I’m pretty interested in the genders that come out on top, but I’m especially fascinated by the runners-up - that currently Matia and Savarel have “all feel right” as their second-places and the others have a different binary gender. Really intriguing!

If you picked something other than “all feel right”, did that have to do with picking a gender whom you wanted to romance, or something else about how they’re written?

(I don’t know if this contributes to anything, but Fiore is the one whose outfits change the most depending on gender currently - partly because some of the others have been in uniforms that don’t change based on gender when onscreen.)

I picked all feel right for everyone except Matia, and I think that’s mostly due to trans-related stuff and in that they feel more relatable to me as a woman.

I’m really enjoying the story but presently am not super pulled towards any one RO, so maybe that’s why I don’t have a strong preference for gender in general.
(not that I don’t care for them or find them interesting as characters, there just isn’t a ‘I MUST smooch you!’ character for me)

Fiore: I chose nonbinary for Fiore and am really surprised so few others did. I’ve played through with each option and NB was by far the one that seemed to me to suit them best.

Korzha: I chose male and after playing with a female Korzha went right back to male. Nothing else felt right, though I may still try with an NB run before the next update. I just can’t imagine it working, though.

Matia: I like Matia “most” as male, though there was so little difference on my NB and female playthrough and just a hair of a difference between those two and male that I chose all feel right for them. Possibly it’s an influence of them having transitioned.

Raffi: I always choose male for Raffi. I don’t know why, I’ve no interest in them as a character at all. But they just seem like a guy. Honestly if “wallpaper” or “puppy” had been options I would have chosen one of those.

Savarel: I chose all feel right for Savarel. I don’t like them, so I don’t particularly care how they present, none stood out more or less for me.

When I play I tend to set the genders for Fiore (nonbinary always, not planning to romance because I don’t like the kid,) Korzha and Matia (K male always, may do playthroughs with M NB as well as M, plan to romance and polymance both,) Raffi (male always but no plans to ever romance,) but Savarel I leave up to chance (never planning to romance.)

Fiori: gives me very strong mom vibes with the tenderness and fussing. Feels like mom is losing connection with her daughter now she’s grown up, and can’t relate to Caterine’s struggles, as hers were different.

Raffi: male. Gives me the golden retriever boy, well meaning but incompetent bro vibes.

Korzha: any. I chose female because i prefer women in position of power and leadership, but korzha is a reserved person, could be any gender

Matia: non binary. Feels like an upbeat person marching to their own drum, with a flexible approache to life and gender, unless the subject is the sister lol

Savarel: male. Idk, he gives me Father vibes. I know the priest attire is blue robes, but i can picture him in a catholic priest black ensemble with the white neck thingie and a scruffy beard. Malewife.

I love the idea of shapping the teenager.

@izzily Thank you for sharing! I’m really interested when people are female-Matia enjoyers and am pleased that they come across well

@AnneWest haha, Raffi would probably be like “yeah I would be more interested in a puppy than I would be in myself too” :poodle:

@Nana1 thank you, I am now obsessed with the idea of Savarel as malewife. Not manipulate or mansplain though, that’s not their style

I should have used this in my poll:

Fortnightly Progress Report:

I’ve been a little sick this fortnight, but I’m on the mend now. I drafted Chapter 6 of Honor Bound, submitted Chapter 5 and Chapter 6 to my editor, and have done my edits for both chapters. I’ve also started planning and coding Chapter 7, a chapter which is going to involve a lot of Peril. Once I’ve balanced the difficulty, I’m looking forward to writing it next week!

Honor Bound current wordcount: 258800
Honor Bound fortnight’s wordcount: 19,840
Honor Bound current playthrough length: 66,221 (longer than Creme de la Creme now!)

In other news, I got to the cinema and watched Saltburn last week, and you can read some of my chaotic thoughts here. I didn’t think it was a…great film by any means but the actors did a great job with what they had and it gave me a lot to think about, which is nice as I don’t go to the cinema much. Plus I am always up for alarming happenings in posh houses, and it had the cousin of an actor from the Revenge TV show (which I was very into in 2011) in it which entertained me greatly.

Hope you all have a good weekend!

I haven’t played this yet, but I wanted to say that I’m excited that you have the choice of playing as a middle aged character. So few IF’s have that, which is a shame - it’s fun to play a character who’s had some serious life experience and a personality shaped by it.

It’s coming together. Slowly, but surely. Things are far more coherent than the previous entries (Creme, Royal, Noblesse) since you had far more time to work on this. The start is much stronger and clearer. The action and romance are also more well-balanced and flow more naturally. Something that I’ve been hoping for. Thank you and all the best for the subsequent chapters! I certainly like where this is heading!

@Erized thank you! It wasn’t something I initially planned at the very beginning, but just before I started coding Chapter 1, I realised I wanted to make the most of making something in a non-school setting that wasn’t tied to being a younger adult like Noblesse Oblige. I’m not sure if I’d have thought of it, though, if I hadn’t been working on the additional writing for Elite Status at the same time, which includes an age option. Once I did, things fell into place nicely as it meant that I could include things like customers of different ages speaking a bit differently to the PC, having some shared or different experiences with characters of similar ages, etc. (For example, although the military has been a part of all the major adult characters’ lives, they’ve all gone through very different trajectories and relate to it very differently.)

