Mind Blind (01/31 Demo Update. A Story Where You Are NOT The Chosen One!)

I guess? I feel like my MC has been super whiny but I guess not. Maybe I just happened to avoid all the super whiny options lol

Well, I haven’t played in a long time so maybe some stuff has changed, usually playing a resentful person who dislikes Ments and their mindblindness a lot and thinks their life is unfair gets me a pretty low stat with Rosy idk. I have no idea of the what options you’re actually taking tho lol

I would have to check to be sure, but I think you take those hits for being outwardly resentful, what you mentally complain about isn’t factored into it

It is pretty slow burn.

I myself have a pretty high tolerance for slow burn, like it to a certain extent, and am not one to complain about slow burn routes — Probably more the type to defend them, if anything. But I didn’t like their romance route in particular.

Playing through, as I hadn’t known the rewrite was up, holy shit I forgot how insufferable Nick is. I know the prevailing opinion here is loving him but he’s so obnoxious. Love that his breakdown is him talking about how hard it is to be him to his sibling who’s constantly fucking mind controlled and has had zero privacy at any point in their life. Like dude, read the fucking room and realize who you’re complaining to.

Pointless to mention, I know, but I’m really put off by all of the stuff about Korea. It sounds plausible as something that would happen in real life, of course, but in the “this is US propaganda used to justify finishing taking control of the peninsula” way and just kinda grosses me out given it feels like it’s meant to be taken at face value with no criticism. The whole of Unity feels like that, honestly, just reeking of “these people/organization are best friends with the CIA” with all of the negative baggage that brings. To my leftist ass it really feels Vengeance is near unambiguously good in their fight against Unity/UN/US, if obviously fairly extreme, so it feels weird for that to be treated as the obvious “evil” path (not surprising at all, just weird-feeling on my end).

oh girl not at all i completely agree with u i think nick is very obnoxious. i also think he has enough loveable moments to him to make me not completely despise him but i absolutely agree he can be sooo insufferable. he’s like one of the most OP people in unity and clearly his parent’s favourite and he’s like “:pensive_face: woe is me… my life is so hard having u as a sibling…”

i think the most insensitive thing he said in my playthroughs is when my MC is reluctant to have tests done on them (after nick enters their mind) bc they have a fear of reliving their “guinea pig childhood” and then nick’s all “but guinea pigs are so cute tho!!”

like…… really….. my flabber was absolutely gasted at his audacity. like yes obviously guinea pigs are cute everyone knows that, but ur sibling has been subjected to endless doctors’ tests their whole childhood and very much doesn’t want to do that again and you’re making a funny teehee joke about it? if i was MC i’d go up to nick’s unconscious body to give him a swift hit in the nutsack for saying that.

ALSO HEAVY AGREE. unity is clearly just another corporation/government organisation that has undoubtedly done super shady and immoral shit and im not sympathetic to them at all tbh. i wouldn’t be surprised if they committed war crimes against korea tbh. im not invested at all in the MC’s desire to work for them because all i can think about is how much corruption is rampant in corporations like that. it’s like when the MC is a cop, i just can’t stop thinking about how hard it is to relate to people that want to succeed in systems that are well known for being unjust.

also. the name “unity” for a company that is undoubtedly run by detached corporate elites is appropriately pretentious.

Vengeance isn’t portrayed as evil because they’re fighting unity, they’re portrayed as evil because they go out of their way to slaughter civilians for basically no purpose whatsoever

It’s interesting that you feel this way. In a way I think I kinda get it, in that maybe it just feels good to see some sort of group or character that is in opposition to them… and that it maybe would feel weird and wrong if the only real opposition to them was a bigoted terrorist group that kills innocent people?

It feels like what’s maybe missing is some sort of character that is like Not Unity, Not Vengeance, but a secret third thing. Someone who hates and disavows both groups, while not being a milquetoast liberal / centrist about it. (I hate, hate, hate bringing up politics even vaguely because I know how discussions can get if you bring it up, but I find it a little unavoidable in this case)

Unless this is the niche the mysterious terrorist character would fill. It certainly would make sense for them to fill that niche.

I have more I could say about this (and about Vengeance, in particular), but I might just leave it at that for now.

Yes Noh is the third side

For what it’s worth we’re largely on the same page, especially about the politics of the secret third thing not being liberal. I’m probably not totally on board with Vengeance, but I’m absolutely against Unity and the only way to take down shit like that is drastic actions, and usually that involves working with not great people. Nothing against Ments conceptually (beyond my PCs personal hatred due to her circumstance), they’re just born with it by chance (and a splash of weird gross eugenic-y bloodline shit that’s gonna lead to a divinely chosen ruler if you’re not careful), so the ire directed at all of them is misplaced. But directing it at people like Grayson, who literally comes back from (implied) happily and nonchalantly fucking murdering someone for the US government? Totally correct but their existence as Ments technically has jack shit to do with being a hired killer working for a known genocidal fascist government, that’s just the shtick Unity runs on because they can be more effective than an average person.

