Guenevere (WIP)

@Taiho You understand my Morgana so well. It wouldn’t take much for public perception to interpret her as a villain, depending on how people feel about Arthur. If he’s popular, her willingness to criticize him may not be taken well by his supporters. Plus, people are suspicious of dark magic, and she makes no attempt to hide her abilities there. So even though she is definitely not evil, plenty of people may think she is by the end of the story.

@poison_mara Someday I have to learn more about the Spanish versions. Every time you talk about them, they sound really interesting.

Is there a way for Guen to benefit from being open about her dark magic the same way Morgana is? Even though the common people are suspicious of Morgana, her enemies fear her, which someone like mara would probably be quite happy with. On the other hand, if Guen is more concerned with being adored by her people than feared by her enemies, she wouldn’t want that. Is it possible for her to openly practice dark magic and still be loved by the people? Maybe once she’s established a reputation as a good queen, people will be more willing to trust her after the secret comes out. And if my Guen hides the fact that she practices dark magic, would Morgana consider her cowardly or be understanding?

@Mirabella My Guen is quite open about her dark magic use in the battle and people adore her. If people see her queen is strong and caring with the king smile etc, they would trust her and love the sorcerer Queen that helps them. Morgana is not charismatic don’t hug commoners etc… She is grumpy and her harsh shy attitude is seen as a sly and dangerous.

The monarch more admired in Spain history was a woman, Isabel I the woman who defeated Arabs in Spain, the woman who sold all her jewelry to send Columbus travel who ended with the American discovery. She fought in battles not in the first line, but she was there. She hadnt been feared or hatred for being a strong woman in XV. She was charismatic, ate with soldiers’ visit widows and put her own doctors to cure soldiers. Instead, her daughter Juana was hated and treated as mad basically because being similar to morgana but more depressed. She was jailed in an abbey and feared as a possessed woman.

@poison_mara Can you just type up everything you know about the history of Spain and send it to me? :stuck_out_tongue: I’m kidding. I’m a huge history buff, though, so I find all that stuff way cool.

You’re right, I didn’t consider the effect that Guen’s other traits (charisma, etc.) would have on her reputation. Morgana’s grumpiness certainly doesn’t help win admirers. But I do know that some people can be completely unreasonable when they find out about something they don’t like in an otherwise awesome person. I’ve known people that were best friends with someone, but then found out they belonged to the opposite political party or a different religion, and then they refused to talk to that person. So yeah, personality and friendliness plays a huge part in how people see Guen, but some people just can’t get past an unreasonable stigma or prejudice. It’s especially true in a medieval setting where most people are uneducated, superstitious, and never travel beyond their hometown. That said, it’ll be interesting to see how Guen’s reputation changes over the course of the series.

Oh, sorry I’m just studying a history mayor right now so I tend to put a wall of text about it :frowning: And about people opposing my Guen would have strange accidents like daggers in their heart hanging or total poisoning parties. Or just being accused of treason .

@Mirabella and @poison_mara If people see Guen using her magic for the benefit of the kingdom, they’ll be reasonably accepting. Morgana is tolerated because everybody knows she’s using her magic to help Arthur win battles. It’s her personality that could someday make people think she was the bad guy all along. If Guen is popular and perceived as a good queen, she should be fine, though the dark magic could add a certain mystery to public perception. On the other hand, she might choose to be discreet, just in case. Morgana wouldn’t judge her too harshly for that. She can understand that Guen might not want to deal with people’s misconceptions.

I love this game. So much. I played through once and…

You’re an excellent writer. And I felt like I was there and – I always love takes on various mythologies and fairytales, and the Arthurian legends are definitely one of the best.

At the end of my playthrough, I had about equal trust with Arthur, Morgana, and Lancelot - my character had feelings for all three of them, and I honestly LIKED all three of them. However, being the good queen she was, she fully planned to stay loyal to Arthur.

I can’t wait for the next book!

@Kunabee I’m so glad you liked it! Comments like yours keep me writing obsessively. Part 2 is now just a little more than halfway done. I look forward to hearing what you think of it!

