@blackrising: Real Men are out of fashion. Now it’s all pretty boys who get the girls.
Real men that phrase is full of machism X( . It’s so real a pretty boy and A beard one. It´s question of what one prefer. My best friend is gay and prefer bear man lol to hug and warm, he is all contrary. For me it’s physically unpleasant but i don’t insult them called girly or unreal like they do with emo androgynous boys, It’s no fair.
Also to make this more topic, Lancelot or Barbie was always a young angelical boy , In spain that fact and being french, has been a fact to demonize him more than Guen. For us in our versions, Guen Ginebra is a poor girl that was seduced and drunken by the traitorous Lancelot . Not only that many spain satiric romances (our medieval poems) Put him like too girly with Arthur.
@MaraJade
I get what you mean (and agree that perpetuing - often harmful - gender stereotypes is a bad idea), but I don’t think Ramidel was meaning any harm. As far as androgynous men go, I actually preferred them as well when I was younger (and still thought of myself as mostly straight), but now I find myself vastly preferring big, strong, (moderately) hairy men…which is funny, because I’m more into girls than guys and it’s really weird to swing between liking slim, soft girls and big, strong men every other day or so.
I remember the first time I really came in contact with the Arthurian legend was when I read “The Mists of Avalon” and literally the only thing I remember from that book is that there was a threesome between Arthur, Lancelot and Guen at some point. Not that hard to imagine, considering how close Lancelot and Arthur are.
Figured I’d pop in here for my first post to the forums. I’ve been lurking the forums for well over a year, but never joined for some reason.
Anyway, I’d just like to say that despite my usual distaste for the romance genre (the only romance related stories I’d liked previously were Clannad and Katawa Shoujo), I can’t help but absolutely adore this game, although I’m really struggling to decide who my favourite character is. It takes a special kind of author to make me enjoy a story that incorporates themes I would otherwise have no interest in, as I was never one for Arthurian legend either. I think over replayed this game, actually. I could probably quote large sections of it by now.
And to stick to the topic at hand; I’ve always preferred the adorkable characters, which is probably why I consider Alistair from DA one of my favourite video game characters. I’ve never been one for those overly handsome or pretty men. I do like stubble though. Full on beards is never a thing I’d go for.
Some ppl look good with beards, some look better shaved
I gave up trying to determine what i prefer a long time ago; i see a person and then i know if i find their look sexy or not, and sometimes that can be entirely different looking ppl that i suprise myself
. And of course you’re right @MaraJade, it’s not fair to insult anyone.
Anyway i never knew that in spanish version Lancelot was the bad guy! I always thought that was the more likely, to blame him for their affair more than Guen.
@SquishyWitch welcome!
This topic was my first post in cog forums too! I just felt that Jean’s game was to good to not praise it and encourage author to write more. And i even don’t usually play works in progress. I guess i just felt that this could be sth good to read
I never thought I would like the whole Arthurian legend but instead it captivated me. I just had to make an account just so I can say that your work is really really good. Hanging around the WIP forum and trying different games and I was actually ignoring this forum. So one day(which was yesterday) I suddenly said to myself I think its high time I check this one out. Curiosity got in to me. I was entertained and enjoyed it entirely. Keep up the good work! :-bd
Oh yeah, about the romantic choices, for me Arthur’s personality is adorkable. I can see him being my little brother. He is a sweetheart and I’m the type who goes for the bad boy type and not the cutesy, goody kind. Maybe that is why I like Arthur better. Heehee ;))
Oh its so great , have so many people new!. :)) I just never could lurk lol. I´m more direct than that and i always end talking sorry I never was shy.
And about Arthurian legend i just knew the Troyes book and some old stories , in spain chivalry books ending when Quixote was published, the book ridicule so much that legends that the only idea of chevaliers make us laugh. The puns against Lancelot are few but funny as hell . They focus more in Amadis, galaor, Guen is the example of virtuosity in the married women . Don Quixote though in a moment he was lancelot and though two ugly whores were two high noblewoman who come to serve him and remove his armour . Due in medieval spain was a poem who said more or less
No men was best served like Lancelot when he came from Gaul.
High noblewoman take care of him and Maidens take care his horse .
I don’t know if English language could understand our innuendos. the horse in this case only mean that he was give a royal treatment. But yeah for us the guilty is the gaul guy to go bang any noblewoman nearby and dont care if was marry of not. The part Quixote tries to explain he is not like Lancelot to the whores is legendary … =)) . I dont understand why your legends blame only Guen lol.
@SquishyWitch and @OrangeMAL
yay and thank you for reading and for posting! I’m very happy that you enjoyed the game that much. Arthur’s adorkableness will continue in the first four scenes of part 2 (at least, that’s what I’m trying for), where Guen will be able to respond in a range of ways from annoyed frustration to full support.
beards: Well, obviously this is a very important discussion.
