September 2023 Writer Support Thread

No that’s honestly so lovely, thank you! :sob: I have another one where the PC is 29 which is much more complete than Valentine’s, but I always sort of assumed it was past its time - I may take another look at it and see if it could be brushed up and put out there.

I certainly would be very happy if you decided to put out more games in the Cute Guys series whenever you felt like it. Doesn’t matter how much time has passed in between. Aquarium and Thanksgiving both work very well as stand-alone games and as a series. They are open-ended and kind of up to interpretation of what happens after so you could end it whenever you wanted, and I guess you did, but it is absolutely fun to learn about Casey/Taylor, even if it is bleak. It is also pretty neat that Casey/Taylor gets older with each instalment. Just little snippets of their life that always unravel a little bit more of their past. It’s great, I love it.

A little “emotionally vulnerable on main” edit before I lose my nerve: those games are also an inspiration. I want to make games that make other people feel like these games make me feel and I can’t even put it properly into words.

Progress on the Halloween Jam game is going well this far. Including code it’s up to 5800 words now, and two of the three main branches have been completed. Since a couple of the remaining branches will meet up with stuff I’ve already written there’s less than a third of the work still left. Maybe 2000 or so words to go, and then it can be put through beta testing.

When you are ready to testing send me a private link and I would put all in motion for the beta thread. Also glad you are doing so well

I’ve been making good progress on redrafting and rewriting things! I announced recently that I was going to redraft my own project since I was unhappy with a lot of elements with it, so now I am just in the swing of it. I’m hoping to finish my outline this month and start with actually coding the new version  . That might be a bit optimistic though! I want to go over a lot of worldbuilding things I did before with a fine toothed comb in order to ascertain what I think actually ‘fits’ with the altered vision I now have for a lot of things.

My only real concern might be that so much has changed that it’ll feel like a different story all together, but I suppose that hardly can be a bad thing if it will be for the better! I think one of the biggest things is that individual characters have a lot more of an ‘identity’ to me, even if I knew more or less what I wanted them to be like I always had this kind of feeling of them being ‘muddled’ internally. I’m working on making new artwork for them! One thing I’m excited for is the interplay between the relationships characters have with one another, since I’m always a huge sucker for it feeling like characters ‘have histories’ with each other that you get to learn about!

WIP Art I'm just sharing for fun

I also learned how to use loops and arrays over the last 2 weeks, at least choicescript ones! I am hoping to integrate them in order to make the recode much smoother as a process! I had to recode a test game several times while learning about them, though now that I’ve done it enough I’m hoping that I won’t mess it up too bad when it comes to the actual game

I had no idea that other gamejams for this exist. Do we have a thread for gamejams? Is there like, a board specific for posting these?

I use Visual Studio Code, and I MUCH prefer it over CSIDE, but the important thing is that you try each one and see what YOU find easier to use.

Thank you for sharing this. It’s brave of you. It helps those of us who are writing to know that it’s okay to put something up if it’s not working, even if you’ve far passed the line for the “sunken Cost Fallacy” to take precidence.

What’s an Itch page?

I’m gonna try the SHIT out of this game. LOVE me some Selkies.

Holy shit your art would be PERFECT for my WIP. TAT

Update for the week:

  • Thanks to Crow Armburst on the COG Discord, I figured out how to connect GitHub to my Visual Code Studio, which means I’m no longer afraid of losing my work if my computer biffs it.
  • Sitting at 37748 words ( I think this includes commands?) in the first chapter alone. TAT
  • Still not done with the first chapter
  • Still haven’t outlined the second
  • This week sucks. No holds barred.

I found out about this expo/jam through the Interactive Fiction Community Forum. I have an account there and their stuff is interesting. This is an understatement. As for your question, gamejams do have a separate thread. They also talk about conventions like Shoshinkai, I mean Narrascope, a yearly event that discusses interactive fiction. And yes, CoG has been one of the sponsors in recent years. Their talks are solid. I think my favourite one is “The Multicountry Origins of the Ace Attorney Series” since it’s a Capcom thing- and just like Mega Man, it’s been neglected.

