That’s a great place to use the stat
Love the game wish u all the best
@Poyraz Thank you. I’m making steady progress on the last chapter
There are only about ten infantries and ten arbalists with you on the rampart, but none of them seem overly worried about the attack just yet.
Should be infantrymen, or infantry soldiers/troops if you want a less gendered term. Infantries is not a word for multiple infantry soldiers.
A second later, a small black object whizzes through the air and strikes one of the arbalists directly on the nose. He topples back, crying out as blood spurts from his nostrils. The soldier collapses onto his back, unmoving. His nose is badly broken and gushing with blood, but you can see his chest rising and falling faintly.
Firing a sling upwards is difficult. A soldier on the walls will definitely have enough time to see and duck.
The arbalists aim into the crowd and fire their weapons, illiciting several screams of pain. They work feverishly to reload their weapons, but there are simply too many rebels. Borik flies down the steps two at a time with you and the soldiers in tow. When you reach ground level, you see a servant in her white gown pulling on the chains operating the portcullis with all her might
Medieval castles usually use a dual portcullis system for redundancy and to trap invaders… but not a rule.
There’s a sharp twang as your bolt flies through the air. With wide eyes, Ricard hurls himself to he ground. The bolt passes inches over his head as he falls, instead burying itself into a peasant’s arm behind him. The peasant howls and falls back into one of her fellows. As Ricard lurches to his feet, you work desperately to reload your weapon, but it’s a notoriously slow process. By the time he’s upon you, you’ve only just loaded the bolt. You aim and squeeze the trigger just as he knocks your crossbow to the side with his pitchfork.
If you miss with the crossbow, you should already be preparing for hand to hand fighting. You should know the reload time is huge.
Wheat is used as a currency here, even to buy things, but even in medieval times, people typically use gold and silver for currency. Wheat will spoil under certain conditions and has a very low value to weight ratio.
There are a few scenes where the player reloads a crossbow on horseback, but this is unlikely unless you’re using a very light variant, or in later times where lever and crank systems reduced the amount of force needed.
Good luck
Thank you for the feedback. I’ll see about addressing these points soon
Major update:
Chapter Ten, the final chapter of The Cruel Guardians, is now out on the demo. This chapter is 17k words, making the total word count of the demo 184k words. I just need to write the epilogue and do some polishing of the game, and then I will submit it next month. I hope you enjoy the new content; please let me know what you thought, and if you encountered any typos or bugs.
In Chp 6, whole code diving I noticed that there are some flavor texts with the servants and soldiers based on if we deduct any wheat from their pay, but it’s not showing up in the actual scenes.
@ArsonistChef Thanks for pointing that out. That was a good find. I’ll fix this soon
Minor update:
I added the epilogue, which was 3k words. Now I will focus on bug fixing and proofreading before submitting The Cruel Guardians to Hosted Games. Thanks to everyone who has provided feedback over the years.
Here we go:
The arbalists aim into the crowd and fire their weapons, illiciting several screams of pain.

Several of them have lost their lives, swallowed by the hoard of peasants.

When asked to spend bushels, it is helpful to see your current amount without having to use the stat screen.
Dear lord Arthur Barqet,
Lord.
By the way, the MC’s name isn’t mentioned in the game very often.
Barqet Manor is by no means struggling, but with a population of only 2,000 or so subjects, you’re on the lower end of the social ladder as far as nobility goes. Some nobles rule over vast cities several times as big as your village, after all.
As far as medieval settings go, 2000 would be a town, not a village
The next day, you spent nearly the whole day asleep with a hot water battle under your head,
bottle
Somehow, you don’t know if that comforts you or makes you feel even more unease.

You smile indulgently. “Well, if you want Harold to be even more effective than he undoubtedly is already, I’ve got a secret for you.” You lean in conspiratorially and whisper, “Crows hate the smell of vinegar.”
Vinegar evaporates quickly, making it useless for driving away birds. If it seeps into the soil, it will also ruin it.
?, your trouble-making male puppy, is proving difficult to train so far. He has chewed on multiple expensive pieces of furniture, and barks stubbornly when you or Flai reprimand him.
? has been a little difficult to train thus far. One morning, when you reprimanded her for peeing on your bedroom carpet, she got nervous and peed even more. You’ll have Flai work on that.
What’s with the question marks? Some misfiring script?
Good luck.
@ChanceOfFire keen eye as always. Thanks, I’ll fix these errors soon
Tho I couldn’t get relations with Flai more then 53 despite numerous replays. It was still a pretty entertaining Update ![]()

I hope you release this so you can see how much we appreciate your work. ![]()
@Zahmed
I’m going to work on balancing variables soon, although Flai’s relationship can get a lot higher than that
@AnonamysNerd
Thanks, I’m eager for it to be released this year

Thanks for pointing that out; I’ll fix it shortly. Also, welcome to the forum!
Great game, Im a huge fan of your magician games, I remember reading them amd being drawn in by the world!
This game is good but it lacks a few things.
Romance, funnily enough the best part of the magician books, especially the first one was the romance and character relationships it was rich amd savoury. This one I’m not sure if as much emphasis was put there, cause I see it is there but like it starts later on and is more subdued. I understand you’re planning a sequel but just like what I feel is you magnum opus end us with a bang. This one ends like a limp noodle not sure if it’s my fault cause even though I was aiming for a flai Romance i actually didn’t get a lot of intimate scenes with her. I also like how you allow us to have multiple lovers not sure if it’s intentional though.
Now I did not try the other alternatives to dealing with Jelok at the end but the diplomacy ending is soo lackluster yes we talk to her and stuff but to spice it up and maybe but that nice bang! before the sequel maybe we have to do a dangerous sequel to cleanse the land and everyone’s getting involved or something. One thing, again we are going back to magician but yes it sucked it ended in a cliffhanger but it could be enjoyed from start to finish in a good ending leave us with you signature bang!
Also those rings are freaking cool, maybe please give them earlier and more options, maybe you pick one for free and the other two are bought cause dang magic is fun and this is low fantasy is seems i want cool magic rings
@Coy_Cok
Thanks, I’m glad you’re a fan.
As far as romance, you’re pretty much right on the head when you say it’s slower and milder than my other books. It basically came down to the nature of the story, with the MC juggling a myraid responsibilities as noble of their manor, and the plot being split between two main parts, the anarchists and Jelok.
However, in TCG2, romance will become a lot faster and spicier as all the pieces will come together
I think I understand what you mean about the diplomacy route in Chapter Ten not being as exciting as you expected, but this may be due to the nature of it being more, well, diplomatic. I encourage you to try the Military or Shanist Ritual routes to see of those are more exciting, but let me know if not!
I’m glad you liked the magical rings. I do have plans to have Kanam, the ring merchant, come to your castle with even more rings in TCG2
Been replaying it since yesterday. Great fun !
I like it when authors take time for the little details. Like our horse, I like that it has the spotted leopard coat (here’s a Knabstrupper for reference). Makes at all immersive. Horse were much more diversely colored till the 18th century as we can see on many paintings.
Also, I don’t know if I’m the only one with this problem, but game demo crashes repeatedly at the same spot in chapter 5 :
@TheNobleOne
Oh interesting. That’s a beautiful horse, pretty much what I was envisioning for the MC’s stallion
That should be fixed now, I just forgot to update the demo files
