This is so good! I played it at least a dozen times yesterday. The game has so much breadth and different ways to play.
Be onest guys, based from what you have seen, does this game have a story worth buying?
First of all, thanks so much to all of you who have reported bugs and made suggestions for improvement!
This one is a complex game, and I realised some things might not be working as intended. I’ve got quite a few bugs and stuff to work through, and I’m going to start working now on the first update.
Also, before I start, I want to emphasize that I welcome all criticism! (even negative criticism). Open talk and discussion is important, and I recognise that those posting here are being constructive! Constructive criticism is super-important for me to grow as an author, so do not take anything below as me being annoyed or defensive (internet is not the best medium, and sometimes things can come across in an unintended way). So, let me stress again that I am very happy with EVERY SINGLE COMMENT made above!
I think this point has been raised and discussed by many people. But, as emphasized in the comments: This game is about you creating YOUR superhero and seeing how YOUR personality and powers affect things. There isn’t a storyline driving your character, as I wanted to let players imagine their own. So, my emphasis was always to add freedom of choice (powers, personality, etc)… if you want, I am painting a canvas (the world), and letting you insert a hero (or villain) of your choice, rather than painting the entire painting for you. Now, I understand that this is not for everybody, and those who want a more focused and developed story will likely not enjoy this so much. I do take the point that many of the characters (and particularly the co-workers) are a bit bland… some beta testers enjoyed more some of the “more developed” characters and RO (Villardi, Steel Aeronaut, etc). I chose to let the MC be able to romance almost anybody, but it is clear many of the choices are under-developed…
But, to answer some specific comments:
-As I said, I’m starting to work on all those bugs, again, thanks to all those who reported!
-Checkpoints are difficult to implement, actually. The official policy of CoG is not really to have them, but to have to live with the consequences of actions…
@genichirooo, you did choose to be a villain, right? (anyway, I’ll look into this…)
@vinny_e the playthroughs for the game are >40,000 words, which makes it the size of a small novel… I’m glad it feels short (as it means you enjoyed it!) though in interactive fiction it’s so difficult to make something with meaningful choice any longer, as it involves writing so many branches…
@Pheriannath… I am not sure myself about this question. I would think it’d be almost impossible to get anywhere in impossible, but maybe I’m wrong?
@Talyrion clearly at that point the game isn’t behaving as intended… I’ll go through it again and try to add a few modifiers to how the characters behave…
@Jinx_the_Atomic_Cat sorry that you didn’t like it… but, what do you mean that the game doesn’t branch off? There are many branches in the game… also, I am unsure about what you mean regarding difficulty levels. This should greatly influence the outcome? Is it really possible to defeat everybody in normal difficulty? (let alone the higher difficulties?). Obviously, there are choices of powers that will make certain paths through the game super-easy, yet that makes other completely impossible (a low psyche will mean automatically losing many fights, not having high armour or endurance will mean losing others…). If you are always taking the same path, and encountering the same enemies, then obviously it becomes easy to beat them?
It’s possible to defeat Steel Aeronaut on Impossible. Testing the other routes as well (when I get around to it).
Who are the Romance options and is it possible to romance the steel aeronaut? If so how?
can you only choose to hang out with the people from your job?
@Brayden_Viloria, I’ve been trying to sort out that bug, hopefully it’ll be sorted in the next update I send today…
@Jaitzche that is odd… are you still having the same problem?
@Haunted, do you mean you can go on the same date twice in the game? That shouldn’t be possible, and as far as I can see from the code it’s not possible. But, let me know if you are having this, and I will try to check…
@genichirooo hopefully I sorted the bug with the Evil description… to team up with the SA you should generally try to be nice to her, not fight, etc, and eventually other options will appear
@Ramidel added the option, as requested!
Also corrected the bow bug.
