I’m on the same page with you regarding knowledge on Canada. The reason why I chose it was because I like Canada and so does my crush…

is it set during winter or is it just perpetually cold in Canada?

Hinterland is set in Fall.
Good question. I want to focus more on the survival aspects of the game, and the story will be there so the reader does not get bored. Do you know the game The Long Dark? Well, it’s a W.I.P, and the only mode they have at the moment is solo sandbox. The game is slow-paced and very realistic, with no story. You are just thrust into the Canadian wilderness for no reason at all. I actually read an article that said because the Long Dark was so boring, it was a great game.
So, maybe I want to use this game as sort of a ‘survival guide’ because all the methods I talk about/use in the story are ones that actually work. I research survival techniques before writing scenes. But as of now, Hinterland is sandbox.
Taking care of the various needs reminds me of Sims. I can gosub washing scenes, bathroom scenes, etc etc, but then I have to deal with the time problem, which is proving difficult. I’m interested to see how @JimD managed time in his Safe Haven beta. I think I’m going to have to go military time, since time is a variable in Hinterland.
Technically, in the place I am describing in the game, there would be no bears. So, I created a fictional island set in a real place so I could add in whatever I wanted. Purple poisonous mushrooms? You got it. Drinkable fresh water? No problem.
As for the scene being rushed, I got that feel too. I added in more lines for that ‘walking through the woods’ vibe and I’m adding a conversation with Ash.
The bear scene has a black bear in it. Black bears are very aggressive, and they will attack you when they feel you are a threat. I could add in a young cub and you can get a choice to play with it or try to kill it or something and when the bear comes in it tries to attack you.
Interesting idea. One of the goals of the story is to reach Ash’s partner in Fort Smith, and coding too much gives me migraines. But there will be badass scenes that will come out from an action movie. I’m talking Michael Bay-esque type scenes, you have my word.
Glad you liked the pilot.
