Interest Check Thread

Hie fellow forumers,I have been searching the history for Sim games on this forum found a few and I did’t get info that I needed. So I’m asking now and you might have a brilliant idea in your mind and help me out here.
I have WIP game one that I’m not ready to post about much on the forum but it is in medieval times.

Question:What Mechanics, you like to see in such a game no matter how much it might complicate things in code righting?***Based on Simulation.

I’d recommend you take a look at War for the West, and Swamp Castle, if you haven’t already. They come with heavy sim elements, and implement them quite well.

But as for mechanics, I’d have to know more context before deciding what I’d want from a medieval sim game like you described. Are we the lord of a castle? The mayor of a village? The dark lord? A tree?

New to the forum; and I submitted my CV and cover letter yesterday.
Today, I got a reply from CoG, and they recommended me to try writing for HG first, despite having more than 20 years of experience in writing and more than 10 years in game dev experience.

Now, onto the topic itself.
Is anyone interested in a high fantasy story featuring a cute female alchemist? This is highly inspired by the Atelier series of RPGs as well as the character Sucrose from Genshin Impact. It is also the third and last book of what I call the Amitabhilia Cycle, and the two previous books are already completed and hosted on another site.

Title: Falrika the Alchemist: A Lebenswasserheim Start-up Tale

Brief Outline: Falrika Marmont is just a simple girl with a simple dream: To become an alchemist. Through a series of events expected and unexpected, and with the help of people who will guide her along the way, her journey will be one that is out of the ordinary.

Setting: The setting is the high fantasy world of Amitabhilia; specifically, in the fictional kingdom of Lebenswasserheim. The kingdom spans many towns and other places and is generally a peaceful and benevolent one.

Characters

Falrika Marmont
Age: TBD. An aspiring alchemist. Her luck fluctuates between extremes; and when she gets unlucky, her experiments end up exploding. Nevertheless, her “never give up” attitude endears her to many.

Frida Panteleimon
Age: TBD. A retired alchemist who once owned the alchemy shop that Falrika now uses. She is kind of strict and kind of blunt, but she still has a kind heart.

The flow of the story is that Falrika will undergo several adventures with other adventurers around the world to gather ingredients, come up with alchemic creations, and she’ll then face a final challenge before she can call herself a full-fledged alchemist. There might also be F/M and F/F romances, though they’ll be mostly wholesome and/or platonic.

I also want to know if this is doable within two months. I’m really short on money right now, and I want to earn enough for my daily expenses, before I can jump onto HC and make some more money.

Well in a game like that, I’d be looking for budget, a reputation system, where your subjects can start a revolt if you are too disliked, and ways to improve infrastructure, economy, etc. Something like Crusader Kings would be a good reference.

And I’d want a pet dragon.

I’ll go ahead and do an interest check; I’ve been wanting to make an IF for a while now, but haven’t been able to find an idea that would be personally interesting for me to write while still fitting the medium (ie; not being an IF that should have been a novel or a VN with a set MC shdnfkj) and I have an idea that I think is really interesting, but needs some fleshing out(?)

It came about when I was thinking of more interesting ways to do the whole “MC customization” scene. The premise is basically “Oh! The MC died a bit ago! But one of their close friends is a little bit crazy and misses them a little bit too much and decides to bring them back to life!” You know. As you do. I only really have two characters (who will likely be ROs) pictured in my head right now; the aforementioned friend, and another friend that was also part of the extremely close friend group, who’s horrified by what they’ve done. I’ve always liked the “A group of highschoolers who were messing around make a mistake/discover something so traumatic that it irreversible changes them and they have to live with whatever happened as they grow up and drift apart, the other friends being the only people who Know even as they lead their own lives. And then they meet up again because the IncidentTM becomes relevant again somehow and there are “worlds worst polycule” vibes :person_shrugging:

I still have some kinks in the plot to work out, things like body decay, etc, while I’m trying to figure out how old I want the MC/group to be, and how long ago The IncidentTM happened. I don’t want the characterization of the MC’s reanimator to be one-note or flat, and be reduced to simply “the obsessed one”, but depending on how long ago the event was, it sort of just Happens. Any advice for that? And I’d like it to be a decent amount of time afterwards considering I want most people to have moved on in some form, sjdhfbijdns. Anyways, thoughts?

