What makes Ortega suspicious?

It’s mostly affected by what you do during the date at the HG connected dinner with Ortega.

To add to this, even if it’s not the MC who brings it up first, was it intended for no one to talk about Step’s eye situation?
I could see Ortega/Chen/Herald not wanting to get into it and Vera, the henchmen etc. thinking it’s just one of the many injuries from the crash but I still thought I’d point it out in case it wasn’t a conscious writing choice for no one to comment on the matter.

wait, wait, wait! it’s been a long time since i played the previous books but who the hell is vera and armadillo? why am i only hearing about them now? I got the ending scene where mc gets shocked that their door is open after having a nightmare and them realizing that the choke marks that the puppet left in the supposed nightmare felt too real. i was a little confused by the tornado green dream sequence? though i chalked it up to me not remembering some stuff about the previous games. unless that was new. how and why did i get these scenes? is it because i chose that the puppet feels like a person at times?

i see, how to meet them?

ah got it, thanks so much! i always picked being saved by argent, i couldn’t resist her, unfortunately. turns out i’ll have to do so to meet the new additions then.

and i’m not a patron! now i’m reminded that i should be if i wanna know more about tornado green…

They are new to this book

i was a little confused by the tornado green dream sequence?

That’s also new info unless you are a patron. Think there are going to be flashbacks to it though out book 3

is it because i chose that the puppet feels like a person at times?

Right now the puppet imposter stat is random until the code for it is done. My guess is that it will be coming with the next ending

i see, how to meet them?

Pick the ending where none of the rangers break you out

This made my day! Went through all the breakout branches (will do the 1.2.2 branch another time) and wow, I can never not be amazed by the character writing in this series.

Argent
  • Not much to say compared to the others. The banter is as sharp and fun as ever. I missed her!
  • Considering the options in Chen’s route, I’m a bit disappointed that she can’t meet the henchmen / you can’t avoid Sidestep being alone unlike in Daniel and Chen’s routes. I usually see Argent as the most trustworthy of the Rangers, followed by Chen with a good Sidestep. The way Sidestep pushes her away and puts up their walls in all the end options with her was a bit jarring even if it makes sense that her presence would scare the henchmen off.
Chen
  • I like that you have the option here to decide how much Sidestep trusts him. While it says a lot that he’s broken Sidestep out given his principles and position, he’s still the Marshal at the end of the day.
  • adorable. Sidestep asking for a kiss goodbye in one of the sub-branches made me melt
  • no complaints with the flow and options. Potentially the most hopeful of the lot if Sidestep chooses to trust him

Aside from that, not sure if this is a typo or a missing sentence:

ā€œI’m going to try to distract him from that line of thought. And I think he’s more likely to think… Hollow Ground is to blame.ā€ There’s an effort to the last words, as if they hurt to say. I

This is where Sidestep talks to Chen about Ortega ^

Daniel
  • Choices and dialogue are consistent with the romantic dynamic in book 2. No major complaints in terms of flow. Herald remaining stubborn no matter what bullshit Sidestep spews is on brand
  • The options where Sidestep can think they make a great team are a bit odd. They either love it and are hopeful, or hate it and are bitter? It would be nice to have the option to have something in between that, like Sidestep acknowledging that they make a good team but Sidestep believing that they’ve ruined any chance for that compatibility to ever come to use again. I picked the first option and was surprised to see them hopeful about Daniel switching sides when nothing else in this branch has them trying to act on that hope
  • The variations of the henchmen interactions were surprisingly delightful.
  • The prose here is my favorite of the branches, and man does it hurt. All variations of the last bits of their exchange hit hard, and it makes me curious to see how he’d take the truth on other routes
Ortega
  • Everyone’s favorite manic pixie dream MILF/DILF probably has the most subdued branch here. Sidestep and Ortega have shouted at each other enough in Retribution so it makes sense for them both to seem very defeated and not argue all that much here
  • Sidestep refusing Ortega’s offer to stay fits given everything that’s happened but it would be nice to have an option for angrier Sidesteps before they part ways at the end. Sidestep gets to be cold and mean here but it feels very restrained compared to previous books where Sidestep has the opportunity to blow a gasket every few dialogue options. Then again, Sidesteps on this branch should be on better terms with Ortega. My memory of the Ortega ending that leads to this is pretty foggy. I’ve had too many Retribution playthroughs to properly keep things straight
Assorted feedback and thoughts
  • The crash-guilty path in Retribution is probably my favorite due to how much it disrupts Sidestep’s relationships with the Rangers so I’m glad this path was the first to get a demo.
  • All branches feel distinct, though Argent’s and Ortega’s feel a bit shorter? Or felt like they ended abruptly. This may also be because I read through them too fast and because they can’t interact with the henchmen. Not sure.
  • I’m curious to see how these branches affect the poly dynamics and people going for Ortega-Chen or Ortega-Daniel poly. There’s some acknowledgement of the established Ortega-Argent poly relationship in Argent’s branch (and the dream sequence) but I don’t think it’s mentioned much if at all in Ortega’s branch.
  • The henchmen interactions with the Rangers make me wonder if the choice of henchmen will have any impact on major events down the line

