Mopsie has a boyfriend already, and her head is so far over her heels that it would be nigh impossible to turn it in your direction.
But I love Mopsie too.

Hi, everyone. I was thinking of doing a new readthrough of Tally Ho! with a character that has high Observe, but I never seem to pick the choices that increase that stat. Anyone has a few in mind that could steer me in the right direction?

In chapter one:
- …a refreshing pomegranate champagne cocktail, a popular drink amongst the cognoscenti.
- “Most distressing… to be sure.”
- … will need to simply change the subject when Aunt Primrose is over to avoid discussing the book.
- …Cygnet-Signet is a most unsuitable marriage prospect for Rory. This alliance should probably be broken off.
- I turn towards Aunt Primrose.
In chapter two, take the Regina path and choose:
- I am concerned about the logistics of transporting her, me, and my luggage.
- I look at the letter
- What book are you reading (followed by) I was wondering whether you are really allowed to read while on the job. Just out of curiosity.

Getting the special herbs from Mopsie goes a good way on giving your team a boost. They’re stronger depending on the amount of money you give her when you’re sneaking out during the night, But, like Urban said, the right way to win the race varies quite a bit, considering how different your stats might be.

I see. I usually cant afford to give Mopsie more than a 15 bucks coz ive already spent it on Fig’s costume

As a side note, your choice of rowing partner doesn’t affect the stats of the boat or your speed; it only affects the complication you run into en route (nausea, animal friends, producers, or the chance to approach the Pennywhistles) (and your response to that may affect your speed.)

I’ve never seen Ho’s code, so I can’t really speak with certainty, but the broad strokes of the boat race go someting like this:
-
The type of decoration you pick for your boat is associated with the stat it raises. So the Renoir-inspired boat raises Culture, and getting cheers from the crowd by posing as Impressionist painters is also associated with your Culture stat
-
Getting the crowd to cheer for some of the other boats involves Persuade, I think? But I once played as a valet who had reasonable Persuade and a high Abrasive stat and it didn’t work, so maybe you should look out for that
-
Speaking of Abrasive, I think a high dose of it is needed to spurn the crowd, but I never managed to get it quite right
Those early picks can help you get a head-start. One of my special techniques is also throwing the herbs to one of weaker boats, which helps them keep Firesnuff lagging behind in third place. One of the other big choices in the boat race involves those three paths, and the characters you’re going to be dangling with: left path is Firesnuff, middle one is Deputy Hardcastle and the left one are the Cordwainers.
I don’t really remember all of the options, but I hope this helps (spoilers): if you pick the middle path, you’re going to get attacked by that gang of kids who live in river islands and eat bread. One of the big choices here is facing “The Champion”, which is a very big loaf. You can either win it with Intellect, Persuade, or Bold (which involves just powering through it).
Right side involves the, uh, surreal misadventures with the Cordwainers. The only way I discovered out of the illusions is using Intellect to remind the Cordwainers of their motto, which gets them and your crew back on their boats.
I only went once through the left path and fought Firesuff’s crew, so I can’t really tell you much about that.
So, there you have it. It’s a bit incomplete, but hopefully it should steer you on the way to get the ending you want. Devoting a bit of time for your RO shouldn’t stop from getting first place if you play to your strengths, and the stat explanation page so give you good directions in ways to use them. Hope it helps!

(Edited your post to swap left and right – left is Firesnuff, right is the Cordwainers.)

I kept bringing up the pictures of the game I had in my head, only to realize that you were right all along, and that I still need to think to tell right from left and vice versa. Thanks for the edit.
You’re welcome. It’s been a bit since my last full playthrough of the game, and your question made me want to go back and revisit it. It’s lovely.
By the way, if you want to look at the game’s code, you can send your receipt to CoG’s email and I think they’ll give it to you. It sounds easier than the old method of trial-and-error, and I think it’ll make this and subsequent playthroughs a lot smoother for you.
Edit: by the way, @Alpha_Werewolves, I found this post by @Urban that details the main stats and choices of the boat race. It’s good help if you’re stuck with it.

While the Cordwainers are way more fun, my ex-boxer MC would never pass the opportunity to get receber over his nemesis. Defeating the woman, that I forgot the name, in a 1x1 duel is one of the most satisfying part of the game.
My MC showed her who was the true boxing champion!

It’s all very Jeeves and Wooster and P.G Wodehouse

Yes, it’s an homage to Wodehouse’s Jeeves and Wooster series, duly credited, and duly public domain; if you like the Blandings, Psmith, and the Drones Club Wodehouse style better, I am just finishing up the first part of my homage to those series!

I can’t wait until it’s available. Tally Ho! is easily one of my favourite adventures ever and I can’t wait for more this whole genre as one of my favourite periods in literature and “history”.
Tally Ho was so well done , I can hear Fry and Laurie easily bantering back and forth to each other the writing is superb!
