And how does he feel about being the sort’ve favored child of King Andus (I say sort’ve because I don’t feel like his father’s emotional distance fostered much of a sense of affection for the boy) and seeing the way that his younger brother is being treated by his father (especially if the little brother is one who showed a genuine desire to bond as family)? Does he even know how the Second Prince is being treated? If he does, is there a particular reason he’s staying as far away from the matter as possible?

I personally don’t hate Marxus. In fact (as a player) I’m looking forward to more event during the Prince childhood and beyond. And as Arlan, he loves the older boy and wants to genuinely help Marxus be a good king and be there for when his brother may need him more for emotional support than political advice.

But some may not hold much fondness for him due to being favored by the King and (as far as they are aware) not having to deal with the emotional abuse and neglect from their father that they have gone through. Other might even hate Marxus for not doing anything about the king’s treatment toward his younger brother, feeling that he of all people could’ve gotten the king to stop (a feeling that may well also extend to Victoria for some people, feeling the MOM should’ve done something more to prevent Andus’ treatment toward them).

Also, it’s actually not that uncommon in families where there’s clear favoritism toward a certain child, causing their sibling to resent them (and even develop a sense of rivalry with them) to a certain degree, even though the ‘favored’ child themselves suffers in a different way and that it’s not really their fault for their parents not trying to be equal with their affections in some way.

…That’s certainly not going to give Marcus much more support. If anything, it’s going to make people even more suspicious of him. And it kind of feels like it contradicts the whole ‘he’s a sweetheart’ comment from before.

…Is what I would say. But some people do manipulate those they care about it an honest belief that they’re helping them in some way. So it can still go either way with Marxus

Yep; if Arlan could, he would’ve hugged his brother as thanks for the gift. He trusts Marxus quite a bit and probably wouldn’t read too much into the gift as anything other than ‘my older brother gave me a birthday gift’. In Arlan’s eyes, Marxus seems like one of the few family members who isn’t trying to use him for some gain.

Even after that heartbreak, Arlan doesn’t really blame Marxus, much less Melissa or her family (he only blames King Andus, who he knows made this choice on purpose). In fact, he’d likely still be wearing the necklace as a silent show that his care and loyalty toward his brother is unwavering, despite how their parents are with each other. Whether Marxus will eventually realize that is another story.
