Scapegoated (WIP) - '70s Hollywood, Music '&' Murder [128K words]

Ah! Sneaky bugger that one. Fixed! It should work now

Exactly this! I concur to all of it! I really want to make an interactive game that will allow players to self-insert, and when I was planning this story, I knew from early on that this wouldn’t be the one where I did that. This era in history is latent with so much political and social change that in order to have those conversations, there cannot be any grey area. Thank you so much for your understanding!

Just replied to say phenomenal novels that I have taken minor inspiration from! Thank you for mentioning them, thank you for your support AND thank you for trusting my vision with this IF. I hope you think the pay-off will be worth it in the end <3

I was hoping someone would ask this! (Personally Leon has been one my favourite characters to write thusfar.) I do see the MC as having a deep connection with Leon that she doesn’t have with the other bandmates–I don’t see it as a brotherly dynamic, but I don’t see it as inherently romantic either. In the Songbook, by the end of the prologue only one song will appear that is co-written, and that is a song written by the MC and Leon. This relationship will be unconditional throughout the story, no matter the decisions you make, because Leon isn’t a conditional nor emotional person. He leads with reason and logic more than anything else. The intimate details of your relationship with Leon will be your decision, but at default will remain platonic.

I love this, I really like Leon (so far). I hope there will be time when MC meets him and they talk about their lives while ‘in hiatus’ and somehow that leads to something creative/fun.

wow what a great game already!! i love everything about it (i never thought i’d be able to fulfill my childhood dream of being a mod girl but here we are!)

i think the mc being gender locked will allow for a really interesting dialogue about misogyny back then, and i have to say that the cliffhanger at the end shocked me to my core, although i can’t tell if its because of my choices to flirt with everyone (surely this will have no consequences👀) or if it happens to every mc

i think this if has a lot of potential, loving it so far! and i’m really liking all the ROs, but especially vince<3

My cheeks hurt from smiling, thank you so much! I’m glad you’re invested and love ROs. The prologue is truly only the introduction, so I’m glad the purpose of the gender-lock is shining through so early in. I want this if to cover a lot of ground where topics are concerned and misogyny is definitely a big one!

Haha, expect loads of Beatles references to come. I always try to directly explain my references where I can because I fear people won’t get them otherwise, so thank you for getting that one! Will try to update as soon as I can  (P.S. I have officially started writing Chapter 1!)

This is really good so far! I love period dramas, and music and acting… and the ROs are really great so far! My favorite is Vince so far, but all the boys seem great.

I never leave comments, but I felt the need after playing your demo. This is one, if not the best WIP story I’ve come across. I hope you see this through. You’re writing, the organization of the stats page, and the diversity and complexity of the characters makes this a great read. Keep going!

Okay I have to say, I wasn’t expecting to find myself instantly connecting with the characters and craving more interactions with them (especially Leon, Vince, and Fleur). You’ve got an amazing start and I am overly excited to read more.

Just read this last night and really enjoyed it!

Though I find myself wondering with the description of '70s Hollywood and the prologue happening in late '60s? Will this take place over several years?

Seems like I am in the minority of not being into the singers and more interested in the filmmaker and the actor. I am also really curious about meeting the detective… Honestly in general curious about how you will tie-in the murder plot. I don’t remember reading other IFs with a murder but I am pretty new here.

Thank you! I’m relieved you find complexity in the characters–I’m trying to make them each as different and layered as possible. I want all decisions made to be as deliberate and intentional as possible (excluding the MC whose decisions are up to you guys mostly).

I won’t give away too much, but what I will say is:

  • Yes, there will be time skips throughout the story. With sluglines throughout like a script, you’ll know exactly when and where things are set at all times! The majority of the time skips won’t be too abrupt, jumping over no more than three months at a time.
  • You will meet the detective in Chapter 1.

That’s as much as I can say without directly spoiling anything to come! I’ve only read about three IFs myself (I’m also new here), so I can’t recommend any murder IFs if there are any unfortunately. Other than that, glad you enjoyed!