OH I forgot to mention that the whole “MC customization” idea that I had was that it would take place while he was um. Digging up your grave, shdfnukjds. The only thing about this is that the game would start with this scene, and I know that I prefer that games let you get a feel for the world and characters before the physical traits are asked for, so would the Reanimator to having a sort of flashback of different moments of the friend group help with establishing that? Before the part where he starts looking at the body? This game mostly came from a place of “There aren’t enough well-written polyamorous relationships here”, sdnfhjsdnf, considering most of them have the MC as the connecting point and the other ROs don’t tend to really have… chemistry? Which is just a vee relationship but I’d like more IFs where the connection between the other RO’s is just as important as the connection with the MC, and is just as developed instead of the MC being the one to introduce them sdjnfhksd.

Anyways, this is getting out of the thread topic so I’ll leave it at that. :stuck_out_tongue:

The Oracle: Downfall

Synopsis: Play as the hero “Oracle,” plagued by visions of the future as a new Villain, Ravagine, rises that threatens to turn the entirety of the City of Kolossós on it’s head. No one knew it was possible for someone to be able to strip the powers from another, until they made their debut through taking out the famous hero, Lilium. Your team was given the responsibility of helping to take them down, but to do that first you need to find them.

Genre(s): [Superhero] [Cyberpunk] [Dystopian] [Urban]

Planned Key Features:

  • Play as a Suit, or corporate hero, choose your gender, appearance, sexuality, and background!
  • Romantic Focus Planned [Who among the key cast will be romance-able is still up in the air.]
  • Explore the City in a way you never have before.
  • Pet a kitty [voluntarily, of course].
  • Change the fate of the City, or let the City decide yours - Will you paint a legacy or become a disgrace?

Key Characters:

Oracle (28, Gender Selectable)

It’s you!

Nova (36, Male)

Nova is the oldest member of the team, a bit cynical but also caring about the people involved in his life. A tactician capable of generating light and flight. While you are not privy to much information about his personal life due to his guarded nature, you know that he is from the Heart based off the way others treat him. He has warm sienna-toned skin and black straight hair cut usually in a slightly overgrown quiff style, when he isn’t wearing his cap to cover it. His costume covers his entire body excluding his eyes, and is comprised of several layers, with a white, silver, and crimson scheme.

Galvanist (29, Undetermined / Gender Selectable)

Able to manipulate and creating electric current [including lightning, fun!]. They are generally positive and well-meaning, though there is an underlying tension there… They do not care as much about having a separation between life and work, and their name is pretty publicly known as a result. They have very deep cool-brown natural skin, and tightly braided hair in an almost wave pattern trailing down their head into short tails. Their costume covers everything from the neck down excluding their fingers, and feet with a cerulean and black colour scheme.

Unity - (24, Gender Selectable)

Full of nervous energy, despite being designated the team’s primary public orator, they appear to struggle with the act. Having a pretty face isn’t enough to know how to communicate after-all, though they try to make up for it with their empathic powers. Being the youngest of the group, and still in the process of getting their powers under control, at times they can unintentionally broadcast their feelings onto others. At particularly intense times, you can even hear invasive thought as though it were your own. They have light olive skin, long straight black hair that is tied back in a secure bun. Their costume is a sleek version of Heart formal-wear in gold and cream, though they have said they’d prefer something more pragmatic.

Vermillion Chatelain (32, Gender Selectable)

A civilian with journalistic intent, be they able to publish it or not. They seem to know more than you in some regards, a sobering reality. They take an interest in your team and the investigation revolving around Ravagine. They appear careful to only be around when you are alone, though for what possible purpose you are unsure. They have dark, sharp eyes, with their most distinctive features being their thick brows and slightly notched bubble nose. Their hair is curly, reaching their ears before tapering to a near shave at the back of their neck, and they have a light amber skin-tone.

