it’s a romance, which means romance isn’t always the central theme. The MC’s journey is a big one, and there’s a lot going on in the first few chapters story-wise.

Also, please keep in mind that the demo represents a little less than half of the content the game will contain. There is a lot of story yet to come, and the fact that it takes time to build relationships with the ROs deepens the meaning behind each one and makes it more realistic, especially given the culture of Minare and the differences of status between the MC and many of the other characters.

Anyway, I’m rambling now, but I appreciate the feedback. I hope some of what I’ve shared makes sense from a storyteller’s perspective.

Enjoy your weekend!

Edit: Here’s that intro with more details painted in for Marienna. Sevitas still gets a few more words and I may edit this more, but I think this balances it out pretty well as far as first impressions go.

Yeah no problem I get it, and I did feel less of what I was feeling in the later parts of the demo.

Good to know! I appreciate you pointing out the lack of detail in Marienna’s intro. That was helpful.

Often a first draft has places where more details are needed, and I don’t always see them clearly. Feedback is appreciated!

There is a free tier on my Patreon that delivers author updates and content I don’t share anywhere else. If you’re a fan of The Eternal Library, consider subscribing for exclusive access to a growing collection of POV scenes, author insights, and polls with choices that sometimes make it into the game! :crown:

I’m not committing to doing interviews for all of the ROs and NPCs as I don’t want to slow progress on the game and good gracious are there a lot of characters in this story  but I think it will be fun and if I space them out over time I ought to be able to get to a good few of them!

Thank you for sharing your questions and voting on your favorite characters! :raising_hands:

For all characters, what do you think and how do you feel about access to free public education and open library access for the masses?

(I ask this because while some may think it is a good idea, it could still make them feel uneasy; and they may be unsure why it makes them uneasy.)

Temphesta is currently winning the poll and I love that for her.

Thanks, @AnneWest for the question!

If anyone else has questions for the characters, please let me know!

I’m honestly a bit surprised Tyne, Petre and Leonz are doing so poorly!

Character Interview: Temphesta Brae :sparkles:

Welcome to the first character interview for The Eternal Library!

Today we sat down with Lady Temphesta Brae to get her thoughts on questions sent in by fans.

What was your first impression of the MC?

When MC Tian came walking in to Dradan’s chamber my first day back in Minare I couldn’t believe my luck! One look at those vivid eyes and my soul recognized the MC’s through the tangles of time. Threads woven long ago returned to the Tapestry. I knew instantly that my Tian friend would play an important part in the unfolding of Minare’s destiny.

What is your opinion on the Fae?

Some of my favorite friends are Fae. I endeavor not to make enemies of them. Like people, each Fae is different so generalizations fall short, but, as a whole, I dislike fewer Fae than I do humans and I enjoy a revel from time to time.

Do you have a secret talent or hidden hobby?

I like to knit by a crackling fire on cold winter nights. I know if I’m knitting it’s been a good day. Not too exciting, not too demanding. And, yes, I can conjure clothes with magic, which is basically weaving elements of the material world, but actually knitting with yarn is a delightful meditation and a satisfying way to create, albeit slow. I may have used magic to help my knitting needles along a few times.

What outfit would you choose for a first date?

That would entirely depend on where the date was occurring, wouldn’t it? The weather, the season, the time of day… There are a good many things to consider. In general, I’d choose something with grace and modesty, indicative of my impeccable taste.

What do you think and how do you feel about access to free public education and open library access for the masses?

Nothing is free. Everything requires effort, and schools and libraries require funding. Should all citizens in a kingdom have access to education and books? Absolutely. Whether they should be publicly run or privately run is a different question. Public education can be beneficial or detrimental, depending on how it is done. Private education tends to be better, with scholarships available to those who don’t have the funds to pay directly. Substantial contributions made from public treasuries to well-run private schools is often a more effective approach, which can be seen in the depressing empire-run educational facilities of Varvash and the thriving private and cooperative schools in Rzskador.

Cat? Dog? Or dragon?

Cat. Without question. :black_cat:

If you could go on holiday anywhere in the Nine Seas, where would it be?

I’d enjoy a mountain retreat in the Northern Kingdom of Rzskador during Yule. There’s nothing like snow sparkling outside, fires roaring inside, hearty food, and people who appreciate the quiet joy of winter. :snowflake:

:sparkles: Temphesta :sparkles:

I hope you enjoyed this Interview with a Sorceress!

Prince Collin’s interview will be coming next! :crown: Patreon members get early access to it tomorrow!

I’ve chosen to release Temphesta’s interview first as she was winning the poll when I checked it for inspiration a few days ago. As of this writing, our beloved fairy godmother is losing to Angelina and Collin. :woman_dancing:

Burn the witch. Unironically burn her with extra kerosene.

