Scales&Tales

See, I think to do that you’d need to raise Swampy as “You’re ugly, you stink and nobody loves you!” And then Swampy would have issues and want to become pretty. Whereas if you raise him telling him that he’s beautiful, and it’s what’s inside that matters he’ll believe you and his own warped sense of prettiness will come through in his other disguises.

Aw, as much as I like traditionally pretty things, I couldn’t be mean to my dragon. I’ll just have to learn to appreciate Swampy in all his grotesque/oddly adorable, stinky glory.

Just think Swampy as a somewhat-mutated Leopard Tortoise. :smiley:

I’m planning to do a gender-switch in the game on most of the NPCs. It’s my first attempt at trying this.

Would people like to be able to pick the gender of every single NPC? Would you like them random? Or would you rather make one choice at the start and that sets everyone? All the NPCs which I gender-flip should be romanceable.

@trollhunterthethird Oh you said Sparky. Yeah Sparky’s very cat-like, a cat that can breathe fire. I misread earlier.

I think one choice at the start works best. Picking the gender of each would get tiresome and break the immersion into the story too often, and randomizing it would be frustrating if you replay planning to romance a specific person only to find they’re not the gender you want.

Personally I’d like to be able to choose, cause I apparently like control like that…

Also, couldn’t help but notice the dragon/human romance debate… Instead of a dragon that turn into a human, how about a human that can turn into a dragon! Cause then he could, like, have conversations with the baby dragon and teach him how to be a real dragon (or, at least, what a human thinks a real dragon acts like…) It could happen, right? >.>

@Eriedanna The trouble with that is it makes bisexuality tough. Although I could sort that out by offering the men or women or both choice at the start and if you choose both, I can just randomise. Actually no reason at all I can’t do men, women, both, or choose. It’ll mean a little extra coding but maybe it’ll keep everyone happy.

I’ll put that on my list of things to do. However if I implement it now it’ll delay me getting the relationship stuff written up, so for today I’ll just let a choose.

@Babisko

There may be one of those. It’s a fun idea.

You’re right, I like your second solution best. Randomization for bisexuality works for those who don’t prefer one over the other and gives more variety in multiple playthroughs, but I like having the option to choose for each romance option since I look for different things in men than I do for women, so I can choose which gender I prefer to have whichever personality. And having it all at the start removes the problem of breaking immersion!

Edit: Er, by second solution, I meant the one that gives all options. I should have read that better to make sure it was, in fact, the second one you suggested.

@Eriedanna Thank you. I’ll implement it when I get the chance.

Looks like this romance section is being a bit trickier to write up than I suspected. I have the bare structure of two scenes but actually adding in choices to make it interactive is proving trickier.

I do want to get something up for today though.

Also, I wanted to mention, even though you said you were gonna focus on other things, there’s an error when you choose to ‘teach’ your dragon. I think it’s a fall out of choice? I can’t remember… I just figured, since the rest of the options allowed you to go back to those options, you might have missed it :stuck_out_tongue:

@Babisko OH! Thank you. I didn’t realise that. I’ll fix it in a bit.

I haven’t tested it but I’ve put up a scene with the minstrel. I now have a thumping headache though so the end of it’s rushed and not all that finished. I’ll work on the witch once my headache clears. The whole thing is in desperate need of polishing and neatening up.

So I just read through the whole 31 new posts of this thread, and I personally love the idea of completely randomized genders! It would make the whole thing really interesting to me, and I would enjoy that element of surprise and wondering who will be what gender each time I play! The idea of having no control over the randomness actually appeals to me greatly! Not that I think this idea would be popular with many other people, but I would be perfectly happy if there was no option at all to choose the genders of people or the sexualities of characters and have them all always completely random where, of course, the player character’s sexuality is decided by the characters he/she chooses to romance rather than by a button you click.

All of the NPCs are bi regardless of what gender they are, so their sexualities don’t change. I do tend to prefer just letting a player organically choose their sexuality as opposed to making them pick. At the same time, since I am using gender flips, I figure that I may as well take full advantage of it and allow people to play where everyone’s their preferred gender.

I may phrase it so rather than asking your sexuality though, I just ask you to pick. Of course that kills immersiveness but right at the start it shouldn’t matter too much.

I’ll definitely look into coding up a ‘random’ option at the start. It is going on the list.

Awesome! I suppose having an option to have all the characters random is the best I could really hope for! That sounds great!

Ugh debugging the minstrel stuff is proving annoying. It’s all sorts of broken and needs a lot more work, especially to make it clear who’s talking. There’s also chunks I want to provide you the chance to speak. Not to mention what happens if you have various dragons.

You’re doing great! Just keep at it! It’s only Tuesday!

@Galador Thank you!

The aim for today is to finish up the witch stuff and the dragon scene and do a bit of tidying everything up. Maybe write some more stuff on my notebook, maybe not.

I was wondering if you choose revenge can you turn kinda evil and conquer/destroy the princes kingdom

@Kronos That’s a very, very good idea. I’ll mark it down as a possibility. It makes sense that you could become the Dragon Lord/Lady and usurp the Prince’s place.

Elixirs of dragon blood have healing properties. Actually bathing in dragon blood offers immortality and invulnerability (along with a number of drawbacks). That’s one of the reasons dragons are hunted, although the larger dragons are almost impossible to kill. But you have a baby dragon at a time when the dragon is most susceptible to outside influences. Killing your dragon, draining all of the blood from it and bathing in it is most certainly an extremely evil thing to do but it should allow you to enact your revenge and take over the Kingdom.

I’m not sure how much of that path will get done this week but I’m definitely going to put in a BE EVIL option.
