@jeantown I guess you COULD make Arthur the male protaganist instead, and have the story told from his point of view. Then it could be an official CoG game. But…that would be way too much work. ^_^;
@jeantown You said Guen could drive Arthur and Lancelot apart. Is there any chance Guen could convince Lance to attempt a coup d’état or even join Mordred? Maybe she could say that Britain needs a strong leader, that strong leader being either Lance or Mordred. Since that’s the kind of thing Lancelot and Arthur seem to disagree on most, it might be enough to convince Lancelot to overthrow Arthur.
@poison_mara Don’t apologize for being smart. I like learning about history! I don’t mind the walls of text.
@Mirabella you are too kind :">. And about Lancelot I believe he would never attack Arthur to take realm he is too coward to that. He is coward to recognize his feelings, too coward to run away and left Guen, too cowarđ too did the chivalry thing and confess to hippie.
My Guen would play the feeble femme in danger strategy to make him feel guilty. Like Arthur is a bad husband and want rid of me, he suspects about us what can I do? Of course, Arthur would heard a different story about the violent overhungry Barbie whispering to barons.
I just decided no sex with Barbie would make him easier to manipulate :-?
@Jeantown, nearly every game on the site is completely customizable as far as character, so I for one, don’t actually mind the occasional set character game.
@OtherGrimm Oh my goodness… that would just be a whole other game…
and now that I’ve written Guenevere to have such a range of possible personalities, I don’t think I could ever write her as a “fixed” character. I think my brain would rebel! But I’d love it if someone else were to write a King Arthur game with Arthur as the protagonist. There’s a ton of potential there!
@Mirabella Arthur and Lancelot can end up on opposing sides (sort of), and that’s exactly what Mordred wants to happen, but I don’t think Lancelot will ever be willing to ally with Mordred once he finds out what Mordred’s been up to. I do expect there to be an ending where Arthur is dead and Guen can live happily ever after with Lancelot, but within the parameters of the main plot, Lancelot is unlikely ever to forgive or trust Mordred. And, @poison_mara, I don’t know if it’s cowardice – maybe more a desire for freedom – but Lancelot doesn’t think of himself as king material, so he wouldn’t make that kind of bid for power on his own. But if Guen wants to stay queen and have him by her side, that will be possible.
@Doctor Thanks! I think there’s lots of room for both. And I hope I’ve created a very customizable set character.
@Doctor Well, the only thing that is set is the gender, every other thing is open to player’s imagination.
Alas, the bizarro Broadsides-version of the game with Manevere, Queen Arthette, Lancelass, and Morgan will remain uncoded.
And: post #1200? @jeantown, you’ve got an awesome fanbase.
@Ponku, Gender and name- two of the three things that people get most upset with not having control over in CoG… Not that anyone has ever had to choose those in real life
@Doctor Well, actually in my country you could change easily your name at gender. Go register change men to women or woman to man sadly no neutral option yet. Also change of gender cirugy is free if you show a psycologic necessity of it.
@Havenstone I am honestly amazed and humbled and a little nervous because my fans have stuck with me even though I’m not going to post part 2 until the entire draft is finished. I said right from the beginning that it would take me a year to write part 2. That’s an eternity in internet time… but people have consistently stuck with me and cheered me on, both here and on tumblr. It’s kept me working hard!
And re: protagonist gender, I have so much internal conflict on that issue. On the one hand, I get really frustrated with the vast majority of video game protagonists being stubbly white men – I have nothing against stubbly white men, but there are just so many people in the world who aren’t stubbly white men, and playing the same stubbly white man again and again just gets boring. So I absolutely support being able to choose protagonist gender (and also race, and also quantity of facial hair), and I understand why being able to choose protagonist gender is so important to so many people. It should be. On the other hand, I hope I’m demonstrating with Guenevere that a person’s identity is so much more than gender. Guen is genderlocked, but she can have (I hope) a broad range of different personalities and goals. Gender is inescapably (for now, at least) part of who we are, but it doesn’t have to be the primary determiner of who we are.
Well, like you I sympathize with CoG’s policy on gender choice – and like you (and them!) I also think there’s more than one way to thoughtfully and constructively engage with issues of gender and identity in games. And you’re clearly doing that with Guenevere, even without Choice of Stubble. So keep on doing what feels right to you.
@jeantown, It’s all right to have a female only MC.
It’s true that most games allow you to choose the gender, but there’s also Sabres of Infinity which is better then most of those games although the MC there is always male. It’s time to create an equally awesome game with an always female MC and I think you’re on the right way to do it. :)>-
@Havenstone, maybe…
@Marajade, yes, we can do that here in good ol’ 'Merica also. I tend to be a old fashioned type if dude where we take what we get and take pride in it.
@jeantown Don’t worry about gender issues, your game is already perfect as it is
I wouldn’t have it any other way!
Also, I’ve come to inform you of another typo, just in case you haven’t fixed it yet in the updated version
It’s in the war council scene after Arthur addresses the “lords and ladies of Camelot,” explaining that Morgana’s already questioned the assassin and will give the full report. The narration says, “His sits and gestures toward Morgana.” Should be “He sits” instead.
@jeantown omg that description that you just said is amazing, I can’t wait for this game to be completed, so many possibilities i love it! =D>
Love the game still