This is such a great premise and setting. Really looking forward to see where this goes. I prefer sex-locked PCs so that alone is enough to get me on-side.

I do have a question about the hippie/flower power bar. There were a lot of “hippies” who were politically unengaged but did a lot of drugs and didn’t shower much and there were a lot of left-wing peace and social justice activists who worked office jobs and wore ties. Is the flower power bar mostly tracking political actions, personality, aesthetics or all of the above? Can we be politically active but not wear beads, not say “groovy” and not be interested in encouraging other individual people to get along? Really into pot and meditation but bored with politics? That’s maybe a little more complicated than you’d want to get into for an already extremely ambitious game but I did wonder.

I like all the ROs so far but I did get about two screens into Penn’s interview and was like “Yup, this one.” By far my favorite and I’m probably going to be more into the movie career than the musician one if that means more interaction with him.

I don’t know it this is a mistake but if you choose for Kaya/Kai to be male he’s still described as having a soprano voice. Don’t know if it’s meant to switch to countertenor but didn’t.

Lastly, I caught a bug. If I choose “It wasn’t my finest moment.” when we’re about to get into the car after the interview this error message pops up: “*prologue line 3128: It is illegal to fall out of a *choice statement; you must *goto or finish before the end of the indented block.”
The screen then freezes and I can’t select any of the other choices. I have to refresh the page and go to the last save point. That’s the only one I’ve found so far myself though I see others have had similar ones.

Firstly, thank you for reaching out! This is the kind of response I was hoping to get a lot of because I need all the feedback I can get. I want to try to cover everything in your reply, so I will go through it consecutively.

In my planning stage of this IF, I did have a 50-50 stat bar in personality that was a Defiant/Compliant stat. I chose to remove it because I wanted the Flower Power bar to account for all aspects and renditions of a hippie mindset. Flower Power options aren’t inherently Hippie choices, they just give you Hippie-esque points. The locked and loaded Hippie will be set in action when you–the reader–make the concrete decision to be a Hippie.

Dress and optioned character-traits such as meditating, smoking, drinking-tendencies etc, will always be optioned choices throughout. Even if you decide to be a Hippie, these choices aren’t determined by your identity as a Hippie–if anything it is the other way around.

(I did battle with this for a while, so I did in part expect this question, but I was mostly not expecting my IF to do this well and hoped no one would notice to be entirely honest. But I have tried my hardest to make this as complex and nuanced as possible.)

The main middle-ground that I introduced much later to tackle this has been Smart/Ignorant options, which are not indicated like Flower Power points are. Smart choices are indicative of general knowledge but also political awareness–and/or ability to contribute in conversation with other characters. These will not have any implications in the Prologue–the Prologue is strictly introductory to the story and a build-up of who your MC may grow to be–but these choices will mildly come into force in Chapter 1.

Smart stats and Flower Power stats will work together in order to enable political action taken by your MC. Albeit rarely, there will be options to be a blissfully ignorant Hippie where I can incorporate as such–it’s just a matter of keeping that Smart stat above 50! Hopefully this clears up your question. If not, feel free to reach out again and I will try my hardest to clarify where I can!

You’ll love the first chapter! Lots of Penn and lots of the film industry world.

Not a mistake! But a great spot. I debated when I was writing to leave it as soprano for Kai, because I know there is some controversy in terms of men being referred to as sopranos due to the fact the sound isn’t the same as women’s. In the end, I decided to forfeit ‘countertenor’ and keep it as soprano voice since I wanted Kai’s voice to still be quite similar to Kaya’s; I essentially, decided it made enough sense as is and didn’t want to overcomplicate the coding.

Thank you for pointing that bug out; that has been the biggest spot yet! I have fixed it, so hopefully it should work now–cross fingers!

In general, your response has been so astute; somehow, it feels like you clocked a lot of my decision-making throughout the writing process in a way I did not expect to happen at all. Scary! But a blessing! Thank you so so much! Also, sorry for such a long-winded answer!