@RockmanX thank you, I’m glad you’re enjoying! I do find that although the chapters are tending to be longer, I’m in a better position to remember the details of each one as I go.

Chapter 4 is now up on Patreon for subscribers at £6+ and the early access demo is now at around 173,000 words! In Chapter 4, you can expect:

  • a change of scene as you take a trip to the capital with Korzha
  • partying and politicking with military and non-military types alike
  • fighting, crying, hugging
  • the nicest restaurants you’ve ever been to

Chapter 4 will be up for everyone on 2nd January. In the meantime, I’ve updated the public demo on Dashingdon and itchio (which is identical to the Dashingdon version except that progress is saved in your browser if you click away from or close the tab you’re playing in).

Changes to both the public and early access demos:

  • tweaks and polish to Chapters 1-3, including some small religious lore references and a few extra options and descriptions for trans or nonbinary MCs
  • Added more achievements - some are attainable by the end of Chapter 3 and some are not yet
  • Added an option at the start of the game to broadly tailor your character and early choices, and skip to later chapters if you’d rather not replay the beginning again

There was some feedback on earlier chapters, and then some for the Patreon version that went up yesterday, which asked for the chance to show more ways in which a PC has been psychologically impacted by what happened to them before the start of the game. It’s something I’ve wanted to lean further into in a similar way to how the game is responsive to the amount of the PC’s physical pain. After all, the game is about a character who has been through something difficult, and is navigating the aftermath - as well as potentially interacting closely with others who have been through difficult things too and are handling that in various ways.

When I was first planning the game, I also knew I wanted to have plenty of chances for hurt/comfort for PCs who want it, and for PCs who don’t want that to be able to reject it or feel ambivalent, and so on. While I’ve been writing beyond what’s currently playable, I’ve been aware that I wanted to include more opportunities for a PC who is not OK to open up (or not) about it to other characters. Although I tweaked some descriptions in the last update, it wasn’t anything major and it was a gap that I knew I wanted to improve, especially as it felt right for some characters to notice and mention if something stressful was going on with the PC.

It’s also the case that in Chapter 7, which I’m writing at the moment, there is some very stressful stuff happening for the PC and I knew I needed a firmer foundation in the mechanics of how a PC’s stress is described and whether NPCs have had a chance to notice or bring up what’s been going on before that point.

Anyway: in the current version starting in Chapter 2, there are now some more specific responses the PC can have to stressors around them; some Chapter 3 stress points and NPC responses; in future chapters, I’ve written further stressors, PC responses, and NPC interactions/responsivity.

Most, though not all, of this text triggers in response to how much physical and mental pressure the PC is under. I’ve gone back and forth about whether, and how, to display this score on the stats page. At the moment, there’s a sentence descriptor under “Health” that gives some information about how the PC is doing; I will probably tweak how this displays, or the way it’s worded, over time.

As ever, this is all subject to plenty of iteration and I’m very happy to consider any feedback of whatever kind - about this or anything else in the game!

(Earlier today I also fixed a couple of errors in the chapter skip file, so there’s that too, though that’s less interesting!)

(This edit puts the public demo version at around 140,000 words.)

Do or will we have the opportunity to engage in a personal “decompression” activity? At some point, I think a lot of people in a situation where they’re continually around the stress of dealing with teenagers wanting to branch out and an environment that’s not quite as safe as assumed will need to go to their room and do something that is just their own thing for a while.

Yes, definitely. There are points where pressure can be reduced in situations like taking some time for recuperation, or chilling out with people they like, and there are some focused relaxation activities that the PC can get up in the later chapters. It’s something where I’ll likely add some things in as I go / once I’m further in the draft and have a sense of the bigger picture pacing-wise.

Honor Bound Fortnightly Progress Report:

It’s been a bit of a hard one this fortnight thanks to getting sick and a number of other tricky things, but I’ve been mostly working on Honor Bound Chapter 7 (with a little bit of Royal Affairs epilogue work) and made great progress yesterday in particular. I was very happy to put up the Chapter 4 Patreon update this week!

As well as working on Chapter 7, I did some polish and updates for earlier chapters, of which the biggest one was adding more chances for the PC to feel more psychological effects of their background and current stressors.

So far, Chapter 7 involves dealing with some very perilous situations, so you can see why I had “include more chances to respond to the PC’s stress levels” on my mind!

Honor Bound fortnight’s wordcount: 13,621
Honor Bound current average playthrough length: 68,824

I hope you are having a better time than the Honor Bound PC is having right now!

I know its almost expected to get sick in winter, but I still wish it doesn’t happen.

Get well soon, and don’t over do it!

I know, winter is a tough time for it! I ended up getting two different colds in the space of two weeks, what a pain. I always have trouble with keeping up my energy in the winter too. Thank you for the well wishes!

Hm that suck. Like sheesh…2 colds in 2 weeks? where are you? In the North Pole?

hey…that give you material! Write a scene where favorite romance get a cold and you get to kiss it and make it better

I’m having a headache, which probably isn’t better than the migraine PC (although I would love to have the stretching instructions they have!) but I misread your post so ridiculously I figured I might let you know in case it might provide some amusement.

First, I read you had hard time getting sick, which… yeah. Then I read you spent some time writing in Polish (instead of polishing the writing), and then that the PC needed to feel some mythological effects. :yum:
