Should I add checkpoints to the start of each chapter to make replaying my game easier? I played many games without any checkpoints, and replaying them feels like literal nightmare

Yeah, I am not sure if this is a good idea, so I hope people can give me some advice on that

Sure, if you want to! It’s fairly easy to do these days, there’s info here:

I personally have plans to do that for mine. Even if it’s only a one step back option, I’m going to add it.

Even if they don’t replay the entire game, they’re still getting longer play times.

I prefer checkpoints myself. Disliked Elements thread is why and I shouldn’t copy that here.

Personally I don’t like them, when I make stuff in renpy I disable wind back and load scumming since, in my eyes it defeats the purpose of hiding things.

I “set up puzzles” by simple things like remembering what a character did or something that happened.

Choice script is only able to have one medium of communication, words.

So I feel like just ruins stuff like that.

As for replayability, if a story intended going to be replayed, then it should have replayability.

Example, [spoilers] cyberpunk77 is a linear game with technically one ending. However the player has multiple choices throughout the game that can have different outcomes that don’t affect the ending.

Compare this to something like GTA5, which “technically has 3 endings”, however the player is given no choices or paths, so most people don’t replay the story, or play it at all.
Giving the game little to no replayability.

Your first play throughout is going to be engaging, so you likely won’t need check points, however if the game is dynamic enough, then your next playthroughs won’t need check points, because it should be uncharted territory, the same story with new plot points.

Sure you still save the princess, but what if you did it alone vs with a squad, small stuff like that.

CP77 one ending? Lost me there.

I didn’t want to say why I said what I said as its in Disliked Elements and Tropes.

But seems necessary?!

One word or sentence can be interpreted by author one way while reader interprets differently. A checkpoint at end of chapter to restart helps when this comes up. The line says this but REALLY says that. That is this not that. Ugh, oops, restart.

Witnessed it enough times to be annoyed by that.

The other is screen acidental shift when not intended as well. Happened enough to be annoying too.

Dude. Being forced to play some sort of 1 save iron man mode doesn’t make the game more engaging. I play plenty of Ren’Py VN’s and have never seen a player request less save slots or disabling rollback.

Yeah, please do. Personally I’m on the camp that for games over 1 million words it should be mandatory to have saves. Anything below that up to the author’s discretion, but always greatly welcomed.
