Also, I mentioned this on tumblr already, but just so everyone here knows, the editing was a lot more extensive than I expected, so it looks like the next chapter will be out February instead of this month.
No worries at all about the timeline shift – editing surprises are part of the writing journey. Thanks for keeping us in the loop! Looking forward to the magic you weave in the next chapter come February. And hey, if you need a breather or some inspiration, check out these intriguing tarot spreads https://moretarot.com/ . Happy writing, and here’s to an amazing February release!
Thanks for being understanding! I hope the chapter doesn’t disappoint once it’s out. And thanks for the tarot spread links, too! I actually love to hoard these and try them out, it’s so much fun.
Added a new chapter (31k words total). Lots of branching paths, with two very different possible endings.
Added a single line to chapter 4 to give the sweeper in the sawmill some more personality since he plays a slightly bigger role than originally planned. (It’s nothing big, just him giving you a bit of side-eye cuz he’s a grumpy old dude. No need to replay chapter 4 if you’ve already finished it.)
Tried to balance the mental wellbeing fluctuations a bit better in chapter 4. Also took out the possibility of losing intuition early in the chapter - that was a dumb decision and I regret it. So I fixed it.
If possible, I’d really appreciate feedback on the following points:
Continuity! This chapter went through a lot of rewrites, so please let me know if there’s anything that doesn’t make sense or doesn’t jive with earlier chapters.
There are lots of branching paths in the new chapter, so please tell me if anything seems out of place!
New choice suggestions - places you wanted a certain option but there wasn’t one, etc.
Thoughts on difficulty level. Too easy? Too hard? I’m especially concerned with the player experience during the “search” scene.
Out of curiosity, which ending did you get for this chapter?
Loved the update. Also, I’m looking forward to seeing what happens with Hest as the story continues since that was quite the cliffhanger!! Really loved meeting N too, they were honestly the most adorable RO I’ve seen in a while, and I like how you made them shy romantically while still being assertive in their work and conversations with others. It’s a nice rarity to witness. Love the family feels, and the awkward crush on T, and I would absolutely die for Pily. Great work overall. I could just eat this story up, for real.
Ooh, that’s a cool idea! It may be a while before the player character can get tattoos (maybe if they travel outside of Eirwood?), but it does give me an idea for giving the player a chance to make a pocket-sized book of sigils so that they don’t have to worry about having a piece of charcoal/chalk/pen and paper every time they want to cast something.
Although, on that note, I do have something planned for players with really high concentration, but I won’t say too much since I’m not sure how to implement it yet.
I’m glad you’re enjoying it! I worry sometimes that I’ll lose out on popularity by focusing more on family instead of the ROs (who I’m planning to give more screentime later, but are pretty scarce for the first half of the story)… buuut it’s just how I want to write, so it’s what I’m doing.
Also, that’s one of the things I love writing about N. They’re not super outgoing but are serious about their work and goals. I’m a sucker for the trope of “competent professionally but turns into a puddle of goo when it comes to romance.”
Good question! I’ve tried to make it so that no matter which stats you choose, you’ll have a fun experience playing, regardless of whether your stats are all the same or if you’ve maxed out one completely. I tried to do it this way so that the player can focus more on playing the game however feels most nvatural rather than metagaming or “building the perfect character.”
That being said, if you have more balanced stats OR specialize in one stat and have a secondary one that’s more “mid,” it might make the game a bit easier since it’ll give you more options.
Minor spoiler, but not really since it's implied/hinted at already
You will have future run-ins with Arren. When you do, he’ll have to give your cards back thanks to the deal you made. It’s not a permanent loss, but more of a temporary handicap.
Also important to note: there are a couple of things you learn when you take Arren’s deal that you won’t find out otherwise. So, making the deal with Arren isn’t a complete “lose-lose” scenario, but more of a pros & cons situation.
I love it!! The lore and the characters are intriguing and the interaction between them all was so satisfying
Thank you so much for this story. I’m looking forward to the next update
I’ve been following this story for a while and this is one of my favorite WIPs. It feels magical how the tarot cards slowly change to adapt to your tastes. I really enjoyed the rewrites, particularly the short scene at the start with the MC’s father, where we could get a glimpse of his personality.
As for the ending in chapter 5,
The checks for the search scene feel reasonable. As someone completely terrible with deduction, I was able to find the hexed tile and have Sister Nefris destroy the other hidden hex.
Thank you for sharing this story with us. I’m excited to see how it will develop in the future.
Thank you! It warms my heart that people are enjoying the story. Pumps me up to write more.
Yes! Thanks for the feedback. I was worried since writing the many, many search options got pretty convoluted, but if it plays out well, that’s all that matters.
This update was actually implemented in mid-March, but I procrastinated on making a post about it.
Added a couple of new sigils that you learn at the beginning of the chapter. If you played the chapter before mid-March, don’t worry, you won’t need to replay the chapter to get them - I’m including a bit of code in the next chapter to make sure you get the sigil either way.
Minor bug/game balance fixes - mainly fixing how much spiritual energy certain spells/actions use up.
Slight adjustment to Stats page - added some more details on how much spiritual energy sigils use up.
Again, these changes are from mid-March, and I just wanted to make a note of it. The next chapter is coming along slowly but surely; RL has been pretty crazy these past couple of months.
Quick question for folk: I’ve been looking at the outline I have planned out and the way the story is going so far, and wondering if I should split this into two books instead just one.
If I split it into two, I’d be able to go more in-depth, maybe add more scenes/dialogue with characters, but it’d take a lot longer to finish. One book means a bit of a tighter storyline (hopefully not rushed!), although I wouldn’t be able to make as much time for side characters/ROs.
