Aha, not at all! I just couldn’t remember what the name of the monthly writing discussion threads were! And I wasn’t going to go back and look!
I am never not happy to hear this!
I’m looking forward to writing it
. I feel like it’s been a while since I’ve done a deep-dive analysis of prose and mechanics.
I, for one, appreciate your thoughts, and found that they gave me additional thoughts of my own!
I genuinely have so much to think about; it’s not even funny. Here are my notes so far, unfiltered:
- Very different writing style. Short, abrupt. Screenplay/script format. Feels like a cold open. FADE IN: INT. LOCATION — TIME
-
Character names separated from dialogue, stage directions in parentheses, very little conventional narration
-
Short, stilted paragraphs, fragmentary/incomplete sentences, telegraphic writing, creates a clipped, abrupt, slightly disjointed rhythm
-
Often removes the subject/noun from the verb. Instead of: “He staggers toward the door," more like: “Staggers toward the door.”
-
Actions feel like camera directions rather than traditional prose
-
Narrative: good for being hunter. Always on edge, always feel like something’s missing. Makes the prose feel detached / observational
-
Emotional: hmmmmmm. Feel like an edgy, snarky boy as a narrator. Given up on the world. Cold. not as lyrical or melancholy as night road of knives. Just pure bitterness. Different but interesting
-
-
- Something meta, dichotomous, grief, etc. Meta / cinematic perspective. I am watching my character watch another character, creates distance between player and character
- Lots of references/callbacks/talk of earlier movies → theme of wanting to return to how things were. Characters/story keep looking backward, desire to undo or recover the past, can never go back, only forward. Lowkey meta. Weird
Now, what that all means put together? I have no idea, quite frankly.
No such thing! I, alas, cannot participate in the conversation because programming or coding or what have you is a scary thought, but this is a thread to talk about games we are reading!
