You mean our ‘wear pants one day, then a dress the next day’ best friend (not that I ever played your game before. Innocent whistling :kissing::kissing::kissing::kissing::kissing::kissing:)

I am tickled pink you remember my game this far out from its beta testing. Thank you very much

I have a good sharp memory :slightly_smiling_face:, the one thing useful in my life. Plus, I honestly would have liked to see your game.

Concerning non-binary characters, I’ll be honest. As I am from, I would reckon, a very traditional country, I was literally naive and was unaware that there are people in the world whom identify themselves as such ( I was also young, but I digress). This was so much the case that I honestly made a mistake when I gave feedback for the the third game of Heroes Rise, concerning a particular character that had the pronouns ‘zhe’. Of course, I have now smarten up and more accepting of such characters in game. Also, I do hope I have not offended anyone here with the earlier statement.

The original Mr and Mrs Smith aren’t exactly married

Of course there was also Sarah Connor and her son

Does Gravity Falls count?

If you think about it… Every main character with a love interest are soul linked and married. They just don’t know it yet.

Yeah and if we follow that, probably every final fantasy game’s protagonist and the lead female. And come to think of it, wasn’t Noctis married to Lunafreya in FFXV early game?

@RenaB has the mc start divorced in Model Citizens. It can help add more background, but it is more tricky to pull off right, imho. In model citizens, we can fortunately have been in a gay/lesbian marriage, so my character is not a female-preferring bisexual by default.

@Jacic Mr. and misses Smith don’t so much save the world as they do themselves and their marriage. Marriage being what got them into the whole mess in the first place.

I do think there is more room for CoG’s where the mc is married or has a partner, but I see it more in series/sequels as it would allow us to build relationships with npc’s that don’t have to end at the end of the dating stage, which can be frustrating. For those who like that it can also be used to explore other stages in the life of the mc as they age, which could also go some way address the gripes of those complaining about mc’s tending to be on the younger side.

For a marriage stage of adventure, Great Tournament 2 did a wonderful job on how the MC is helping his wife , the Queen to govern the kingdom and even leading an expedition on behalf of his wife… which is actually intriguing

I would love to see similar development in the Infinity Series where , either marriage to Lady Katarina or Countess Welles and help them venture into various assignment and political reformation

I know, but not all incredulous adventures have to be about saving the world, sometimes they can just be adventures!

Hmmmm. Come to think of it, the whole idea of us choosing our names and genders and backgrounds and whatnot, all of that stuff is pretty odd. In most of these games, we are effectively taking over someone else’s life for a while and experiencing their life through their eyes, and yet we can determine a lot about these characters that we cannot determine in our own lives.

It is not like we are truly placing ourselves in these story worlds, as if we are stepping through a portal into their world, since the protagonist often has knowledge of their world and history that we do not. So, why not just develop the protagonist like a character in a book, complete with their own history and personality and ideas? We, the players, would instead at times nudge our protagonist in particular directions, as though we play the hand of God or something, guiding them through their life.

An interesting thought, perhaps. The concept of a new IF, maybe.

Very common scenario in old IF’s:

Take the flask
You take your flask
Use the flask
You can’t use your flask!

I wonder why this command even existed in old Interactive Fiction? Also the second most common thing in old IF’s is the constant second person narrative (“You have reached the top of the mountain”) and the ever present neutral name (i.e. Robin can be interpreted as a boy or a girl’s name). Also the constant need to advertise how many endings a IF has (eg. This book has over 20 endings!).

Well I can guarantee that my game has over 1 ending.

Because they were parser games?

Something else I have thought up.

Why do we always play the Hero in stories? I am not referring to abstract concept of a mortally good character, no, but rather we always play the Chosen One; the one who slay the great evil or bring peace or whatever else the Hero of the story is meant to do. We always seem to take control of the character whose destiny is to do something of great importance, to carry the weight of their own world, or sometimes the whole world, on their shoulders. Isn’t this a bit strange? How many times are we ever the Hero in real life? Some might even assert that there is no ‘Hero’ in our world. So why are these characters so prolific in all stories; in games especially.

Would it not make better sense to play as someone who is connected to the Hero, as a companion or something, rather than being the Hero? To see the story from the perspective of those who are not the centre of the story world, to see what carrying the weight of so much responsibility would or could do to someone, especially if they are not personally prepared for it their whole lives, like so many Heroes in stories.

Maybe this is something I will work on myself, in time. I think a story in which you are decidedly not the Hero and not expected fulfill any kind of destiny would be an interesting change of pace.