Not sure how to respond to that, tbh. :woman_shrugging:

Temphesta is tossing out ideas with the caveat that everything depends on how a thing is run. She’s not claiming to have the solution or to be an expert in the subject. And this isn’t meant to spark political debate. It’s just a fun exercise to see what a character might be thinking.

Character Interview: Prince Collin

Welcome to the second character interview in an ongoing series!

Today we sat down with Prince Collin Ga’vaan to get his thoughts on questions sent in by fans of The Eternal Library

What kind of ruler would you like to be?

Fair. Just. Benevolent. Peaceful when possible and more than capable of defending the kingdom at need.

I don’t wish for the crown. It is a weight I’d prefer someone else carry, but the responsibility has come to me and I will wield it in the name of Minare’s citizens.

I’m only beginning to understand how many things need to be managed in order for the kingdom to thrive, but I know a lot of good people. These lands are ours to share. If we work together, I expect we can accomplish miracles.

What is your opinion on the Fae?

My opinion is ever evolving. I was taught to be wary of Fae, but the more I learned about them through the years, seeking out Minare’s Fae in the high forests of Crost, the more I yearn to make allies of them. Now, one of my closest comrades is a Fae-blooded Kitherin. I am intrigued by Fae and mages of all sorts, and drawn to the vast potential of magic.

Do you have a secret talent or hidden hobby?

Does magic count? My magic is subtle compared to the power most Fae possess, and nothing compared to the Kitherin, but mine nonetheless. I have kept it hidden all my life, but for a few close friends and my tutors, Master Tyne and Master Leonz.

And now my Tian friend knows…

You said you had been noticing the MC for years. Other than chance injury, what has endeared you to the MC so suddenly, and, given all that’s happening, are you in a good headspace for a romantic partnership and what are the depths of your feelings?

Ah, the mystery of the Tian. We grew up together, if you can call it that when my duties and the MC’s were so different, but we have seen each other countless times over the years. When we met in the library a few weeks before the incident with the door, I was happy to insist MC take the book to finish the story. It was a good book, meant to be shared with more than myself, my siblings, and whatever nobles may have picked it up.

When we collided in the hallway my world changed. Sharing my meager abilities in an attempt to heal the damage I caused sparked something in my magic. Something in my soul. I can’t explain it, but when we’re near there’s a kind of call. A resonance I cannot ignore.

Am I in a good headspace for a romantic partnership? [laughter] Why wouldn’t the Weaver send me one more wave to ride through the chaos? In all truth, I’ve been yearning for a closeness that transcends lust and reaches into something real.

What is life without love? It is nothing. Every story I read speaks of it, and I have longed for it all my life. My magic tells me this is true. If the MC chooses to love me, I will love with my whole heart, my being. My soul. If the MC chooses friendship, my loyalty will be as steadfast as time.

We have work to do together. I know that with certainty.

What do you think and how do you feel about access to free public education and open library access for the masses?

I think the royal library should be accessible to any who work in the castle. Surely if we can trust our staff to tend to the library we can trust them with the books. Harrick keeps impeccable records, anyhow. As for the rest of Minare, public libraries are found in most cities and towns, as are public schools. I imagine both need attention after the neglect this kingdom has seen beneath my father, but I expect Master Tyne would have a few things to say about improvements.

I think tutors are essential, no matter how someone is educated. Tutors and masters who take on apprentices. There is no substitute for individualized learning, which is why parents are often the best teachers of most basic skills. Classroom settings can be helpful in many situations, but a home can be an excellent learning environment so long there is an available family member or community tutor with access to a library.

Cat? Dog? Or dragon?

All of them.

Dogs are a joy and excellent hunting companions. Cats are essential as mousers but also comforting little creatures to have around. A dragon is worth a thousand soldiers against a foe, with far better armor.

I do enjoy animals in general. Going for a walk or riding through the forest and listening to birds sing calms my mind and soothes my soul. Watching a hawk fly uplifts me. Watching deer graze invites peace.

If you could go on holiday anywhere in the Nine Seas, where would it be?

I’d like to visit the mountains of Crost again and spend a fortnight there with the Fae, then holiday on the coast for some surfing and long walks on the beach.

:sparkles: Collin :sparkles:

I hope you enjoyed this Interview with a Prince! :crown:

Error has been fixed and a new file uploaded. I only uploaded the file for that chapter so hopefully it won’t mess with your saves.

I’m taking a bit of a break from writing atm, but hope to have a public demo update sometime in September. Thanks so much for reporting that issue and for reading The Eternal Library!
