Seven days in purgatory (2020 Sept 5th, Chapters 3/7) (ko-fi open: Jan 6)

wait you’re telling me it isn’t a quirky slice-of-life

That’s what I really enjoy about this. For a lot of people it’s full of red flags and they’re uncomfortable, but my decidedly unstable fucked-up self is just enjoying living with my probably possessive probably co-murdereing wife :grinning:
Even if I’m better mentally than when I first replied to this, it’s nice to have something where someone’s self or their experiences can make the tone totally different, leading to vastly different experiences. I think that’s the sign of really good writing. There’s another story I kinda want to reference as an example but I don’t wanna get off topic too much

I’d love to know it! I’ve discovered so many enjoyable works because people told me my game reminded me of it.

Maybe you could let me know in a PM, at least for the aspects already in the current version? So you don’t have to spoil anything for anyone else.

Hm, okay. I’ll keep it short though.

Oh, that make sense. Sorry for suggesting the idea, then. I really am underestimating people capability to argue.

Don’t expect that from me, I’m dumb as a rock.

On another note, depending on what spouse did I’m keeping them, if they just kidnapped me I’ll be like :man_shrugging:

I see what you mean about why the elements that seem connected to thrillers for people who interact a lot with the genre would be pretty easy to not pick up on when you don’t interact with it much. A lot of thrillers and horror are built on paranoia and tension and it usually does that by taking generally normal and safe situations and making them feel unsafe. It’s why children feature so much in scary movies. A lot of things that seem like thriller aspects to us can seem pretty normal through a lens not assuming something bad is going on.

I experienced this backward when playing a game called Gone Home. For some reason (maybe the title maybe because the summary was vague) I assumed it was a scary game. The character arrives home after being gone for like a year or so to an empty house on a stormy night. Not inherently creepy but I just thought it was. You go through the game learning about what the family has been up to since you’ve been gone and pretty much none of the info implied a creepy undertone (there was one super small subplot about a ghost but it was super minor) but I was so sure it was a horror game of some kind because it just felt creepy to me. Even by the end, when it was clear it was about the character’s sister discovering she was gay, I still kept expecting to find someone dead or something and was thrown when it ended with the sister writing a letter to the character saying she ran away with her girlfriend.

So much of the thriller genre is keeping creepy undertones that when you go in without any assumptions about usual thriller elements, it’s easy to assume it is just a normal situation. Amnesia is a super common thriller trope, the person might have mentioned Finland being creepy to them since the character knows they didn’t use to live in Finland but now they live in the middle of the woods in a country they don’t speak the language of with seemingly little way to contact anyone if they need help if something goes wrong. To someone used to thrillers, it implies something will go wrong. It can also give a sense of isolation to some people which is also common in thrillers. The spouse can come off a bit obsessive to some with that weird mention about killing a bird and that blood pact thing which can make the reader unsure of their intentions. Also about the nightmares, while they do occur in other genres, they are always symbolic of something, and the image of a creepy house with a scream, a bloody bath, and a broken mirror seems to imply to me that the main character has some anxiety about some kind of murder they are connected to. Those were just the things that seemed connected to thrillers to me, but I also read and play a lot of thrillers so I recognize the common elements of it. But experiences are not universal and other people probably didn’t read the scenes the way I did.

I mean…not only amnesia, but the mysterious accident, odd location, withholding & overly adoring “spouse” who has unhinged stories, the eating/drinking of blood that seems normal to said spouse, the fact that it is mentioned that we “always come back” to them indicating that we have been in this state before, super weird dreams, etc…this is all pretty creepy/suspenseful/tension filled/ etc. I don’t personally get folks seeing this stuff as normal every day activity, buuuut to each their own I guess?

Opinions are valid, but the definition of thriller obviously means different things to different people, just as beauty does…or what is funny does…arguing semantics seems moot at this point, yeah?

Also, isn’t this WIP only few chapters in? Like we haven’t even gotten to the bulk of the story yet, so how can we really judge what it is/isn’t yet?

The demo was interesting. I wonder when the next chapter will come out.

okay so… i found some weird stuff in the txt files??
something about Tyr???
but anyways i wanted to ask if theres gonna be supernatural elements or not??? because i have a couple theories but im unsure.

For now, it’s ambiguous whether there are supernatural elements or not. MC can certainly believe there is.

The Tyr file is an easter egg for my other Wip (God Forsaken) that I ended up removing for now. There’s no way to remove files already uploaded in dashingdon though, so all the old files are still there / o\

Megan Fox’s proposal reminded me of a scene in this wip…. The part where she wrote “and then we drank each other’s blood”

i’ve been reading the theories in this thread and they got me like:

I think I’m developing Stockholm syndrome because I’m giving into Anthony’s romantic gestures immediately. Having a loving husband the moment I gain consciousness is just so convenient. I also have a theory that the MC was his partner in crime, and that’s why they feel comfortable with a knife.

To me that was just… MC knows how to cook and has muscle memory…

I dunno, the entire time I’m not actually seeing much weird going on. This is just a wholesome relationship between two loving people.

I’m still wondering if anyone else would get the same reading I did if they also, like me, did not read the forum post before playing it on dashingdon. Especially because of the “your spouse won’t let you leave” part. Like, I never tried to leave, so my spouse never told me they won’t let me. I don’t know that there’s even an option to try to leave; I don’t remember one existing. AFAIK, not being allowed to leave just never comes up.

waves Hello. I had my first read-through of this WIP over the past couple days. It’s currently stuck trying to load into chapter 4 from the end of chapter 3- not sure if that content is supposed to be available currently or not, but wanted to mention it, I can’t get farther.

