Guenevere (WIP)

@thesunfloweramaxon Oh, I forgot to say how much I liked the Alethia Nocturne pictures. That woman’s hair is amazing!

@poison_mara Mordred will have some health issues in childhood that will prevent him from ever becoming much of a fighter, so he won’t be very bulky. We’ll have to wait and see how much of your poison queen agenda will be possible.

@CrayFoPottah Also going to have to wait to see how much Mordred might try to tempt Guen if he thinks she’s too firmly in Arthur’s camp. I honestly don’t know yet; it’s a long way off, and there’s a lot of story to write between now and then. Mordred will respect a powerful Guen, whatever form that power might take.

@poison_mara Yes, I suppose it’s certainly possible that Mordred would still try and influence Guen no matter how she was like for those reasons…

@jeantown I understand, I mean there’s still a long way to go before Mordred even actually enters the story, I’m just a tiny bit confused as to what I should do to get his attention… If you openly show your dislike to Arthur and his allies, you’d be of no use to him, but if you’re close to them, even if maybe only for the sake of manipulating them, he’d think you’re on their side. :-??

@Jeantown you mentioned that Morgana will be extremely angry at Arthur for the conceptiion of Mordred, and that Guen will have to make some decissions, but will it be possible to talk with both of them and sort the situation? Make them both understand that none of them wanted it and they are all victims here?
My Guen loves Arthur and feel very strong feeling of friendship to Morgana so she would want to get the two people she love to reconcile.

@CrayFoPottah Good point! It might make more sense once you find out exactly what Mordred’s magic powers are. But really, for now, the answer is just that I’m not sure yet, mainly because I don’t know how all of the options for Guen’s actions, feelings, and relationships may have played out by then. I guess you and I both are going to have to wait and see!

@Ponku Yes, absolutely, I want Guen to be able to help reconcile Arthur and Morgana. (Alternatively, Mara’s Guen may use the opportunity to drive them further apart.) There will be some moments where Guen has to choose between Arthur and Morgana, but ultimately, she can also work toward improving their relationship – at least, that’s what I want!

@jeantown - It was ages ago when I asked you about Elaine and her part in the story and I wanted to say thank you for answering my question! I didn’t even know there were two renditions of her so I suppose I should start looking more into the legend.

Also, I tried watching ‘Merlin’ and I stopped right after Arthur introduced himself by saying “I’m the King’s son!” (and then he threw Merlin into a dungeon because he stopped him from using someone as target practice.) I’ve grown so use to your Arthur that it was kind of surprising to me especially since I thought he was Lance at first. Have you seen the show?

@Princess Hello again! The more I plan ahead, the more I seem to be combining characters… I think Pelles and Pellinore might be next. Anyway, I can’t wait to write Elaine and see what she’s really like.

I watched Merlin up to somewhere around the end of the second season. I thought it was a mixed bag: some good things, some things that could have been better, some things I could have done without. Ultimately I found it frustrating because I really love spellcaster/sword-wielder teams, and all I wanted was for Arthur to find out about Merlin’s magic abilities, agree to help hide them, and then the two of them become an awesome side-by-side fighting team where they both understand and depend on each other’s strengths. When I figured out that was never going to happen, I kinda lost interest. But hey, it got a lot of people interested in Arthurian stuff for the first time, so that’s a good thing.

Long time lurker first time poster.
I enjoy the story so far…so jeantown keep up the great work.
I never liked alignments in games afterall everyone
has their own view on what is evil or good.
I can wait to see how the rest of the story shape ups.

I liked Merlin, but the show had some problems.

For one thing, how could Uthur wage a successful genocide against magic folk when it took Merlin saving his life every week against a singular angry magician?

And Morgana, going from bleeding heart, to well intentioned extremist? Okay sure, makes perfect sense. Morgana going from well intentioned extremist to card carrying bad guy who mourns that railroads aren’t going to be invented for several centuries so she will never get to tie Guinevere to the railroad tracks? Eh.

@JanusVonDul Thanks for reading and for posting! Glad you like the lack of “alignment.” I’m trying hard to leave all of Guen’s choices open to interpretation within the game (for example, she’ll be able to make a certain bid for power at the end of part 2, but her motivations and intentions can vary). Some actions may seem “evil” at face value, but they can have good results or be interpreted in different ways.

