As one might surmise from her reputation, my Guenevere is very well-educated, possessed of a sharp intellect, prim, and proper. She is very ambitious, since she approached the marriage with a calculating attitude, tempered by her also feeling dutiful for the sake of keeping her father and Cornwall safe. By the end of the chapter, she seems to have settled into a balance between the two aspects of herself, since she still intends to gain as much power as possible, but for the sake of helping the kingdom.
As mentioned before, she is aromantic and asexual though she acquiesces to Arthur, and only Arthur, in the marital bed out of duty as queen and wife. Arthur’s first time was also her first. Her thoughts about it every time are to go along with it for the sake of duty and get it over with. She does not derive pleasure from it, though she at least has the discretion to lie to Arthur about it being fantastic. My Guenevere is a rather goal-oriented, duty-focused sort. I thinks she is rather honest with herself about her heart having no place for romantic love. That being said, she does like Arthur and feels she will grow very fond of him in time, even though she will probably never love him.
There is the matter of Arthur’s vision. My Guenevere is too cynical and realistic to believe it could come to pass, though she does have a certain wistfulness in regretting that it cannot ever be realized. As such, while she will not be actively working towards it, neither will she be actively undermining it. She will go along with it when possible and work around it if she feels the need, such as when she had Hrothulf killed to make his people back off. Her ultimate goal is to make Britain as strong as possible, to become a queen respected for her responsible leadership.
My Guenevere is not unkind towards Lancelot, though she is trying to keep a certain distance, since she sensed his inappropriate feelings. Her thought when she detected the strange magic at work on her and Lancelot was literally, “Oh, no…”. She avoided talking about it with Lancelot, though she did confide in Morgana about it, and that it was strange since she is not attracted to Lancelot. When Lancelot indirectly broached the subject, she finally told him that she fully intends to be faithful to Arthur, and though she did not outright reject his pledge of devotion, her telling him that he may someday encounter another woman more worth of such was her subtle means of telling him that he needed to move on in time.
As one can expect, given her excellence in dark magic, she is very close to Morgana. She genuinely wants to be Morgana’s friend, though there is also the motivation of Morgana being a powerful ally.
Regarding the Mayday children being killed, I think I know my Guenevere well enough to predict that she will initially waver about killing innocent newborn children, but as always, she will remind herself of her duty as queen, and a queen must place the good of the kingdom over that of the few. She will regret only the necessity, seeing to the deed with a heavy heart, doing what she can for the families afterwards.
