Guenevere (WIP)

Hurrah, Everyone hails our amazing writer!

I’m very late to this discussion, but I just finished what you have posted thus far, and it was one of the best interactive fiction experiences I’ve ever had. I adore this story, and I’m waiting eagerly for what will hopefully be every installment after this.

One of the strengths of this I’d say is that Romance is considered character development not just a sub-plot. It actually matters and that’s really what I’m looking for in CoG, more intimate moments between characters. Sighing as you rest your head on their shoulders, a simple caress of the cheek.

That’s what I want, words and actions that show they care for each other. And yes, Guenevere has the most potential I’d say.

That said, the way a character can be romantic also changes between characters. I’d be interesting to explore that in the following stories.

I wonder if Morgana will just pin Guen up against a wall and forceabily kiss her? Guen tries to resist but she knows she can’t…

*Shakes head.*

Anyway, eagerly awaiting more.

@Taiho exactly! I love when you can feel that your character is in relationship, not just that you doing your ā€œmain questā€ and once an hour you come to your love interest, have a few banters and go back to other stuff. You worded perfectly what i also feel about this game, simple moments between people in a relationship are very important and fun to read in a game.

@Taiho You have described the thing I most hate in all Japanese Otome games, The rape scene, because being forced against your will and being sexual harassed is so funny!. I really don’t know why people consider it romantic. When I suffered an attempt I assured you I didn’t find it romantic at all. So please @jeantown don’t include something like that or at least put it in a clear choice do you want being sexual harassed against your will choice.

I’m sure @Jeantown won’t include any forced scenes, she told us much in one of her tumblr post if i remember correctly, so i don’t worry about that.

@Ponku I hope so, or at least she let me kill the guy girl monster that try that.

@poison_mara No no, I get what you’re saying but I’d picture it that Guen and Morgana have gotten to know each other and maybe Guen flirts abit too much with Morgana which results in her pinning her against a wall. Morgana would then ask if Guen actually meant any of that and while Guen is flustered, Morgana takes her lips.

Consensual, totally consensual. But I’d just like the idea that Morgana could be abit rough if Guen teases her about her affections.

I just picture Morgana being rough, maybe not able to express her affection through words, so she has to use action instead.

I don’t know, that might not blend into her character and I’ve been trying to meld her with the ā€œCold but Emotionalā€ trope.

But again, this feeds into the very good writing. While you’re with King Arthur at the camp, you could either compliment him or simply lay your head on his shoulder, spoken and physical action. That’s what I want to see more of, small, physical actions that could mean more than words.

But yes… I can see how you could see it that way. I don’t like it either.

Your mouth says no, but everything says yes?

*Sigh.*

I should take up politics…

Anyway, main point is physical displays of intimacy would be useful to develop characters.

I’ll show myself out.

@Taiho, Well that’s what i thought you meant earlier, more like ā€œactions rather than wordsā€ and Morgana’s advance more like question rather than forcing herself, but it sounded a little like nonconsensual so others might have interpreted it that way.

But while i see Morgana as not good with words, i don’t associate it with being rough. I don’t want her to be rough :stuck_out_tongue: Or maybe i understand that word differently… there are always possibilites of missunderstanding when english isn’t your first language

But don’t show yourself out! Disscussion is always good, even if you worded yourself different than what you meant, without disscusing it you’ll never learn better ways to express what you wanted  I always worry that what i write or say sounds stupid or different than what i wanted to say, but i try that it won’t stop me from wording myslef anyway.

@Taiho Ahhh, I understand rude shows of affection! Yeah, that could work for sudmissives guens. But my Guen is dominant herself so if someone tries to launch over my character Her reaction would be a dagger in her his throat and A shout warning Never without my permission. Then, if she really is in love or have sex is useful for her she could continue. But always with my own permission, my character is not somebody’s sexual pet to throw over!
Edit also @Taiho Dont go away, please. I was no angry and this is an on topic discussion. Not go awayy :((

@Pepper well, that would be unconsensuall too…

Anyway i recommend http://newarcana.tumblr.com/ if you want to learn more about the course of the game (and also about @jeantowns other great works

@poison_mara Thanks; I needed that! :slight_smile:

@TheMeerkat Thank you and I’m so glad you liked it! I need those kinds of comments to keep me going as I write part 2.

@Taiho You understand so well what I’m trying to do! It means so, so much to me to have someone get it and appreciate it. I don’t want just a simple ā€œromance on/offā€ flag. I want readers to feel like they can have a whole range of different kinds of relationships with the characters, from something totally platonic to a comfortable friendship with benefits to an asexual chivalric romance, to active dislike and/or manipulation. And I love coming up with little details that show those relationships, so I hope you’ll see more of those as the relationships are more established in part 2, and let me know if you have any ideas for things like that.

