Love the glitchy chapter titles.

Not sure how I feel about having standard fantasy races as well as the character being a vampire / werewolf. Like … a birdman werewolf kind of takes the wind out of both of those unique aspects of the character!

Also Chronicler seems easier on the outset but you’ll hate yourself later. It’s like playing T-Ball all your life and then never being able to grasp baseball. Also the code is practically impossible to examine for bugs.

I get that, but I also think making the afflictions equivalent to species selection paints humans as the default, which I’m trying to avoid.

So, I’m still very actively working on this, but I may have bitten off quite a bit more than I can chew with as many weapon and magic options as there currently are. 17 character types, each with their own flavor text, is kind of a bit too much for my first project, and my progress has slowed to a crawl as a result.
But I really can’t think of a single alternative that will satisfy my standards, so I think I just have to keep at it. :pensive:

EDIT: Actually, on second thought, how would you feel if I were to cut the archetypes and makes the MC always be a mage? You’d still have the choice between magic types, and I’d be able to write and update way more quickly, and the mage path is always the one I’ve been most fond of anyway. It’s a lot I’d be removing, but I could totally revisit it in a later project, like I did with the skill stats.

I honestly wouldn’t mind if you cut all the archetypes and just kept the mage archetype. There are already quite a few magic types within the mage option alone so it’s not really a big deal. Also you should write what you like!

I actually liked the introduction you gave Mraenis, with the image and large text. It was like an collector’s card for a superhero, and given the vibe so far, it really fit.

Technoturgy the way I envision it is going to be a little hard to write for in this one, but there will probably be a technoturge in another project in the same world I have planned. There will be cyberware and such you can get later in this story.

Update:

  • Archetypes have been cut, MC is now always a mage. I’ve added the pugilist class to compensate a little.
  • Stats screen now lists your class.
  • Updated the lore section of the stats screen. Still not done with it.
  • A few extremely minor text changes.

With the new framework in, I’d like to say the next update will be coming soon, but I’m saying that to convince myself more than anything, really.

I read a Pyramid article that coined the term “zauberpunk” for a fantasy based cyberpunk setting, zauber being German for magic.

Tv tropes uses the term dungeonpunk, although that summons to my mind Bladerunner being about a Ranger named Deckard.

If you want to use a term other than “pseudo-cyberpunk.”

I’ll consider this, thank you. I consider this primarily a dungeonpunk with cyberpunk elements, honestly.

Updated!

  • The first quest can now be completed. The fight scene doesn’t yet use the combat system I was planning to use; it’d’ve been more work than it was worth for a simpler and smaller-scale encounter like this one. I’ll very likely implement it later on.
  • Altered most instances of Mraenis smiling. That wasn’t really in-character for them.
  • Very minor detail, but one of the default last names for Dwarves is now ‘Highchurch’, because I’ve been listening to the Adventure Zone.

The next update, in which two more characters will finally be introduced, will hopefully be coming soon, but you know how I am by now.

  • Chapters have been reflavored as days and nights.
  • The story now goes up to the very beginning of Day 2.
  • Added the introductions of three new characters; Herala wasn’t going to be in until later in Day 2, but I thought it made sense to bring her intro to the front. The new art’s not in yet; be patient while Chalk works their magic.
  • Added a more overt TAZ reference.