This WIP is … fascinating. In a certain way, I’m reminded of ‘What Dreams May Come’, which is possibly my favorite movie out there or mighty close. But with a more concerning tone. I haven’t read any of the other replies or discussion, so maybe I’ll say things already said, I’m just wanting to offer thoughts. As a start, the way I think tries to actively and passively break down any cognitive dissonance I come across, and I believe that much of that which is in the story is intentional. I’m not certain if occasional leaks of gender dimorphism even not selecting the ‘know somehow that’s not true’ options near the beginning are intentional or not. There are some instances where it happens, so the effect is simply reinforcing things not being as they seem on a much wider scale. I don’t know if the intention is for the reader to not trust MC’s mind and self-identity, or not trust anything of where the MC is in a grand scale (ala dream, afterlife, lense of non-sanity), but the effect for me is more the latter, even as I’m certain the former is quite confused and mis-reinforced. As I haven’t yet tried other choices on this, I’m not presently certain if the instances in-game flip or remain the same regardless of reader’s choice of gender for MC. I’ll be curious to find out if they do or don’t. Other forms of cognitive dissonance are intriguing.

I have some theories about what is going on- but not all of the answers. To me, it seems as though MC is literally in purgatory, though I’m not certain if it is ‘sin by approximation’ (mad love for a spouse that has done horrible things without ~direct~ participation), or ‘sin in fact’ and that the MC joined in with some form of past atrocities. MC’s spouse seems very much to be either a serial killer or terrorist or secret agent. Both the MC and spouse are frightfully intelligent. I myself being 39 currently, realize the lives lived by these individuals must be crammed with uniquenesses in learning opportunities beyond the norm with an acuity to back it. We’re dealing with two genius level individuals, IQs likely above 150, with a ~variety~ and depth in knowledges acquired. One thing that I love about the writing is how the MC is given agency of accepting the deep peculiarities of their situation as ‘normal’ or recognize them as something ‘off’. And the intelligence written into the characters can’t be faked; we have a very intelligent/researched author on our hands here. XD The references of water make me think perhaps the MC really is in purgatory with their spouse who, though very likely psychopathic/sociopathic (or criminally insane in some manner or other) really does seem to love MC with that same mad depth. The reader and MC need to work in tandem to either overlook/blank out this or become concerned. It seems the MC may be stuck in a ‘forever’ afterlife with the spouse, not simply in the spouse not letting them leave but them not wanting to leave their spouse, and perhaps the manner of moving on being to go back to the water- terrifying. Probably, doing so just ends up with another round of amnesia and spouse pulling MC back. But clearly, not all is right in the psyche of the two. Two mad/insane?, broken, lovers in the afterlife- and/or some deeply engrained hypnotic suggestion. There’s cognitive dissonance in the amount of time the spouse has known MC, so I wonder if there are more dark tabboos implied there. I ended up asking the siren all of the possible questions. So the ‘How did I get to Finland?’ answer of ‘I don’t know. I’m only you, after all.’ struck me- if there was a crash into water it was either in Finland (not likely, unless amnesia wiped the arrival more completely than other things) or before; perhaps MC died in the crash with spouse and the setting has some collaboration of personal meanings between the two characters. How they speak multiple languages, seems to make their past more mysterious. I cannot quite say which of the two is likely to be more criminally insane, but I have a feeling if I lit a torch in the forest half of it would burn down with the gas waiting to be lit there. It may be spouse’s afterlife you’re trapped in, which is all about you as much as that mentality can be. I noticed that heading down seems to be… mentally blocked. A portion of MC’s mind unable to be accessed through what seems to be external influence (though heck, internal isn’t to be ruled out). The written romance is … like, seriously, bravo. It manages to be simultaneously sweet, disturbing, heartwarming, ominous, and possessed of brilliant banter. Though I don’t know how the story would literally change through the gender dimorphism option, the whole context does shift. Like, not having that myself, I feel as though this is a great study (ala character studies) as to how that perception affects reality- the perception of the reality, rather. Because you are doing wonderful things with cognitive dissonance in this story, and the story itself being as it is allows that dissonance in a convincing way. The ‘feeling’ that the story gives off ends up being remarkably similar to a movie called ‘Tidelands’, despite the stories being completely different. All said, I’m saying, I absolutely love this WIP, though I think its ultimate success or failure will be in the tying up of loose ends- what questions -do- get answered and which don’t. The character work is on par with Fallen Hero, imo, albeit a different sort of work, and the tone is as sharply honed as the wit of the characters. This could be something special, if the threads are woven right in the rest of the tapestry. I look forward to its future (groundhog day or not).

Serious question…are you stalking me??? Like seriously, reading this and…it’s me. Honestly I’m struggling with finishing, it hits so close to home that it’s scary. You know, other then the whole cough Yandere kidnapping

This is just so well written, especially the way being transgender is shown. I feel valid, for the first time in a while. So thank you for that!!! You have amazing talent and I hope to see lots more from you in the future.

I had the exact same experience when I first played. It’s so wonderful to be so weirdly understood. Even now, years later when I’m a very different person (I wasn’t even entirely aware I was trans when this was first released!), it still rings so very true. Even moreso, in some ways. As much as I love many WIPs here, this one holds a special place in my heart, in a way that I don’t think can be replicated.
