You know I’m starting to wonder about Melissa’s yandere tendencies towards the MC and Princess Sophia.
Melissa seems to proclaim her love for the MC unconditionally regardless of how he treats her, though she does so only after his identity as the Second Prince is revealed. Yet she seems unhappy with being wed to Marxus, despite her new husband being the Crown Prince which would make her the future Queen Consort.
This seems to affirm she isn’t power hungry and her actions are entirely emotional.
We don’t know too much about what the MC and Melissa did as kids during the timeskip but it seems the Second Prince became her best friend, his peasant boy persona meant Melissa could act without restrictions of noble demeanor, hence feeling at her truest self with the MC around.
I suppose his royal lineage was a bonus which made her realize she could indeed spend the rest of her life with someone she loved, hence she might see her marriage with Marxus as a denial of what she wanted and resists conforming to it.
To make matters worse the man she loves is married off to a foreign royal sorceress from the enemy nation, a political match that makes it even less likely for her to be reunited with the MC. No wonder she hates Princess Sophia, she’s like a living symbol of what denied her happiness with the MC.
