I am going to agree with @Szaal, the “I care for her” statement needs to be in the formula somewhere. Now, in real life and some variations you have mentioned in the story, you van take that story too far and let it turn into obsession. Obsession, if taken to its conclusion, can sometimes lead people to do things they shouldn’t (read: love potion 
)
Now this is where MC can help, and you have some seeds planted already with the “Take her to the garden” choice. An MC who accepts their position in life (not having Mel, being married and cares about his brother) can advise Marxus on how to act on his feelings in a healthy way. If he is successful in his courtship, loving marriage may follow. Of course, the MC can leave Marxus hanging and you can make your bridge to love potion however you like. This could also come about if Marxus sees MC continuing to try to take his wife.
Edit: Stop pushing the conversation forward while I am typing a diatribe on my cell phone! Anyways, while dating I loved my wife and wanted to get to know her, be with her, etc. You can call that an obsession of sorts but I handled it in a healthy manner. If I was stalking her, wiretappimg her phone and denied contact with friends, that is an unhealthy obsession.