@Ian_Mcnamara in that case I would recommend increasing AGI or STR, but others might have other thoughts? (despite making this game, I think several players might be much better at it than me…)
@Talyrion I added some new checks on how people at the office will react to you, which hopefully gives a better feeling about them. Regarding the police, I thought there were already a number of checks and that captain Villardi reacted… could you send me some screenshots of the worst offending paragraphs? (so that I can try to change…)
@Ramidel… you defeated the SA on impossible?? Wow… I am still surprised that people can manage… what combination of powers work for that?
@air1sam you can romance the SA basically, you have to try to avoid fighting with her, tell her she is intelligent etc, and help her when she needs… and then you have to follow her to Mongolia… it’s a VERY long and difficult road! I guess few people have romanced her, Captain Villardi or Lyron? (I am intrigued by the fact that many are saying the RO are boring… and I take it that many of the “easy” ones are not so well developed… but I thought some of the harder ones were a bit more interesting? (and I do take it even those are not so good, but…)
@ghost3337 depending on the paths you can hang out with some other people… (see previous reply)
Inventor, supervillain. For an inventor, money is power. For a supervillain, money is easy. Combine the two, and you can build yourself such things as heavy plasma, armor and flight.
Vampirism helps too. Ms. Dragos is so kind to give the “yon-kyu” some serious power, which includes enough Psyche to defeat her!
Speaking of which, I did discover that you can repeatedly threaten the beggar for more help, which allows an infinite supply of junk parts.
Thanks for listening!
@Ramidel Money is not turning out to be easy at all for my super smart supervillain. All my burglary attempts are failing! Isn’t there a way to get into a locked shop other than by busting the door open with uncivilised brute force? (Because I do not want to sacrifice my precious Intelligence for mere crude brawn)
Just a question. Who are the male romance RO’s are there any deep ones? Or like more fleshed out among them?
Unfortunately, there isn’t! Robbery is a most uncivilized business without an Agility-based ability to pick locks… Consider the possibility of building a light laser after character generation and using it to rob the shop and the warehouse. A ray is a most effective way to blow up a door.
Ok so I’ve tried the game and I have to say…isn’t the time rewinding power the most useless power ever?
I mean if it wasn’t for the amnesia and loss of stat percentage it could have been interesting, but I can basically just do the same for free by restarting the game
. Idk what is the opinion of y’all about that ability?
I really enjoyed the story, it was like going to see an action movie, you go for the fun not for the “depth” of it.
Romanced SA since the very beginning and got a funny and unexpected ending with aliens wanting to use us as gladiators, I’m not a person who likes replaying games just to get a different ending because I tend to pick the choices I’d personally pick, but there’s a lot of variety and that’s really refreshing (see below for a more detailed opinion on this). Also, I didn’t try any of the other RO’s but the SA has a very amazing mad scientist personality which I kind of dig.
I’ll give it a 3.5/5 just because I felt you tried to give it so much variety that some of the best narratives between the game got cut short. Maybe on the sequel try to focus only on two or three well developed paths for your hero/villain and go from there. But I want to make emphasis on the fact that I really enjoyed your story, your writing is amazing and you should totally write a second part for this.
Finished the game, I enjoyed it.
I just realised I’m going to need a powered armour suit to pull off an Impossible run like you.
Guess I’m stuck with discount Tony Stark instead of Bruce Wayne…
I like the character creation but I think having what attributes you can bring up dependant on the powerset severely limits your build. For example, light, dark, time and mind all have offensive options that are dependant on strength, but have no strength attribute ehancement option.
I get that having superhuman strength wouldn’t be consistent with certain powersets but why have strength be a determining factor for energy melee weapons anyway?
I love it so far BUT I’m having a hard time figuring out, what the evil choices are, cause it seems most choices are vigilante…
Eeh, I’ll try to play through it one more time then.
Yeah, that stat seems a bit wonky on the supervillain path. Not even sure what it does in gameplay, to be honest.
Wtf…I was king of the underworld when I went to sleep in a mansion. Woke up in a rundown room that is barely holding up. And an alien kidnapped me. Weirdest epilogue ever.