@ststword Agree all around, especially with the unnecessary two-dimensionality of Morgana’s character. That was another thing that made me lose interest.

Gosh I really love it, it’s interesting, and definitely does a good job at making you feel guilty for straying from Arthur. But Lancelot is such a fun character all the same… it makes me feel so bad when I find his wing-manning more attractive than the suggested actions that Arthur takes LOL

But yeah, really good so far, I like it a lot.

It’s quite difficult to regard choices as purely good or bad - my Guen for example likes Lance as a friend and wishes to get to know him, but is worried regarding her apparent physical attractions towards him since she has become quite fond of Arthur, even though he occasionally does things which irritate her.

@Bootsykk Thank you! I’m trying to carry that tension forward in a slightly different way in part 2. I look forward to hearing what you think of it!

@derekmetaltron That’s good to hear (regarding good/bad choices). The end of part 2 will give some answers about the physical attraction issue, so Guen can make some more informed choices about how to deal with Lancelot. And Arthur will do a few things which I hope some people will find irritating and some people will find cute.

Jeantown I really like how you wrote black magic
and light magic. Unlike so many that places black
magic as evil and corrupt. You just make it more into
combat/offensive type. Book 2 sounds very interesting.
Keep it up and may your writting go block free!

While on the subject of magic, there was a quote in Fire Emblem that I still find intriguing. “Light Magic stems from Faith. Dark Magic stems from Knowledge.” Dark Magic isn’t inherently evil, it’s just open to alot more abuse than Light Magic.

@Taiho That applies pretty well to Guenevere, especially since light magic tends to be associated with the story’s pagan goddess-religion, and dark magic tends to be associated with scholarly research and study.

Wasn’t it more a case of magic coming from the old pagan gods? In the true story anyways, although I don’t think there was any ‘light magic’, in that one. In fact I quite like that traditional reseprentation of Morgana as being wed to old gods beyond mercy and humanity. Power coming at a price and all that.

@jeantown “Guen does not develop carrot-throwing powers.” How can you decide to crush all my dreams just like this? :stuck_out_tongue: Oh well, I will have to make Guen keep in case she encounters the Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog.

@MutonElite Which one is the true story? serious question… I’m always curious to know which one people think is the “real” version, and why.

@Tehani I hope you can forgive me. Keeping the carrot is a wise move. You never know when you might need a carrot.

@jeantown Well, I would say that which keeps closest to the original epos. If you think about it, Camelot was never a shining city with huge lofty towers, more likely to just have been a hunk of stone, and magic was more likely curses and know how than fireballs. And I do like that old gods aspect of the untamed kelts…celts? I think my introduction to the Arthurian legend was an old semi-anime Japanese production, called simply King Arthur. More traditional knights and castles in that one, but still nice. And I do like it when Merlin is kept in mystery and a bit of seclusion, more ancient forest sage/spirit than comic release or Gandalf. *hint hint* :stuck_out_tongue:

Also, that carrot, ahrm, this might be a tad distasteful but, is Guen gonna “befriend” herself? :stuck_out_tongue: Or Morgana perhaps. No need to answer that one.

@MutonElite One of the really fun and interesting things about Arthuriana is that it’s all fanfiction and no canon. There are no original epos! (Or rather, if there were, they’ve been lost, and we don’t know what was in them.)

There’s the wild-and-crazy early Celtic stuff, which is pretty different from what most people think of as “standard” (no Lancelot, for example, and it’s from before there really was a concept of knighthood), and then there’s the later medieval stuff, written hundreds of years after any real Arthur might have lived, and inserting their own agendas and values, like chivalry – but those versions are where most people’s ideas of the story come from, so for a lot of people, those are the “real” versions.

I can’t claim to have read every single thing, but I don’t remember running into the concept of Morgana being wedded to old Celtic gods in any of the medieval versions I’ve read. (I don’t think that shows up in any of the early Celtic stories, but someone can correct me if I’m wrong.) I think your anime, like every version of the story there is, may have been adding some of its own really interesting and cool concepts. And now I want to see that anime!

As for how Guen might use the carrot “off screen,” I leave that to your interpretation.