The NPCs are quite different in personality, and it shows in the relationships. Morgana is not an especially romantic person, but she’ll be fiercely loyal, and, as you’re suggesting, she has a lot of passion under her cynical exterior. I hope you like the way a physical relationship with her can play out, since she will indeed let a Guen she trusts see her more emotional, reckless side. I think you understand her very well!

Just for comparison, Lancelot is much more of a romantic, and he’ll be perfectly happy, even relieved, to have a non-sexual relationship with Guen if he can just be honest with her about how he feels. (That’s the old ā€œcourtly loveā€ model, after all.) In fact, now that I’ve written the first Lancelot sex scene, I can report that he’s more resistant to sex than I thought he’d be. That said, he and Guen can also have a rather epic sexual relationship if he trusts her and truly believes that’s what she wants.

Arthur is the only character who will always unconditionally have sex with Guen, even if he doesn’t like her, because he feels it’s his duty to produce an heir. The other two will say no for all kinds of reasons.

I am trying hard not to avoid non-consensual situations. In all of the sex scenes, I try to make it clear that Guen is choosing to have sex, and most of the time in part 2 I give her one or two chances to say ā€œno, wait; I don’t actually want to do this.ā€ Most importantly, saying she doesn’t want sex does not damage the relationship in any way. I’m very well aware that there are fourteen-year-olds playing this game, and I want to show them that it is possible to say ā€œI don’t want sex right nowā€ and still have a fulfilling relationship.

So if anyone ever does pin Guen against a wall (wait and see), she will, as @poison_mara suggests, be able to make it very clear that that’s not what she wants – and her wishes will be respected. And if she does want to be pinned against a wall, then she can make that clear, too.

OH GREAT @jeantown that sounds excellent!. That would be new in an Otome game. The possibility of saying hey, go touch your mother! I’m not your sex slave!" Or throw yourself against a wall to conquest! that sounds amazing

@jeantown Congrats on your progress! Will the updates on part 1 go live when part 2 is uploaded, or before? And btw, will you only submit the game to CoG after you’ve completed all seven parts or…?

On a different note, I spotted a typo (I can’t believe I just found it now, I’ve played this game like fifty times already), I don’t know if you’ve fixed it or not but it’s in the scene in Merlin’s tower when Guen asks Arthur why he doesn’t just ask Merlin to give him some fae powder. Arthur replies with, ā€œThere are only three people in this kingdom who conistently refuse to do what I tell them.ā€ ā€œConistentlyā€ should be ā€œconsistentlyā€

I’ll never get bored of playing this game over and over until part 2 comes along :3 If I spot more errors in my future plays, I’ll let you know! And good luck on finishing part 2! ;D

@poison_mara Glad you approve! I would love for more people to write romance games where the relationships have a lot of variation, rather than just on/off. I want to play those games!

@CrayfoPottah Thanks, and thanks for spotting the typo! Please do let me know if you find more, or any little inconsistencies in wording or formatting. I never did run spellcheck – have to remember to do that before I release part 2. I think, at this point, I’m just going to wait to post the part 1 updates when I post part 2. I’ve made some little changes to part 1 that could cause bugs or confusion if the part 2 files aren’t there.

I think, after part 2 is done, I’ll at least check in with the CoG folks and make sure there’s no reason I can’t ultimately submit it as a Hosted Game. For a while I thought about trying to release it commercially after part 3, but I’ve changed my mind and I’m going to stick to my dream of having a super-cohesive, truly epic, and very polished game series to publish all at once – years from now! I want to do it my way and write something I love, with no compromises. So thank your for the encouragement, and I look forward to hearing what you think of the next part!

Wow, that was an inspiring ending for a post! I root for you! :-bd

And it is refreshing to read snippets of the different characters’ personality as you develop the story. I was surprised by Morgana’s hidden passion and I had my pervert laugh on while reading: ā€œfirst Lancelot sex scene, I can report that he’s more resistant to sex than I thought he’d beā€. Yes, it couldn’t have gone unnoticed and yes, I will eagerly read part 2.

Oh my yikes, I was just looking back over the previous posts and I realized I wrote ā€œI am trying hard not to avoid non-consensualā€ when (I hope it was obvious) I meant the opposite. ā€œI am trying hard not to include non-conā€ apparently got mashed with ā€œI am trying hard to avoid non-con.ā€ sorry for any confusion!

But @Tehani, glad you liked the notes on the characters!

I’m gonna go back to lurking but before I do, I think I should post stats of my playthrough.
