Well, when it comes to a barricade system I would kind of like it but only if I have to really earn it such as having to go to several different places to scout a location, then stay there a while to see if it would be feasible, coming up with how I wouldn’t attract attention and keep fed and clothed, etc. But that’s also time and energy that can go to other areas of the game so I’m fine either way.

No opinion on set or random order of scenes per action, except maybe that random would help with replay value but if predetermined scenes have enough options then that would offset it and some people may prefer it for planning ahead.

Your concerns with the barricade system is exactly why I’m a bit hesitant in implementing one right now.

Good point on the predetermined scenes. Maybe I could combine a little bit of both; we’ll see.

Progress is as slow as molasses. Chalk it up to other obligations or downright laziness, but I try to make do.

Update!

(Unreleased) Version 0.2

Added new scenes and some first encounters.
Added a lot of background stuff. Took much time for this one, hah.
Edited prologue.

I’ll release it when I think it’s clean enough. (In a day or two I guess?)

Yeah, I have a habit of editing stuff until I’m satisfied before moving on to other things, so it kinda kills progress.

Also, I realize multiple path encounters take a lot of coding; I’m guessing only 30-40% of the variations in the encounters I’ll create will be seen in one playthrough.

And is it good practice to code first then write later? I usually just have a very rough outline in my head, plot it out in code -using placeholders for the text-, and the write it out as soon as coding is done.

It’s good to code first, I believe. That way, you won’t have to cut and edit through text when you realise you can’t seem to implement it the way you wanted to. Also, it’s nice to see that you have that many variations planned, it makes people to want to play this again if they are informed that they may get new content they haven’t seen in their previous playthrough.

Update may come later than expected, sorry. Don’t wanna burn myself out so early. I have some stuff that’s kinda polished, but I’m not sure if I should post it just yet. At most it’s roughly 2000 words, not to mention edited stuff as well as new/reworked mechanics.

On to another topic, is it just me, or are survival/survival horror games getting a lot of attention lately? Survival themed games are popping up everywhere; many are zombie themed as well. I wonder how it all started.

@2Ton I read I am legend and watch all 3 versions of the film and I don’t remember them ever being referred to as zombies. But I do believe you were right about zombies being from voodoo zombies and the living dead series bringing it mainstream

@2Ton Not just zombies; survival in general. Sure, there’s DayZ, Project Zomboid, Cataclysm, State of Decay that revolves around trying to survive in a zombie apocalypse, but there’s also Don’t Starve, Lone Survivor, The Forest, Castaway, The Stomping Land, Minecraft (to some extent), and a smattering of other smaller games found online whose names I can’t remember.

Zombies seem to be the more predominant theme though.

EDIT: Wow, the gameplay [reading the wiki for a bit] does remind me about my system, even the ones I havent coded in yet. Just a disclaimer: never played it before, so any instance of too similar ideas/mechanics are purely coincidental. #:-s

@Incompatibility I never got that game… idk if it’s just me(probably is) but that game just seemed lacking. It had really great ideas and you have to work with others and things, but If it’s a zombie game I like some sort of combat system. Die2nite has one but when I played it incorporated water balloons and squirt guns, and a zombie outbreak without real weapons seems kinda lame.

yea the combat is kind of silly, but I enjoyed it since I got a large group of friends and we were 25% of the town population, giving us a lot of power, so we can condemn a lot of people >:)

New content! Meet your first friend.
Reworked prologue. Now with weirder writing and pre-set names!
Additional background content in place; many not yet implemented.
A butt-load of coding changes and improvements.

Decided to just give a minor update instead. I cut off some stuff, most of which concern the hub system and a few bare scene that coincide with it. That’ll take a while.

As usual, feel free to comment or suggest! Though I’d like to glean more comments regarding my writing and the logical consistency of the choices.

This looks really cool so far, but I just want to point something out that I encountered during a playthrough as a female protagonist.

I tried to view the stat screen right after the initial stat picking, but when I tried to look at the stat screen, an error popped up saying:

“line 73: It is illegal to fall in to an *else statement; you must *goto or *finish before the end of the indented block.”

i was wondering if the “cutters” are zombies? But in the story they don’t necessarily sound like zombies either. Another cool thing that you could add with the “Cutters” is that their could be special ones with just regular ones like for example: their could be ones that can see heat like inferred and stuff like that if you wanted to do this of course since it’s all up to you great story so far!

They have similarities to zombies, but only to an extent. After conceptualizing them I realize I might have imitated the Lickers from Resident Evil, barring a few substantial differences. No copyright infringement intended. Though I imagine mine as much more…rugged. Hah.