I’ll probably write my feedback/thoughts on the 1.2.2 branch and the end scene variations in another reply. I’ve only seen the dream variation of the end scene and not the rest.

I’ve only played through the 1.2.3 (guilty, Ortega breakout) version of the demo for now. This was the first ending I got with my blind run of Retribution and will be my canon run also.
It was so interesting (the nightmare about Void especially) and it ended so fast :frowning:

I realize it would create an enormous branch in the already very complicated game, but my Step would be more then willing to let Ortega drive her to her secret base and take care of her instead of leaving her in the park to be picked up by Boris.

So, yeah, I would really like that choice and I understand if you can’t include it in the final version.

And now it is time to check the other variants of the demo!

well green has also others meaning lol but yeah, I noticed the trend too. I’m guilty of it myself lol

Green Rulez, and everyone droolez! :broccoli:

ā€˜I serve you the suffering first, redemption come last’

Nothing confused me so far, but gotta say that dream at the end? One hell of a cliffhanger…it really slap.

If Step got face scars (not sure if it is possible to lose depth perception and still get escape help from anyone) from Argent but is liberated by Herald, I think there should be a reference to the Argent/Herald fight (and it’s a physical fight, not a verbal one. It’s both, but it is definitely both physical and verbal) that takes place before the rescue in Retribution. That said, I am not sure if Herald would talk about it or if Step would ask.

Green is the color most commonly associated in the United States and Europe with springtime, freshness, and hope. Green is often used to symbolize rebirth and renewal and immortality.

Well, at least ā€œrebirthā€ makes sense when it comes to Sidestep xD

Did I understand correctly that took out the light brown hair color? And now it’s justc brown? I remember that was discussed in the second book.

I played Argent breakout route, and it was so fun! I love how playful and teasing they are with each other. I liked it when my tall Sidestep mentally complained that Argent is so short, that her head dangled too close to the ground while Angie carried her. Maybe it’s you who are too tall! :joy:

This cracked me up too: ā€œI’m not whining,ā€ you whine. And ā€œlittle telepathy thing.ā€ Ah, these two are too precious together!

I think it’s a little awkward that Rosie repeated ā€œAlright, hold onā€ two times in a row.

@TomK Yes, there are no more light and dark brown hair colours, only brown. But this is only a temporary character creator for the demo, because you also can’t type in your own hair colour, as it was possible in the second book (which can also be used to manually type in light/dark brown).

At the ending puppet scene, if we have a mirror image puppet, I think there should be a reference to that. It’s prime placement for such IMO.

Also, on a recent playthrough I didn’t get any puppet encounter.

is this one of the random outcomes?

In the future, I’m guessing the ones that don’t visit you will the ones that don’t hate you (because you didn’t abuse the puppet and/or get too comfortable in them)? Because the two that visit you were certainly trying to kill you (even if they couldn’t go through with it after Step awoke).

Also, if we have a mirror image puppet, Bo/Rosie/Pelayo should react to Step’s resemblance to the puppet (ask about family relationship or something) during the pickup (if applicable).

Not all impostors come to visit you. Only two get indepth encounters, the one who comes with the gun, and one who attempts to strangle you in your sleep. The others don’t stick around.

At the very least they’re more patient. One of them gives Vera bad vibes, the other gives her good vibes.

I wonder what the Puppet/Impostor thinks of Ortega and/or Mortum, especially if the Puppet is dating them.

Maybe hostile puppet will use Mortum against Sidestep? I can already imagine it - all it takes is a few tears, puppy eyes and a word about how terrible ā€œthe bossā€ is to them, and Mortum will become our enemy.

There’re three variants of the demo ending. One where the puppet comes with a gun, one where they attempt to strangle the MC, and one where they don’t make an appearance. Currently what scene you get is decided randomly.

That is so diabolical. I love it.

I would not be surprised if that hasn’t already happened on some paths
