I will chime in and say that while I always want Guenevere readers to be able to picture the characters however they like, if anyone in this game was going to look like an anime character, it would be Mordred.
…I mean I already made Morgana into Homura, Arthur into the persona 5 protagonist, Lancelot into Naoto (despite not making sense), and Guen into my Avatar from awakening.
Wow! I just found this yesterday and played through as quick as I could. I think this is probably my favourite choose your own adventure game I’ve ever played(narrowly beating choice of robots and life of a wizard). I love how you gave us so many decisions so that despite being a set character your Guenevere could be anyone, and I can’t get enough of the relationships. Personally I couldn’t bring myself to cheat on Arthur because going behind his back when he acted like such an adorable puppy seemed really awful, but I love how many different ways you could play the relationship betweent he four main characters. I’ve been reading through the forum replies since I finished, but I couldn’t bring myself to go through all 4600 ish of them. I can’t wait for the next part to come out and I just think its really great that
you’re writing it
you take lots of feedback and interact with your audience.
I wasn’t paying close attention on my first playthrough of things to improve, but I think that its going to be one of the games I replay over and over again to see all the different options
I='ve been wondering though–in the forum people have been talking a lot about part 3/4/6 etc and those parts aren’t out yet, are they? Did you put out a demo for certain beta-testers or is all the discussion based of spoilers somewhere else in this massive thread?
@Jeantown’s released the titles of Parts 3-7, but they haven’t been written yet. She’s also given out minor details about them - we’ll get to go to Avalon in Part 4, for instance.
@Fallaner You’re absolutely welcome to imagine everyone in the game as anime characters; I just meant that my own mental picture of Mordred lends itself especially well to anime stylization.
@DistractedDaydreamer I’m very happy that you’re enjoying the game! This thread really has gotten huge; I don’t know how anyone could read the whole thing from the beginning (though I hope to do just that someday, once I’ve written a lot more of the game, so I can remember what I said I was going to to). I’m glad you like Arthur, and curious to know how you’ll feel if you ever make a Guen who does cheat! I hope you enjoy replaying; do let me know if you have any suggestions. Thanks for playing and for posting!
I just heard I’m not the only one-Sam Smith and I immediately thought of Arthur😄 it made me so sad to think about Arthur’s feelings and pov towards lance and guens affair. I know you once stated that he won’t be jealous, but I cant help but imagining him housing feelings like the ones expressed in that song. I’m gonna have to do a faithful play through and stop this romancing lance nonsense😓
Heya there! I really really hope that I’m not repeating anything that’s been said multiple times already, I tried reading the entire thread, but it was too much.
Is there any plans for Guenevere to somehow become a Queen regnant? Like say Arthur passes away, and his son is next in line for the throne, but he is extremely incompetent and Guen has no choice but to crown herself the ruler. I realize that bloodlines are extremely important in this universe, but it’s not without precedent IRL as Empress Wu Zetian of China did it with enough support. Maybe it could follow Wu Zetian’s example by using religion as a way of legitimizing a reign (Guen could claim to be the voice of the Goddess or something).
Or maybe she creates/conquers a new realm for herself, crowning herself Queen and then uniting it with Camelot? So Guen would be the monarch of that kingdom and the consort of Camelot, while Arthur is the monarch of Camelot, but the consort of that kingdom.
Also, some minor constructive criticism. I really really enjoy your character design, but sometimes I feel like the dialogue and slang used are a bit… modern? I don’t know, I suppose I was expecting a more “medievalesque” way of speaking?
For example, perhaps use less contractions (I’m, I’d, We’re), and instead of people commenting on how so many girls like Lancelot, you could have people refer to them as maids or maidens instead. And when Morgana talks of Arthur and Lance as “seventeen and twenty and male”, perhaps have her phrase it as “merely lads of no more than twenty summers”. (Okay that’s weird wording, you can do a better job than I xD) I guess what I’m saying is that “renaissance faire” jargon I feel would fit better.
But other than that, really good job. I can honestly say that this is the WIP I’m most looking forward to!
For storyline purposes, Arthur can’t die until Part 7, which will be the end of the game. Plot armor and all that. No regency for Guen.
As for the modern language, @jeantown didn’t want readers to be forced to have an ‘Old English translator’. She wants the story to be understood by anyone who chooses to read it - using period-appropriate language would cause some people to lose interest in the game.
Yeeaaaahhh… I have to agree with @OtherGrimm in regards to language.
Personally, that language would be very difficult to understand and really rather annoying, and may make me not enjoy this game nearly as much as I do (It’s my only “watched” game. I like it enough to watch every post)
Hmmm, what about just less contractions then? It would seem slightly more archaic, but easily understandable to modern readers.
Edit: Maybe this is only a big deal to me because I’m a big fan of Chinese period dramas and it’s been ingrained into my brain that old setting = old language.
@Illmaster hee, hope the faithful playthrough eases your conscience.
@mistylavenda Thanks for playing and for posting! Can’t blame anyone for not reading the entire thread. Yes, Guenevere can become sole ruler in part 7, under various circumstances. That’s always been part of the plan. Sadly, conquering another kingdom is probably more branching than I can handle, but I hope that the variety of available endings will be some consolation.
As for archaic language, that’s something I care very deeply about and have very deliberately chosen to avoid. Here’s something I wrote way way back in the thread, when someone said they thought “thanks” sounded too modern:
(I think there was also some subsequent discussion of Howard Pyle’s pseudo-archaisms in his Robin Hood, which is very dear to my heart in spite of my distaste for “forsooth” language.) I know that lots of people love old-fashioned language and feel that it adds to a historical setting. It’s just a matter of taste, and because I care a lot about language history, I’ve made the stylistic choice to have my characters speak in a way that would seem natural to most English speakers today.
Also, it’s worth noting that many, many CoG readers are not native English speakers. Reading a foreign language is hard enough without a lot of confusing archaisms, as @OtherGrimm and @Fallaner point out.
