They did it a bunch of ways. At one point she could recall powers do to having echos of other peoples memories. At one point she could use multiple powers at once taken from the mutants that were with her and it didn’t cause them pain. I think she has mastery over that now, unless they changed that again.
Chameleon absorption: Able to absorb one ability at a time.
Sponge absorption: Able to absorb and store many abilities.
Would anybody would like to know the most overpower abilities I can think of

Imagine if you absorb all of the most devastating powers on the planet, then accidentally touch Stray and absorb with enhanced clumsiness ability.
The power works like this, they can do anything as long as its funny. Which means they have no limit to their power. They are essentially gods making you the butt of their jokes.
That would the most funnies ability ever

Thanks to you and @Talkingtaco I can’t think of Stray at all without bursting into uncontrollable laughter.
Deadpools crazy abilities like breaking the 4 wall, making thing appeared out of nowhere and reattach ing his limb back togeter
That’s just how we picture stray
“Nya ha you will never catch me” runs into closet instead of out the door then MC opens closet door and stray is pretending to be a coat on a hangar
