The Chosen One™ sits by a campfire, holding his palms out to catch some warmth from the flames. A breeze ruffles his curly brown hair. For all that he looks like an ordinary human, he’s the Hero of Prophecy, the Lightwielder, the orphaned farmboy destined to save the world from the Night Lord’s tyrannical rule.
And I’m the one who’s going to kill him.
I AM NOT THE HERO is an interactive fantasy novel featuring clichés that are more than they initially appear. The main character navigates an increasingly unrealistic fantasy world in which their every choice seems to send the world further and further into chaos—which may or may not be a good thing.
This WIP is still in the early stages, but I think there’s enough here to convey what kind of story it will be. The demo contains Chapters 1 + 2 and currently sits at ~21 000 words (excluding code), with an average playthrough of ~8000 words. I’m really looking forward to hearing what you think!
Fair warning: this story is told in first person. The main character is NOT the player. There are also no numerical stats. I wanted the story to read more like a novel than a game, though there is still plenty of narrative variability.
Anyway, here’s the demo

Any and all feedback is appreciated!
Violence, possibly a bit of swearing.
The main character can build relationships with various other characters throughout the narrative. Romance isn’t really the focus of this story, and any romance choices will be kept PG.
There are 6 relationship characters in total: 2 female, 2 nonbinary, and 2 male
In this demo:
Nerion Ashflame (m) - a human wizard.
Calista Castalan (f) - a human warrior.
Inya Felise (f) - a human…cat.
Rorvar Ladran (nb) - an elvish thief.
The following relationship characters will appear in Chapter 3:
Ifrin (m) - a fellow servant of the Night Lord.
Phox (nb) - a talking fox (???)
*The main character’s affinity with each of these relationship characters is currently tracked with numerical values assigned to each choice the player makes. However, I don’t like the idea of scenes being blocked by stat checks, so I may not keep this feature going forward.
The main character’s gender presentation can be chosen in Chapter 2.
All other characters are gender-locked.
