“I Care for her” feeling is the foundation of love and I think the day Marxus thought that he will try to make mellisa happy was the day the love started developing and when he himself realised that he cares for her he was already in love.
Love necessarily doesn’t need words it needs realisation and I am sure that if mellisa had moved on she would have realised by now that Marxus loves him but because she is still in love ( or infatuated or just yandreish) with us so it is working as a veil and thus could also explain marxus’s anger towards MC.

In the cannon, Reinhardt was a right jerk to Melissa (and pretty much everyone else). Plus he got together with Sophia, and nothing ever happened to either of them. Melissa just moved on. The end.