On the topic of beards in general, I’m inclined to agree with @Ponku that it depends on the person – most of the time I’m not usually a beard fan, but my biggest fictional character crush of my entire life is Obi-Wan Kenobi, so there’s that. And I know that Duncan’s beard in Dragon Age has a fandom all to itself, though that’s a bit more beard than I personally would be into. As for beards specifically within the Guenevere game, this discussion is really funny to me because one of the things I wrote long ago in my planning notes for part 4 was that Arthur grows a beard, and Guen can tell him to keep it or lose it. So you’ll all be able to customize that much according to your taste and imagination.
@MacNutsAmountFive I suspect that the “wise old man” beard is also, for a lot of people, a signal that the character is supposed to be viewed as non-sexual or post-sexual or something.
@blackrising hmmm, a Guen/Arthur/Lancelot threesome isn’t hard to imagine at all, is it?
I only get tumblr messages asking if that will be possible like every other day… :-"
@MaraJade Don Quixote is one of the most genius pieces of literature of all time and I love that scene at the inn.
It sounds like the Spanish interpretation of Lancelot (and maybe of the Middle Ages in general) owes a lot to the chivalry-parody tradition launched by Cervantes. I agree that it has always seemed misogynistic that Guevenere gets the most blame for the fall of Camelot. Of course, if Camelot falls because Guen engineers it deliberately by poisoning everybody, well, then we can blame and/or praise her accordingly.
But it does seem like my own Lancelot is more honorable, and ultimately more tragic, than the Spanish interpretations.
@jeantown Guen leyend vol 4 Customize your own Husband Arthur version lol =)) .
And about our Lancelot , i think we blame him due is similar figure to Don juan , a tragic spanish figure that did everything to bang with all girls and lend them behind without marry them obligating them to suicide or become nuns due no man wanted them before. Our culture could feel the pain of the used girls even if their are married their were used . Your Barbie is more like a Don juan that suddenly is trap in his own game , also seem genuinely being trying to resist our Lancelot didnt care about arthur at all.
@MarvelousMatty Well, I’m now about halfway through scene 4 of maybe 15 total scenes, so I seem to be writing about one scene a month right now. I do tend to get a lot more writing done in June and July, when my work responsibilities are very light. I would really like to have part 2 finished by the end of the year, but that’s going to require all of the stars being in perfect alignment (no disasters or illnesses etc.)
@MaraJade I guess it’s like an appearance mod you can choose to apply or not.
The Don Juan comparison makes complete sense, and “Don Juan who suddenly is trapped in his own game” works pretty well to describe my Lancelot. Just wait and see how much he tries to resist…
@jeantown This was an absolutely amazing game. I really loved it. I’ve been scrolling through this thread to see if a part two had been posted and then I got to here and nearly died because it’s not here yet. I can’t wait till it’s here! Still, I had a question. Would specializing in dark magic harm your reputation with the citizens of Camelot in later games?
It’s really good!!! I’m so glad I found this. Thanks a lot for writing this. Really, I love it so much.
@Micah88 Thank you! It will still be a long time, but I’m working steadily.
That’s a good question about the dark magic. The answer for the moment is “It should, but I have to see how things develop.” Guen gets reputation points in intelligence for specializing in dark magic, so some people might value that… but people are also wary of dark magic in general. (Morgana isn’t especially popular in spite of being the king’s sister.) I think it will depend on what Guen is trying to accomplish and whose loyalty she wants to have. Politics will get serious in part 4 and be the central element of part 5, so after I write those, I’ll go back and tinker with the earlier parts to set up the political situation from the beginning.
@olivia
Thanks for playing and for posting!
@Micah88 In part 1, it doesn’t matter, plot-wise, which skills Guen has. I did that deliberately, because it’s a character-focused game, and I wanted the reader to pick whichever skills best suited their Guen’s personality. The only serious difference that skills make in part 1 is that if you don’t max out your highest skill, Sir Bretta can die. Otherwise, they really only affect reputation, which doesn’t have any consequences in part 1.
Part 2 should be different. The first half of part 2 is somewhat similar to part 1, in that Guen can get past most hurdles by using whichever of the four skills seems most appropriate for her personality. In the second half of part 2, however, certain outcomes will only be achievable (or preventable) based on certain skills. Eventually, certain outcomes will (I hope) only be achievable based on certain reputation stats. That’s the plan, anyway.
So there won’t really be a “best” combination of skills, but there may be a “best for what you want to achieve” combination.
@Just a stupid question, but will the people give us a title, like Queen Guenevere the Kind or something like that?
@Micah88 That’s definitely on the list of things I’d like to include! MaraJade suggested it, and I think it’s a great idea – a very natural in-game achievement.
@MarvelousMatty
It’s been years since I read it and, as I said, I barely remember a thing. But as far as I know, it’s considered a classic and I’m guessing I liked it…otherwise I probably wouldn’t have read the whole thing (it’s massive). On the other hand, I didn’t have very high standards back then (in my defense, I was around 12 or so), so I can’t guarantee that my opinion counts for much. In any case, Marion Zimmer Bradley is a world famous author and I believe her fantasy novels wouldn’t be as popular as they are if they didn’t hold some merit.
