As in, HG releases a high quality, high data version and a low quality, low data version? I’m not sure if they would, I suppose they could release the high quality version on steam since people will be playing on larger screens and have more memory to burn.
You are certainly right, just an idle thought.
I don’t really want to complicate matters now. The true essence of the game is the text and if people enjoy the journey then I can be content.
EDIT: Just to get a bit of feedback.
Would a game size of 80MB put you off from purchasing a HG game?
- Yes.
- Not if it is put to good use (as I think it is here).
- No.
Trying to set up an alliance with the forest elves flat out won’t work if you’re allied to the dark elves, unless you meet their demand and hand her over, but a third choice, if you have enough goodwill with the humans, that would have them pressure the elves into at least meeting, would be nice.
Hi Sujan,
That is a good suggestion which presents new opportunities. I will add it to my update list.
All of those games are less than 12MB on Play Store. Choice of the Deathless is only ~4MB.
Yes, the differences between Steam and mobile stores are huge.
I have been told that Night Road is 94 MB and Raiders of Icepeak Mountains is 52 MB.
Images do add a massive amount to the final size- as does sound. I have optimised greatly.
If I only had text (or just a few images) then the size would be massively reduced. This will, inevitably, be a larger project due to the number of images, something I will note for any future game I might make.
Had to stop a moment to say
Im not sure why I didn’t get into this sooner. The baby orc simulator is hilarious and too much fun!
I got games that are 5Gigs to 34Gigs in space, 100mb ain’t gonna kill anyone
Eh I’m pretty certain if the genre is captivating and storyline is good(which it is) size doesn’t matter (no dirty thoughts pls ) ppl will still download it.
Haha! Thanks for popping another orc into the world. And that little baby may, one day, reduce the world to ruin!!!
It is more of an issue with space and data use on phones. I am not really too up-to-date with these things. I just use my phone for the basics and enjoy games on my computer.
My only experience with having problems with phone data and space is filling mine up with audible books- so I guess space might be a problem for some.
There are several points in the game where you get the chance to hold conversations with characters via a dialogue tree, where you work your way through the various questions before moving forward the plot, what most games do is that once each question is answered, it’s respective choice is grayed out, something that is not done here
No, 80MB would not put me off buying a HG game. It would have put me off buying it 10 years ago when I started playing CoG on my crappy smartphone that’s always low on memory, but not now that I am an adult with better phone . That said, I personally don’t consider pretty image and sound important assets for a cs game. I always play on mute so sound never matter. I don’t mind pictures, but I tend to just focus on the texts.
Hi Sujan,
With many options that don’t move you to another scene, and don’t give you penalties or bonuses, I have allowed the player to view them as many times as they want. Since I don’t have a dialogue log, I thought this might be helpful.
I agree, the images are not the important thing here- although the map function does add a fun little mechanic. But I have made the images and feel the personal need to put them in the game!!! My precious, precious baborcs!
Of course, the player is free to ignore them entirely.
I only have one sound file, a bit of rolling drums for the title screen, made by Emily Roll 4 Fantasy, a youtuber with loads of great, free fantasy-inspired tunes, I feel it adds a nice touch of atmosphere/
But, yes, the important thing is the text, above all else.
EDIT: @LiliArch
That is a great idea! Although, since this is my first project, I doubt CoG would want to muddle around with such things. When the time comes, I may well make this suggestion.
I wonder if making the larger images a dlc would solve this? Depends on if the download is the same and the content is just gated on software level I guess; I don’t know how CS games’ dlcs work in technical level.
DLC for CS games is always present in the files. Purchasing it doesn’t download anything additional.
Well that’s solved that.
I will adhere to the best practise of experienced authors. 80MB (maybe 81 or 82 as I added a few pictures to replace ones that didn’t look right- a better orc baby, cyclops and I’m working on a new Morgorc image) seems acceptable, regarding the feedback. I also opened a post on HG Reddit asking the same thing about HG/CoG game sizes. Nobody said that they would be put off by an 80MB game. Some thought it was a strange question to even ask.
In, truth, I don’t see the reduced size (game size in MB, amount of text is still the same) being an issue now. If someone enjoyed the game, they probably wouldn’t mind. If they disliked the game, the size would be something to add to other reasons and not be the main reason.
I say too soon…
It’s probably too late for me to give feedback, but I just want to say that I played this and really enjoyed it. It reminded me of Life of a Mercenary.
Managed to conquer the world and defeat the bad guys. Anyways, best of luck! I’ll be waiting for this to come out on HG.
Thanks ChanceOfFire,
Knowing that you are also a crafter of awesome fantasy worlds, and that you like mine, makes my day.
Wishing you every success with Dragon of Steelthorne
This sound right down my alley!
I haven’t used the new checkpoints yet, but pretty sure will work on dashingdons if you want to if you compile your game first… But that also means reuploading all your images to the site too. Alternative is compile, zip with images, chuck it on itch.io (you can restrict access or unlist it there if you want.)
If I compile (using CSIDE) the game won’t run, as it doesn’t recognise the checkpoint system, yet.
I have tested the checkpoint system using the run-server command and it works fine.
Itch.io is definitely an option. I am on the verge of submitting the game though. Do authors usually remove the demos, once the game is submitted?
Sorry I meant the compile in with the CS package you download. (I’m assuming that works but haven’t tried it with the checkpoints yet.) It’ll likely take many months to be published. Some authors take the games down as soon as they submit, others leave them up for a while in case there’s any more incoming feedback so totally up to you how you want to manage it
