Lords of Aswick - Out Now!

The Franks are a whole different breed altogether. Franks were south-Germanic tribes that displaced Celts with the help of the late Roman Empire. The Franks shaped the entire future medieval culture in much of Europe thanks to post-Charlemagne Karlings. By the time of the Vikings, the Franks had shifted culturally a whole bunch from what they were during the late Roman Empire.
The closest western European equivalent would be the Saxons, but once they shifted into Anglo-Saxons, they too left a lot of that Germanic vibe in exchange for Angle, Celt and Latin influence.

The viking culture was very different from contemporary Anglo-Saxon, Frankish and even other Germanic cultures. Plenty of records show that there were deep divides between cultures, from religion to the place of women and children in society, and to sheer policy of expansion. The vikings were absolutely ruthless expansionists, their conquests fuelled by European and African slave trade and raiding. They conquered pieces of Spain, Italy, Sicily, Bulgaria, England, Scotland, France, Germany, North Africa, Crimea, the Baltic region… These guys had a culture of sending people to serve as the elite guard of the Byzantine Roman Emperor, they were everywhere. The Franks in comparison don’t really hold a candle to vikings, even with the fullest extent of the Holy Roman Empire. Hell, the vikings more or less founded the trading posts along the rivers deep in Russia and eastern Europe that ended up becoming centres for the many principalities of Rus.

Man, I’m such a history nerd.

If I were to write a viking-themed story in this world, it would probably be very different from what a lot of people would expect. Even those who have experience watching the excellent HBO show Vikings. There’s a lot there that a lot of people don’t know, with popular culture and history lessons usually focusing on either the romantic ideal of a liberal democratic society or the horrible murderous horde in longships.

then how did the actual French come and I knew they weren’t Vikings they were Nordic but they were some kind of barbarian or at least the roman equivalent and there country is right were France is now just much bigger

You could write about the Normans in Normandy, they were vikings and french.

@kingzug France is the country of Gauls, who were the local culture during Roman time. When the Romans pushed into what we now know as Germany, they took several Germanic tribes as tributaries, such as the Franks. When the Roman Empire became weaker and weaker in the west, the Western Emperor gave preferential status to the Frankish leaders, granting them land in eastern France. The Franks more or less filled out a power vacuum in western Europe left by the collapse of the Western Roman Empire. Ultimately Charlemagne, king of the Franks, would go on to conquer the whole of France and Germany and parts of Italy, forming the Holy Roman Empire, which leads to a whole new interesting section of history with France, Italy, Holy Roman Empire, Aquitaine and oh so many other large Kingdoms and Empires. The Kingdom of the Franks later on just became the Kingdom of France.

@tom The Normans are a very peculiar bunch. After a few generations, they got very much melded into the French court system and culture, although they were known to give the French kings no small headaches on occasion. It might be interesting if well done, but I think it would be much too much of an exploration of French court structures and laws from the perspective of outsiders. It doesn’t really tickle my fancy that much to do that for an entire story.

I have learned something today

Love love it!! I bother my lady quite a bit by playing it all the time :/. Now question is what happen to my brother in the holy see?

How do you become the hammer of Norwall?

Ah, the brother. If he is not forced to return and pick up the responsibilities of nobility after your death, he will remain in the clergy. After his extensive time in the University, he will end up becoming a fully fledged priest. Because he is only technically tied to nobility, he will have a meagre life in the middle-management of the church. He won’t rise to great importance, but he’ll end up as the equivalent of a suffrogan bishop in his later years. If he entered the church, some of his life events will be explored in further detail in the future sequel.

Great!!! Hey out of curiosity is the sequels going to be taking place in a War of the Roses scenario or more of English Civil War? If that case maybe are MC can pull Sir Francis Drake.

I think this first one was to some degree the War of the Roses scenario.

The very next story will be more concentrated on early Renaissance upheavals, the threat of heresies budding up, and the Holy Seat recovering land and prestige from the city states and merchant powers around it. It will also be the story to introduce future colonial ventures. I can’t say anything more specific than that right now.

So do we pick who the mc is since there twins or do we go back and forth? Oooh snap are characters could possibly be a Condottieri of free company maybe even Prince of City State or Bring the Renaissance to Norwall!!

The MC will be the twin joining the clergy and making moves within that hierarchy. There will still be moments to influence things in Aswicdale, but the main meat of intrigue will be happening either outside of Norwall or on a much higher level than just the Norwallian nobility. There will be opportunities to interact with Norwall and influence the spread of Renaissance culture there as well.

Since the Holy Seat is a sovereign state in its own right, there may be some battles the MC can get involved in. Ultimately a Norwallian Archbishop, Cardinal, or maybe even a Holy Father, wield greater power than any Norwallian Prince of a city-state ever could.

Are you working on that now

Cause it sounds awsome

Working on Best of Us right now. I might also work on another project before I return to this world, which is a project I have already started on. I am drafting the core of the sequel, however, and it is high on the to-do list.

I bet that the best of us will be just as good as this one and don’t worry I think anyone who really likes this game will be able to wait for the sequal

Oh and I can’t win while trying to make Stephen King how do you do it

Could you possible hint about the Path of non clergy twin?

Presumably they’ll follow a similar path to the one we did. Being groomed as the heir to the family’s lands, training to be a knight and warrior, and one day taking over his father’s lands and becoming involved in the politics of the realm.

@Misa101

The most important choice is to gather allies when preparing for the war. Also, assuming your wife is from a powerful/wealthy family, request aid from them.

@Misa101 You require good allies - from marriage or otherwise - and the valour to fight through the battles. As usual, I will not give specific amounts required or specific paths as answers, but it has been discussed in this thread before if you’re up for a skim. It is doable, but even if you fail, there’s a path to take in banishment. Don’t skip that just because you want to win.

@Rogar He becomes the Earl of Aswicdale and handles things at home and in the Parliament. He may end up an indirect rival, or an ally.