@jeantown Allow me to continue posting more of such comments to make you write even more obsessively :3 I just tried playing a full-on aloof, stubborn, b****y Guen the other day, and I stumbled upon a lot of scenes for the first time, which are all very good, and also enjoyable to read, because the whole time I was playing I was laughing like a madman, exclaiming stuffs like, “Oh my God, I’m such a b****!” in amusement, knowing full well that my real Guen would never do those things xD See, this is another reason why I absolutely adore this game. There are so many scenes to discover with each different choice you make, and that makes for an amazing replayability

Among the newly-discovered scenes are the Mordred dream sequences. I’ve seen you guys talking about it on the thread before though I didn’t really understand at that time :stuck_out_tongue: They’re both great. I was all entranced by the way Mordred was described xD Is it normal that he and the dreams in general turn me on…? :’) Either way, I can’t wait to actually meet him. I can tell the whole ordeal will be very interesting. Even though my real Guen would still try and be a good queen, I’ll still separately play out of character to get Mordred because the mere thought of it is already very exciting, and intriguing! Will there be more Mordred dreams like this in the next parts as well?

Thanks, and as always; best of luck on your writing! I’ll be sticking around, (im)patiently waiting for more of your work of awesome.

@CrayFoPottah It’s amazing how obsessive a few positive posts can make me. I’m working like crazy on scene 8 and kind of scaring myself with how complicated I accidentally made it. Anyway, I’m very glad you had fun with your alternate universe Guen, and glad you liked the Mordred appearances. He is certainly supposed to be sexy evil, and he’s a big contrast to the other main characters. There hasn’t been a good place to put a Mordred dream in part 2 so far, but I think I might be able to sneak one in soon, in a way that will fit with the progression of events. His evil master plan for world domination is already getting started in part 2, and he hasn’t even been born yet!

I love this game so much. I’ve made a lesbian Guen several times because I feel like it’s the most tragic. Not only is she forced to marry a man, but she’s being pressured on several fronts to produce a child for him. I wish there was, at some point, a choice where Guen could beg Morgana perhaps if there was any magic to have his child without actually having sex with him since it frightens her so much.

Oh, Mordred is so sexy and awesome! I am wondering @jeantown if i could make barbie, hippie and Morgana start haye and being jealous of the others. My guen could fake being nice but then introduce insidious whispers in their minds . I could imagine Barbie killing hippie in a distant future >:-)

@snappingcookies My train of thinking except I make my Guen out to be loving of Arthur as a queen, but loving Morgana as a woman. Head and heart divided sort of thing.
Interesting scenario though.

@poison_mara
Barbie = Lancalot because he’s concerned about his looks? Shouldn’t it be more Ken? Ken and Hippie, Barbie and Hippie. Eh, both are good. Gonna assume Arthur is the hippie. At this age, I could image him putting flowers in his hair, not the beefy warrior king he usually is in fiction.

@snappingcookies Thank you! I’ve wrestled back and forth with ways for a lesbian or asexual Guen to tell Arthur outright that she doesn’t want to have sex with him. I think I may have figured it out as I was falling asleep last night, so we’ll see if I can build that in. (Of course, Guen won’t have to tell him if she doesn’t want to.) Sadly I’ve had to decide that, for this story, magical conception won’t be an option – it just doesn’t quite fit with how I constructed the main plot and the world – but I hope that if I make it possible for Guen to talk with Arthur about the situation, they can work something out. And there’s no harm in having her ask Morgana, even if the answer is no, so maybe I can throw that in, too, since it would add to that sense of tragedy you’re talking about.

@poison_mara I had thought about at least making it possible for Guen to “break up” Arthur and Lancelot slowly over time. I don’t know if you’ve ever gotten the option where, if Guen doesn’t kill Hrothulf, Lancelot offers to do it, and if Guen says yes, Arthur stops him, and then Arthur and Lancelot have an argument later. When I wrote that part, I thought maybe it could be the beginning of Guen turning them against each other. In order to make it work well, though, I think I’ll have to wait until I’ve written the whole thing, and then go back and add some moments like that, so it’s all consistent and builds up to a specific point. That might go on the list of “value-added” items for the final, commercial version.

@Taiho I love that head/heart tension! That’s beautiful! As the game progresses, you may feel like I’m torturing you, since Guen has to choose between Arthur and Morgana at a couple of points, but I hope that will just add to the sense of struggle and make the story more interesting for you.

