Officer of the Fleet (WIP)(~170k words)(Major Update 11/8/25)

@T_Chaney is the game in some way also inspired by Grand Admiral Thrawn from Star wars? His Trilogy books have quite the clever and brilliant tactics in them, alongside him treating war as an art and taking the lesson, “Know thy enemy” to heart as he analyses the culture of other species and gains an understanding of their mindset and tactics merely from analyzing their art.

You should definitely give his trilogy books a read if you have not done so, and maybe even check out the Ascendency books too.

One weapon I like from the Chiss Ascendency are their plasma spheres that can disable ship sensors through ionic shocks which leaves the ship blind on the effected portion. (I also remember reading how Ukranians did the same by disabling a Russian tanks sensors which made it completely blind) Followed up by breach missiles that release acid to eat through the ships hull which is then followed up by laser fire to cause maximum damage.

Now Im only reading through Ascendency Greater Good book so I might not know much about his tactics and strategy to the full but I encourage others to give it a read.
Hope to see some genius tactics to be implemented in the game in the late future, tho your work is a blast in any case :ok_hand:

I’ve been thinking, what if the Enemy achieved its objective? What we expect and are told is that the Raptors’ objective was to conquer Earth, but let’s consider another scenario. If we look at it from the Enemy’s perspective, or if what we saw was a biological weapon, from the perspective of the Raptors’ creators, you clearly would have the knowledge and technology to conquer Earth, but you don’t use the resources at your disposal to win. Perhaps it was arrogance, believing that the lizards would be enough, but let’s consider that you don’t want to conquer Earth, instead you create a plan to achieve another objective, so what happened AFTER the war? Humanity unified against a common enemy, evolved to the point of being able to mass-produce a space fleet, and socially created a xenophobic and militaristic society to the point where child soldiers are accepted to a certain extent. Was this final state the ultimate goal of the war? To unify humanity? Could there be a greater threat that has driven aliens to seek ways to unify other intelligent species and prepare them for the worst? Maybe I’m just sleepy.

I think there are two possibilities. Either the Raptor attack misfired and they expected an easier conquest than they got and failed, or the Raptor attack is part of a larger and more complex operation and it was just an opening phase. That said it is hard for me to conceptualize an successful opening where your initial contact force is obliterated and you give your intended target years to prepare their defenses without any pressure to speak of and potentially an opportunity counterattack you.

There are many possibilities. I can think of a few ways that they can be lizard brain and still have advanced technology. 1. They found ruins of an advanced civilization on their planet, catapulting their technology. This requires some intelligence but not nearly as much. 2. There was an advanced civilization that tried to contact them, they killed them and stole the delegation’s ships and weapons. This would be quite ironic, as that means that the attack they did was literally all they had while humanity is preparing for a second Invasion. 3. The least satisfying; pure accident….many technology we have is by pure accident.

I’ve heard of Thrawn, but never read the books. Maybe I will!

I like him (as a character), he study the culture of his enemies (like art, moral, etc) to understand how and why they fight, understanding them so he can exploit their weaknes and weaken their will to fight. I can’t recall any other character who does that.

Amazing update, no notes! Keep cooking what you’re cooking, it’s been great so far!

It’s possible that they were once a colony of a highly advanced civilization, but their civilization declined or their homeworld was destroyed, similar to some of the pocket civilizations in Warhammer 40k. Meanwhile,Their technology and industrial production rely entirely on AI and Standard Template Construct.

Is there a plan to have a high leadership fight vs Wagner resemble a Krik/kobayashi maru moment? I asked something similar before but had the realization that high leadership seems like a Captain Kirk style build to me. Haven’t tested leadership in a bit but last I tried it failed to beat Wagner.

Leadership isn’t really going to help you out much against Wagner (aside from giving you a little insight into who she is). If you want to beat her, focus more on Intelligence and Adaptability. However, don’t sleep on Leadership either as it becomes more useful in Chapter 3 and beyond.

Everything is a give and take, and you’ve got to pick your battles.

A couple of typos.

“Academy grade” → Academy Graduate

“Dominate record” → Dominant Record

I am curious, how big do you plan to make this game? Also, do you plan it to be like for example the Infinity Saga where you will have multiple games??

My current outline is eight chapters, though that might get a little larger as things change and expand. Additionally, the ending I have in mind leaves the door open for a sequel or perhaps even a series, but I don’t want to promise anything as things are still early.

The goal ultimately is to make the game fun as a stand alone project, but to also allow me the opportunity to expand upon it if I want to and people want more.

That is awesome, this game, minus some of the aspects such as aleins or robots gives me a good feeling of the CoG Life of a spaceforce Captain, another space faring game I loved. I look forward to the games progression. By the way, do you have a discord channel??

I’m glad you’re enjoying it! I’ve read Mike Walter’s Life of a Space Force Captain more than a few times myself and enjoyed it as well. His Lost Heir trilogy was also some of the first interactive fiction I read, and really got me into the genre, so I (like a lot of people I assume) have a lot of respect for his work.

As for having a discord, no, at least not yet, though I might consider making one. A few people have asked, and if there’s interest I’d be happy to provide a space. I’m just not particularly tech-savvy though, so if/when I make one expect it to be a little messy at first.

What if we treat the others civilly, but treat the french fry really really horrendously

@T_Chaney Is there an Admiral within the fleets that is literally as legendary equivalent of Steven Hackett in the Mass Effect series?