I’m more familar with VS code, too.

An Itch.io page is where you host some games, original or fan-made. Indeed, I have seen some Sonic and Mega Man games there. I found out that that site does not just host interactive fiction through the Sonic Amateur Games Expo.

Thank you once again for all the support you’ve given me!

Edit: added link. As what Mara said, it’s a good place to network- unfortunately I’m not very good at doing so- still learning.

If you are interested in contests and jams itchio is the way to go!

My jam is not there because I want new people dont feel scared and overwhelm with the jam if it is more formal and public.

But official jams and contests are a wonderful way to gain more portafolio and meet people in the community.

Oh! I know about Itch.io! I actually have an account there and have joined two gamejams there. I just wasn’t sure if there was a thread here on the Choice Of forums.

Thanks a ton for sharing this! I didn’t know this existed! In case anyone else needs a link!

Hello hard workers! You made it to The Weekend---- sprinkles pixie dust and sparkly things.

I decided to post the beginning to Ch. 3 of my WIP---- hopefully it reads well.

I agree with this and go through this daily. “The good stuff stays” as King would say. I actually found that holding onto the old stuff because it was there already harmed my story telling progression---- But I keep the old stuff in a vault just to be safe---- You never know.

Have a wonderful weekend !

Work is progressing well on my Halloween Jam although I’m falling into the pitfall of thinking some of it is just bloat. The way it works involves the player seeing the same choices a few time which means repetition which I’m trying to prevent by making sure the text and the situation evolves.

For an example not in my game. A guardsman just out of training school taking on a bandit wouldn’t have the same experience as an experienced guardsman a year out of training school. So choices will be similar but will change depending on what point of the story you are at. So where as the first MC would see choices like block or wildly swing, the latter mc would see parry, swing or thrust etc.

My short story for the writing competition at my work is going slower but I really like the idea and have a change of heart which swaps the protagonist from the original one to someone introduced as his apprentice

I really recommend you use the number of times player pass for a choice to introduce changes on the phrases or even a deja vu fourth wall breaking players love those

Yeah that’s the plan. : -)

Well, September is off to an interesting start so far.

I have gotten a few paragraphs written (a paltry amount of words but it’s words at least) but I haven’t really been able to sit at my desk to write for nearly half a week as I somehow managed to do something to my ankle (it’s not broken or sprained but walking is like having someone drive a shopping cart over my ankle but ramped up to eleven and constant). I exacerbated it by continuing to attend class but I’ve got ice packs at least so that’s been helping.

It has given me time to plan some other stuff out in my notebook so I have that going for me as well. Though I’m almost tempted to try giving typing on my phone a go at this point.

Hope everyone’s September is off to a better start than mine.

You go, girl. Rooting for you!

This is why I don’t do things. :stuck_out_tongue: Feel better soon!

I thought I’d share some wisdom from Baldur’s Gate 3 director Swen Vincke:

“Creating moments that are really about you (the reader)” is a mission statement that I can get behind 100%.

I hope the second full week of September is a productive one for everyone.

you are all too kind with me. During a decade except writers like Havie, jimD, Lucid, Eiw, Hannah Matt and several others. All my relationship with the forum were negative and toxic.

Campaigns to ban me, Go to staff calling me a nasty person faking mails and stuff.

Oh, my favorite “You are a terrorist to english. How do you dare trying write in English my nose bleed reading you. You don’t have the mental capacity to be a judge or being in any literally event.”

Like Elton John I still standing like the stubborn silly weak woman I am.

I am here, I am on fire and I am in the way to recovery to point a Troll though I was an American native. Me, a self tough Spanish silly woman.

I promise all of you I won’t take all of you and even the staff kindness granted. I will be successful, someday. I will keep trying each day to be better.

And somehow paid a little the new relationship between the forum and me It is happening here and in my jam.

I will try to do a better jam, even if I am probably the worst hostess ever. I only have hard word and stubbornness. Hope that is enough for it.

Sorry for my stupid dramatic wall of text. As real as all I have posted on this forum for ill or for good.