@Taiho Barbie is Lancelot
1- Blonde long hair perfume, colorful clothes… In medieval…
Spain and french version describe it as a beautiful ut girly looking youngster
2- Sexual life he has my models than Barbie, lol. In Spain we have an old poem than appears in the Quijote about the number of women he cheat. Don Juan said I want to have as gold in my purses as women laid with Lancelot.
3- For me he is brain dead and guilty of treason

@jeantown Yeah my thinking was that Guen would ask for it because she’s desperate to either give Arthur the heir he wanted or that she wanted without having sex, even if she knew it was possible or not. And I was also thinking why I couldn’t have Guen just tell Arthur that she didn’t want to have sex with him, either because she’s not attracted to men or anyone at all, so he would at least know instead of thinking she didn’t like him. I look forward to that!

@jeantown Ooh, sexy evil… Totally my kind of (fictional) guy! Maybe when I’m playing to get Mordred I’ll just play a villainous, manipulative queen instead… It sounds a lot more fun than the Guen who acts annoying for the sake of being annoying xD Dream or no dream, we’ll still meet him and get the choice to join his side, won’t we?

And yeah, that thing about him already shaping out his plan before he was even born into the physical world kind of creeped me out a little bit, but with that piece of information, I ended up making headcanons in my head (did i just make a [lame] pun?) involuntarily… stuffs like the scene in which the now-physically-alive Mordred asks Guen to join him… and my captivated Guen mentions (in awe and adoration) him already reaching out to her even before his own birth… and he replies with something like “I was always there” and stuff and now I just realized how chessy this is and I’m sorry, I have no one to blame but my own delusional, cheesy mind.

Aaanyways… I’m glad to hear that scene 8 is progressing  Try and not work yourself out, though, we’ll still need (more like demand) that brain to create more awesomeness after part 2 is done with. :stuck_out_tongue:

@jeantown I’ve played your game so much ^-^ though I can never be mean to Arthur, I have trouble even wanting to cheat on him. He’s just so sweet.

As for the whole otome thing everyone is talking about, yes, romance in games is very…well dull most of the time. Once you get to the end that’s it. IE sex or marriage. And I’m very glad you’ll be making the say no to sex thing -not- have a negative effect, as most games don’t do that. Heck, some even make it so that the relationship stops progressing when that happens (IE Mass Effect with Tali), which is even worse.

I like the feel of romance in your games because it feels fleshed out. Your characters aren’t just going through the motions, it feels truly intimate and personal.

I’m currently coding (very slowly and not up ^-^) a game that takes inspiration from Supernatural and I hope to be able to make my MC’s relationships (both friendly and otherwise) as well as you’ve made your own.

Will there be an option to play as a male?

@snappingcookies I’m working on the Arthur conversation right now. I think it’s going to work and not be too complicated (overcomplication was always the problem before). Arthur and Guen should be able to talk about the heir issue, and she should be able to reassure him that it’s not that there’s anything wrong with him. It won’t appear in the game until I update with part 2 (because code update issues), but it will be there someday, and I hope you like it!

@CrayFoPottah Yes, you will absolutely be able to romance Mordred even if you don’t get the dreams. In fact, the dreams only happen if Guen isn’t doing what Mordred wants (gaining power by making people like her). And I’m sure there’s going to be a certain amount of cheesiness somewhere… it’s a (sort of) romance game, after all. But I hope you’ll have fun playing a manipulative Guen. She doesn’t have much villainous influence on things in part 1, but she’ll get there.

@FoxalypticWorld Yay! I’m so glad you like it. I never knew that you have to have sex with Tali to keep the romance going in ME. That doesn’t make a ton of sense, considering that it makes her sick. It does seem like we’re brainwashed by media to think that sex is the ultimate goal and high point of any relationship, and after it happens, there’s no more story to tell. I’m trying to construct the Guenevere game so that, while sex matters and does make a difference, there’s always a story to tell no matter how much sex does or doesn’t happen. And I have been hoping all along that more people would write games with nuanced relationships that aren’t just vending machines! I can’t wait to play your game!

@Crigley13 I thought about that a lot, and had to come to the conclusion that a male Guenevere just won’t work for this game. I wrote a blog post all about it. But this is probably the last time I’ll write a game with a genderlocked protagonist.