Only practical way to take out ment threats like the psycho that killed K’s mom and those running the north Chorean regime is with the use of other ments. Unity isn’t perfect, but it does it’s job.
UCRT isn’t some black budget hit squad, it’s just another arm of federal law enforcement.

Exactly my problem with it

Seriously, that’s just it, that’s what I don’t like about them more than anything. Every single thing I say about them I apply to all law enforcement and law enforcement adjacent entities.

My mc is horrendously down bad for sally

If Kenna didn’t exist, Sally would be my favorite romance. She as almost the exact same sense of nerdy humor as I do and she’s one of those people who everybody gets along with.

Can you even romance Sally jn the current demo? I

Yep

Do you get to kiss her?

Yep. The romance starts really early too. Make sure to spend time with Sally when given the chance in chapter 5 (or 4? I don’t remember :sob: when you get a day off). I think the author wanted to add a romance starting point towards the end of the game too for those who don’t want to trigger it early on but I don’t know if she has anymore

You’re not crazy. I learned to appreciate the subtlety of Rosy’s romance more when I code-dived and discovered the nuances in their behavior towards Buttons they approve of and/or are also attracted to. I think it’s a very fine line to write a tasteful teacher/student romance, especially during a high-risk mission like that. As such, their self-denial/reluctance for a large part of the game makes sense to me.

That said, the last couple of unreleased chapters will make or break the romance for me because I expect to be fed. Rosy better be down bad for my Button – and embarrassingly so. I mean, Jo posted this on Tumblr about them re: how they would propose to Button:

Rosy: Takes Button to Korea. While sitting on a park bench near where Rosy was born, they wordlessly hand Button a ring case. When Button opens it, there’s an engagement ring and a date sharpied on the lid interior–a date from three years ago, shortly after the two first started dating. When Button asks what the date means, Rosy confesses it’s when they bought the ring.

giveittome

Not the proposal, obviously. The sentiment. Because my Button took one look at this single most ridiculous person they had ever seen, laughed, and knew right away that Rosy was their forever-gremlin.

You’re right, and I hope we can play a Button who can turn their back on the copaganda they grew up with in the Wiseman household without necessarily having to align with Vengeance to oppose Unity. Vengeance, for me, isn’t the way here but I expect the possible endings to be more varied than “Let’s just keep the status quo” and “Down with all Ments!”

Yeah. My Button has 87% resentful and 77% approval with Rosy. She’s also morbid as hell. So it works.

Did you get the scene with him in his office? That’s the closest to “romance” you get from Rosy, from what I can tell. So, yeah, he’s super slow burn. I’d be shocked if we get a kiss from him by the end of the game.

That actually made me laugh. The whole “woe is me, I’m the most powerful and special boy ever, it sucks so bad!” was ridiculous. And the fact that he was whining to Zero made it that much worse. I agree he’s insufferable, though he does love Zero. It just ends up coming across as patronizing a lot of times.

Surprisingly, I agree with this. If it was run by someone who wasn’t a murderous psycho (sorry, Reese, but you need help), I think it could do some good, instead of just randomly harming people to make a point that doesn’t get made because it’s too violent and extreme.

Putting the victims of ments on screen for everyone to see just how dangerous the ments are to normies would be a good step. It’s not about fear mongering, either, it’s about showing a clear and present danger. Hell, if the MC told their story to the world–how they’ve been mind-controlled not only by “harmless” little shits when they were a kid but by their own mother (unintentionally, but it happened) and ments who mean to do harm, it would be an eye opener. One that could backfire, of course, because then people can see Button as a danger to the world due to their broken brain.

The focus needs to be put on creating a drug that doesn’t alter ments, but protects non-ments from ments. That permanently blocks normie brains from ments, so they can’t be read or controlled ever.

That pissed me off so much. He’s so dismissive of what the MC suffers through. And not even in a “I don’t care, I expect more from you” way that Rosy does. It’s more patronizing and condescending.

Mine, too.

Agreed. It’s too lukewarm right now, bordering on cool/cold to work as a romance for much longer.

I hope so, too.

I’ve played the Vengeance route in the Patreon demo and, honestly, it’s more satisfying than the idea of going back to the status quo of Nick being in the MC’s head 24/7 and MC being incapable of taking care of themselves. No romance is better than a romance where Button feels like a liability. And the… scene… where Button feels “lighter” at the end just didn’t work for me. It felt patronizing, and my morbid Button wouldn’t have suddenly felt better after that.
