It’s hard for me to feel too bad for Melissa (though it was likely very tragic for her to work up the courage to confess to her childhood friend and having him state he shared the same feelings, only to be unable to be with him due to the selfish adults in their life and then being arranged to marry his brother, just to add salt to a open wound), when I am told that she’d be selfish enough to harm the lover of the Second Prince if he manages to find a connection with another.
That action alone really does make me doubtful about how much she honestly cared about the bond between them when she won’t even let him be happy with another person when she knows it’s either really dangerous or almost impossible for the two of them to be together without something disastrous likely happening (it also doesn’t really help that, in the end, she is married to his brother and she made a active effort to avoid the Second Prince after said marriage).
And when I think about Sophia’s hardship due to birthright, Kris’ possible trials as a commoner living under Andus’ rule, and Clithus’ own harsh upbringing with her stern father, it’s hard to say Melissa has it the toughest when the only real thing she seemed to go through in her past was being unable to be with someone due to the fact her father was too terrified to object to the King’s demands (though it is a VERY understandable fear) and she herself didn’t even attempt to do something to object to the arrangement (again though, for understandable reasons. If Melissa had half as much guts to have been able to make some kind of objection to her arranged marriage (no matter how small or how quickly shot down) as she apparently does to harm the lover of the Second Prince after he manages to find someone he can actually be with (regardless of his feelings), I’d probably be able to have a little more sympathy for her.
Hopefully the Second Prince and her can talk it out at some point though, so that the whole Yandere subplot can be better avoided (like him telling her that she should let him go or that he’s moved on to another rather than her catching him in a romantic situation with his lover, which would likely be more traumatic and make her fall really deep into yandere tendencies).
