I asked similar questions some time ago, and apparently classes won’t mean much in this game, other than bigger bonuses at the end of days. Speaking of classes, I believe that the all-rounder class may be buggy. We only seem to receive bonuses at the end of one or two days, though I will need to do another playthrough in order to pinpoint those exact days. For the rest of the days, no class bonus is given.

I’ve reached out.

Give and take. The universalist class receives bonuses in all three stats, but only one third of the time, picked at random.

The all rounder class has a one in three chance of giving you a bonus at the end of the day (I admit - this was not communicated very well). I have a few plans to revise this class, one of which is it giving you the full bonus every day, but requiring more experience to level up. Anyways, game balance will be worked on after the story is complete.

Could I get a link to the demo please.

I will try my best to find any bugs or writing errors that my play throughs come across.

So far I have played through the character creation part and I see potential in the story; but I have some critiques. Hopefully these sound more helpful than just sounding mean.

  1. This could be just me, but I feel the story from what I read so far is more descriptive than story. You started off strong with the opening scene. But when describing the history of the MC it feels less flowing. From there the Character creation stops the flow altogether.

My suggestion for this is is try rearranging the history into something more like this.

Spoilery

As the cauldron boils, your mind starts to wander…
To your past.
You had never known your parents. Instead you were raised by Lord Gendrik Howthorne, a powerful nobel of the highest regard. For the longest time you thought yourself his own. But when you started to show signs of sorcery, he decided it was time for you to know where you came from. Ect…

  1. I would suggest not linking stats to how the character looks.

It is an interesting point. I didn’t want to hand the player too many details in the beginning, as I do have a flashback scene planned down the road, so I chose the short and descriptive option during the starting scene. Probably might not put those details at the start, but more details will come later.

I expected this at some point. I’m strongly considering an option to disconnect appearances and stats, but that will come in the stat overhaul which is planned once the game is content complete. I have actually received quite a bit of mixed feedback regarding MC appearances, so I’m consolidating everything before deciding on changes.

Thanks for the feedback!

Link is here.

Dragon of Steelthorne is no longer under beta testing. It should be released on HG next week, or you can play the limited version on the Spring Thing.

Short version:
I plan to focus on Hosted Games and no longer have plans to put this in IF comp. I think the game has sufficient interest from the HG crowd, so there’s no need to dump it in IF comp. The link will now be made public. I’m currently writing Dragon of Steelthorne 2 (which will be closed beta testing) right now, so the next time I work on Scarlet Sorceress will likely be in late May. I am still looking to publish this if interest can be sustained, so if you’ve any comments or feedback, keep it coming!

Long version:
When I originally started on this project, I was concerned that it would struggle for attention. Entering it in IFcomp was a way for me to put the game ‘somewhere’ at least. Nevertheless, there seems to be a good amount of interest here, so that no longer seems necessary. We can have a public demo and set a HG release as the goal now.

Also, I did have my suspicions from the beginning that a game like this probably wouldn’t quite appeal to the intfiction crowd. @RockmanX later mentioned this in another thread, and I agree. (Rockman ain’t always right, but I think, at least, that he’s right about this one.) The comp was a place to dump the game if it was struggling for attention, but I think I can shelve that plan now and focus on a HG publication.

I was planning to have more time to work on this, as I expected Dragon of Steelthorne to be released in mid or late July. However, even with copyedit and the steam release, HG moved way faster than I expected, and the release will be next week. I want to release a WIP thread for Dragon of Steelthorne 2 shortly after the release of my first game, so that’s the priority for now. I’m targeting to start work on Scarlet Sorceress again (no guarantees) in late May.

Nevertheless, I’m always watching these threads. If you’ve any questions, requests or comments, there’s no need to wait till late May. Feel free to say something anytime!

I just started reading this and I’m really liking it. I’m getting some fighting fantasy vibes from it so far with the story x fight challenges. The combat is well designed. Simple to understand (especially with the tutorial) and but (on the surface at least! Haven’t looked at the code or what is planned down the track) not overly drawn out convoluted to run with a million and one different options to account for which can be a danger in trying to write battle sequences using CS. Interesting to see how it goes further into the story and I’m assuming battles get tricker to win? I also like the pacing which jumps into the interesting parts of the story quickly.

I actually would have thought this game would have done fine with the Infiction audience as well, there’s a fair amount of variety. There are definitely games that go ok at infiction that have no chance at being popular as HGs, but the opposite doesn’t seem to be as true, especially as this doesn’t seem to be a typically formatted CSG. As long as you can get over the genderlock hurdle for having people try it out though, I think it’ll make a nice HG as well

Thank you! Yep, trying to put in a bit of combat and strategy alongside the easygoing romances. I’m aiming for the lighthearted VN vibe.

It’s still going to be a cakewalk for the most part. I’m planning to work on game balance once a full draft is done, which won’t be for a while. But as with Dragon of Steelthorne, I’ll bundle an ultra-easy difficulty setting into the game.

Maybe. That crowd just doesn’t like romance the same way this crowd does. I might not be able to get this done on time for IFcomp, since the other project takes priority now, so I’m probably just sticking to the HG release. Hopefull, it’ll work out. :slightly_smiling_face:

I know you’re really busy, so thanks for trying it out!

Oh yeah there is that I forget sometimes. It’s probably why I like it so much over there given I’m not always sold on romance themed IF games and you see a lot more games focusing on other things outside of HG lol. Ok true enough, lets see how it goes over here then. I hope it works out too

I haven’t finished it yet but it’s on my todo list asap. I really am liking it so far so it’s no trouble to read as its fun.

Have just run through the game, and its interesting, even though I’m not quite sure where you are going yet. I like that there is no fast crash into a sexual relationship with anyone, there is going to be time to get to know someone even if you revise this to make the romance a bit faster. I know its not always popular but some of us really appreciate a good story and the world-building so far gives a nice and gentle atmosphere, with the hint or threat of danger hovering just out of sight. A nice slow build up to a climax.
I had fun changing my appearance. This could be a handy way of building up skills for any final combat, if that is what is being planned, as well as trying to become the person I want to play.
I’m interested to see where this will go, and I’m glad its nearly May, if you are sticking to your timetable, .

Thanks for taking a look!

Yep. Starting it off easy and lighthearted.

Thanks. Actually, I’ve received very mixed feedback on appearances and stats, so I’m planning to include an option to separate the two, in addition to the current system. But I’m glad you liked it.

I’m planning to start work again in late May, but the actual update might come in June or so. Sorry! Unfortunately, a faster than expected publishing time from HG did change my plans.

It’s fun so far, I like mechanics (simple yet etertaining) but I dunno if it’s designed like this or not, but when I choose to do something inbetween action (in my house) its separated in morning, evening and so on, but I only pick one choice.

for example, ‘make potions’ gives me potions, some memory and some chores in those, should I be able to pick all or is it just ‘job-memory-chores’ thing and working as expected?

Other than that, I like story, Didn’t really use change apperance but I like the way it works. But I don’t like that I need to waste a day to check sold jewelry when I don’t even know if what I got is enough to pay for it or if they even have what I want.
