(OPEN BETA +1) A SHRIEK OF ASH AND FIRE 1(WIP) 2.6 Million Words- 22nd August 2026

Who is plotting against the king, I can’t figure it out I want to say it’s blackwood but no matter how many days I wait he is never there

If you play it out, you should find out who is really doing it. At this point, the King is paranoid and sick, stirred by every whisper of a rumour. Much of what you see and hear are red herrings. Also, you must have a reason to make an accusation- and even if you are right, this does not mean the King will be happy… (hint).

Unless I misremember, just continue playing through, even if it looks like you‘ve made the wrong choice and are punished for it. Perhaps you were correct all along… (but it’s not Blackwood, he is a red herring).

Not Blackwood, but someone the King trusts, maybe one of the Scorned Elves the player is with as Dispatch, maybe it is Revira who killed and usurped him.

More like cannon fodder

Yeah I finished the demo and saw who did it

@NumberedEntity I think you need to come up with new Weapon Descriptions for other paths outside the Royalist, Rebel, and Basilisk Paths, I am playing the Cold Pact Path and it displays the same weapon descripions as if the MC is either an Ash Marine, Dispatch, Engine Mate, Grease Swab, or Etherneer. That looks wrong

Does it mention “Ash Marine” and stuff like that, names which shouldn’t be there? Or do you mean the weapons’ names and the standard descriptions? The weapons are the same (I think it would confuse people to call basically the same weapons brand new names with another faction; we can imagine they look slightly different and have different symbols engraved) – but, I agree, it could be good to vary the descriptions.

EDIT: ashsnap- pistol, farsnipe- rifle, blustercrank- minigun, boom tube- grenade launcher. Basically, the world would use these names as generally accepted terms for each type of arm.

The descriptions of the weapons look wrong in the Cold Pact Path, the weapons description I mean. The other picture is for reference of the Cold Pact Path

Okay. Yes, one description goes into more detail. I will add to the Cold Pact a few more details in the weapon descriptions.

Update 18, Hot War (approx 90K, 1.68 million words total – 18th December 2025)

HINT: The quickest way to join the zombie and ghoul path is to choose the Testing Start for the slave. When Krayvas bullies you in the slave pit, resist. The bully will overcome you… Yep, he will kill our poor MC.

Yonder Sentinels and Scholars, Dwarven Legionaries, Ghouls and Slaves all have their stories extended here.

  • Begin the battle of New Yeirshee, an outmatched foe.

  • Break through the lines and go mage hunting or enter the ruins of New Yeirshee.

  • Form a squad after the battle and stamp the Cold Pact’s authority on the scattered communities of southeastern Zthullu using mercy or brutality. Forge your reputation.

  • Encounter the Zthullu Zoomers and Ashland Angels gangs.

  • Gain respect to aid your rise in the Cold Pact.

  • Of course, ghouls can handle things with their own increased savagery.

  • As a slave, further your schemes with Scram to, one day, take a stand.

  • Perhaps we blackmail Krayvas, found at the scene of a murder.

  • We might charm a rather weird group of Yonders, a book group with Frans among them, who have made a little reading corner in an old storeroom.

  • We could venture into a tomb containing wayward Enshrined, powerful undead set aside by the liches, deemed failures and called Deshrined.

  • Or, we may uncover a secret group of sneakers hiding in the lower vents, ex-slaves eking out a living through theft.

  • Finally, put all the pieces of our plan together and decide on a more peaceful or militant approach.

  • You, or Scram, will get pickled.

This all builds up to the next update, when we arrive at the hulk of the Pale Lady. Events there will leave us not as a new recruit but as someone of great interest to the Cold Pact.

Help me squish any typos and bugs! Only together can we prevail!

Whenever I try to check stats in the COGDemos version I get an error message and the webpage stops letting me click anything. Error message says:
cogdemos.ink says
coicescript_stats line 429: Non-existent variable ‘enshrinedghoul’

I may not have uploaded the updated startup file (???). I have done it now and tested it. Seems to work. If you have any more problems, let me know.

On upload day, I usually upload both the Patreon and HG Forum builds. This is actually a bit fiddly… But I hope I’ve fixed it now. Appreciate you pointing this out to me quickly!

And more story of this game continues to expand. I tested the new version

We have 2 main branches: STAY ON TRAIN and then ESCAPE TRAIN.

The STAY ON TRAIN path splits into REBEL, ROYAL or BASILISK CULTIST.

The ESCAPE TRAIN path splits into ROAD FLEET and COLD PACT (which splits into ‘braided’ paths, Legion, Yonder, Ghoul, Slave).

Of course, each of the BIG paths splits into other, smaller routes.

All the BIG paths, except for the COLD PACT, have reached the same point and carry a similar narrative weight. Each path journeys westward but experiences events from a different angle. When the COLD PACT path has reached the same point as the others (not too long to go here), we can finally begin the concluding events.

In hindsight, I should have just stuck to the STAY ON TRAIN paths and the ROAD FLEET path – but I thought it would be more fun for the player to be able to become part of the nominally evil side. I am committed now, and I enjoy exploration within a game; I enjoy rewarding curiosity.

When Green was in development, one player once said I should just finish the Green Emperor route and make it the whole story. It would have been easier, and it would have cut out loads of the freedom and replay value. Would have perhaps been the sensible thing to do… Like with Green, I am too far gone to be sensible with Ash and Fire Book 1, lol. The game will already hit the ‘long book’ price tag (same as Green). Adding more words will not affect this anymore (not that I was aiming for that; the length just happened).

Now, I am simply trying to make all the paths valid for a player to enjoy, without shortchanging particular choices. It is quite mad of me, considering I am consistently told that players hardly ever replay these games, and I am simply creating more and more work for myself… Maybe next time I will be more sensible!!!

Maybe…

Yeah… Maybe… In the end, it is your choice.

You hit the nail on the head.

To choice or not to choice…

I mean hey ya gotta have the evil path right :smiling_face_with_horns:

Oh and I may be wrong here I think that the reason why people don’t replay these types of games a lot is because the usual “replay value”of them are “congrats you’ve spend an hour on a slightly different ending woo”and not like yours when their is genuine replay value at-least in my experience idk could be wrong just a thought so idk could you like put a “just a tip this game has may different paths with a lot of new content each path”type thing idk

Hi, @Lucifur-dark

Good call. I do have a Player Notes screen in the states menus. Before I release the game, I’ll definitely push that the game is designed for multiple replays and that many of the paths are very different experiences. Not all, of course; there is crossover here.

It’s up to the player to do as they wish! But it cannot be a negative to give folks the heads-up.

Presenting the traditional Krogmas Orc. We also have a non-traditional Christmas elfling. Sera, when not rolling around with writhing shadow tentacles and when not squeaking at Vin and calling him ‘stupid’, is a big fan of timely celebrations.

I wish Peace and Joy to all the residents of Earth and Krog Pile, to every human, elf, dwarf, halfling, orc, goblin and even to the unspeakable horrors of Abyssal realms.

Merry Christmas!!!