Masque (25, Agender)

A vigilante shifter working within the Pits, they appear to have a complex relationship with the upper side generally veering towards resentment. As someone who knows their way around the Pits better than anyone, you end up needing their help if you want to find your villain. Being able to shift their own appearance in addition to the general perspective of the Pits, they have developed a general apathy towards gender. They have pale, naturally rouged skin, light pink hair, and a distinctive set of tattoos around their neck and peaking on the tops of their hands. Their costume is light navy, orange, and black, polyester and faux leather, closer to Pits street clothes than the durable high quality mesh material of corporate Suit costumes.

Ravagine (?Thirties?, ???)

A villain with directly malicious intent, why do you get the feeling that there is more than just malicious evil behind them? What could possibly justify their actions? Nothing, surely. For one, you have only seen them in their neon green and black suit, sleek and obscuring most of their key features. Pragmatic, no frills, though even if there was you are unsure you’d get a detailed view without it costing you something dear.

Current Demo Status: Upcoming - [Currently Estimating sometime next month, but could be sooner or later depending on how much more I decide to do before I start writing. Want to see illustrations, world-building, and other behind the scenes content while I work on the Demo? Check out my Patreon.]

Which of these shitters would you romance? [You can pick multiple if more than one interest you]

  • Nova [Caring Star]
  • Galvanist [Skeptical Optimist]
  • Unity [Nervous Oddball]
  • Masque [The Vigilante]
  • Vermillion [The Journalist]
  • Ravagine [Big Bad Wolf]
  • None of the Above [Damn–]

Note: Everything is currently in early development and apt for change, particularly right now. Still, I want to gauge interest. I have been working on this project for the past few weeks. I am still working on Shengzhang, but I wanted book of a different genre to work on when I am in the mood to do something else. Also, I’m not planning for all the major characters to be romance-able, only 1-3. I fully encourage feedback and thoughts though! Please feel free to share what you think  .

Have you ever considered turning this project into a Visual Novel or something else? I’m not going to discourage you or anything but people in here mostly want self-insert and customization in their IF and your fully established protagonist with gender-locked and set name may turn off a lot of people (not that something I mind and I like a cute alchemist girl)

Maybe you can do something like Atelier Online, let the player choose the alchemist’s gender and name. Ah, I miss that game…

I want something about a system that can decide the political system, a self-governing council, and a civil servant system.

And if possible, I’d also add something about the judicial system, like juries and lawyers.

Well, I do have plans of turning the entire cycle into one huge visual novel, but I’ll stick with the IF format for now.

Again, I hate to promise so many features if they would just be half-baked in the end, not to mention being a nightmare to code.

I might have to stick with set chapters, with branches and varied endings depending on relationship values. It will also be narrative-driven, as I can see other WIPs that are these.

The premise is inspired by Angel Beats, perhaps? The anime is now over 10 years old.

I’m sorry but I’ve never heard of this in my life-

Wow, I loved this anime. And I had completely forgotten. Thanks for the nostalgic bomb! :joy: Oh, it’s way over 10 years old, I remember watching it when I was in the first year of high-school.

Edit: Ok, I remember it wrong, it’s from 2010 apparently.

To thank everyone who has participated in the poll so far, here is a WIP for the illustration for Unity [since they are currently the winner of the poll!], if you want to see the finished illustration when it’s done you know where to go  . If you haven’t responded yet, I’m still curious, I was very surprised to how many people were interested in Unity though!

You may not want to emphasize this in promoting your Hosted Game, especially if the previous works in the cycle are not interactive. Some share of your audience will stay away if they feel that they won’t understand what’s happening without first investing time into a couple of non-interactive novels. I’d recommend promoting this work as a standalone, and at the end point people to the other novels you’ve written – I think you’ll get more people trying it that way.

As others have noted, there’s a strong expectation in the Choicescript game player base that they’ll get to choose their gender and name; a fixed character story will find a smaller audience. But you should write what you have a passion for!

And that’s why I’ll include an in-game codex to assuage those fears.

That will help… but I still think emphasising “Book 3 of 3” in your promotions will reduce your readership, even if people get that they can catch up on Books 1 and 2 via codex. Your call, though.

Yup, I understand your point. Since the story will focus on a new set of characters, yes, it can be enjoyed standalone. Of course, I won’t pressure players to read the previous two novels, so I’ll follow your recommendation and not promote the “book 3 of 3” thing, especially with the fact that it’s a somewhat detached after story.
