Fallen Hero open character question thread

@Silent15 . To Lady Argent: You seem to have something of a distaste for the limelight and the media. Are you simply not a social individual or is there another reason for it?

And to all the Rangers, what led each of you to become a hero, to chance the drug or pay for for the mods?

Lady Argent: Have you seen me? Have you seen the pictures off me in the media? You don’t have to be not social not to like having paparazzi crawl up your skirt or speculate whether your nipples are bulletproof. As for becoming a hero… let’s just say the opportunity presented itself.

Steel: It was a chance to do something better than fight an unjust war in an otherwise unimportant corner of the world. Once you’re already modded, there are limited options open to you.

Herald: I… look, this is personal. My brother and I had a dream, we wanted to do something great, to matter. To be heroes I suppose. He… didn’t make it through. I did. I can’t let him down.

@Lazerfarm - I think we all need a refresher from the differences between mods, boosts , and the enhanced. From sidestep of course since she is the most familiar with all three.

Sidestep: Boosts are rebuilt with cybernetics, or interfaces with machinery. On a genetic level they are basic human stock. Boosts are bio-engineered, the drugs have changed the body enough that some can hardly be called human anymore. Generally they end up sterile. More powerful, more prone to self-destructing. Boosts can also be fitted with mods, to help modify or control their powers. The enhanced is an overlapping term for everybody more than human. What you might be thinking about are re-genes, which are artificially grown bodies fitted with artificial minds. They have been called bio-robots in the past.

@Eiwynn - Yes, this question is to Dr. Mortum: Have you in the past and are you currently employed by the entity known as “the Farm”
and
Dr, Mortum: Have you “worked on or with” Sidestep before?

Dr. Mortum: I have been employed by many men and organizations, mademoiselle. Most of them never use their true name, or communicates through intermediaries. I am self-employed, nobody pulls my strings anymore, and if I have worked for this ‘farm’… they did not use that name.

I sadly never had the opportunity to work on Sidestep before their unfortunate demise,

@ProjectEkerTest33 - To The Special Directive: First of all I despise you. Secondly what is your ultimate goal? Are you just trying to maintain the status quo or can we expect some super take-over the country/world type plans?

SD: ****** **** ****** ** ******’ ********* * **** ** ******* *** ******!

@Mewsly - Dr Mortum: I love you… Wait, it’s supposed to be a question. Um. If you had unlimited resources what kind of inventions would you work on?

Dr. Mortum: A giant robot, ma cherie, is there any more fabulous dream for a mad scientist?

_@Loveless - To Ortega: How did you cope after the Heartbreak incident? Do you find it ironic that it was named as such? _

Steele: How do you really feel about Sidestep’s return? Take into consideration that due to their return you now know the culprit behind Lady Argents ‘incident’.

Herald: You beat the House. Congratulations! You are now a hero. Some say you’re in WAY over your head. Others that your a phony only in it for the fame. What response do you have for your critics?

Argent: Hello beautiful. How are you this fine evening? I have a question I’ve just been dying to ask. If things with Herald don’t work out would you be open to a relationship with a certain ex-hero, who’s adored you since they first felt the inside of your mind?

Dr.Mortum: Hello dearest Doctor. If your dear Puppet was to come to stating that their mysterious boss has become smitten with you, what would your thoughts on the matter be?

Ortega: It was ironic I suppose, the media named it because it made people kill themselves. And no, I didn’t. It’s one of those things you can’t cope with, you can just live through it and hope you come out on the other end in one piece. And now that they are back… it’s… confusing I suppose. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy, but it also makes me wish I would have tried harder you know? I don’t know what happened yet, but I feel like I messed this up somehow. Or that they blame me for it anyway.

Steel: I am glad that they are alive, despite my misgivings they have done a lot of good. I just wish that Ortega would be over their ridiculous obsession and let them retire in peace.

Herald: My response to my critics is as always, watch me prove you wrong!

Argent: I have no idea why people keep trying to cast me in some sort of tragic farce of a relationship. I don’t need anyone else to be who I am, who are people going to try to pair me off with next? The mayor?

Dr. Mortum: Quite frankly I would be a little worried. The telepathically sensitive are always a risk to be around, and someone like that, obsessing from afar is even more so. Luckily I am quite prepared to deal with little issues like that.

@Lord_Zant - To Ortega, Herald, Argent, Steel and Dr. Mortum:
What is your favorite color?

Ortega: White of course.

Herald: I suppose… red?

Argent: What even makes you think I see color the same way you do?

Steel: That is an inane question, why would anyone have a favorite color? I suppose… blue is nice though.

Dr: Mortum: Orange, without a doubt. Striking!

@Edgewen - Ortega: If a Villain is doing villainous things for the right reasons, does that make them a hero in all but reputation? Even if they try to minimize the risk to those around them in their crusade?

Yasmin: Hiya, honey, do you like the hairstyle I gave you? Bobs are just the bees knees, but I wanna know what you think.

Lady Argent: What do you think of Sidestep?

Herald: Second verse, same as the first. What’s your opinion of Sidestep? Do you even know who that is, you widdle baby wanger?

Ortega: That’s… that’s a good question actually. I suppose they are still breaking the law, but if they had a cause… hell, I have broken a few laws myself back in the day. In my opinion a villain is someone that hurts people. Minimizing the risks is nice, but that also sounds like just a little bit of self.righteous bullshit. The whole killing the few to save the many. I can’t think like that.

Yasmin: … … … … … h…air?

Lady Argent: He looks broken.

Herald: Of course I know who that is, I’ve seen the vids growing up! I mean… I thought they would be taller? And a bit cooler. But I suppose they are retired now, and don’t have to look good for the cameras anymore.

@nazu_gull - Dr. Mortum! What are your credentials? And what drives you to create?
Ortega, do you have any qualms about killing? Also, are you ever going to shave off that mustache…?
Dear Puppet, why don’t you have family or friends anymore? Did you have a falling out of some sor

((Welcome aboard :)))

Dr. Mortum: An inquisitive mind and a driven imagination are all the credentials I need, mademoiselle. Papers are for lesser academics, still stuck in the endless cycle of grant-chasing. I found my freedom outside it. As for what drives me to create… to see if it can be done of course! There is nothing that is impossible… just implausible.

Ortega: I don’t like killing. If I did I would be in the military. Killing is wrong, that’s all it is to it. And I happen to like my mustache…

Puppet: … … … … … …f…riends?

(This is such a cool thread - this might be thinking way ahead, but I really hope you do one for Book 2 as well!)

Two questions for both Ortega and Sidestep: first of all, what was the goat incident? And secondly, what’s your favourite mission (for lack of a better word) that you worked on together?

@Lux_Inferni - To Steel:
-Did you attend Sidestep’s funeral and how did their death make you feel? Was it like seeing a ghost when they showed up ten years later?
-Who could you trust more to have your back in battle: Argent and Herald or Sidestep?

To Ortega:
-How much do you want to cuddle Sidestep right now?
-What is the story behind the goat thing?
-Did anything seem off about the new villain? Would it be something they said or maybe something they did?

This one is for Ortega and Steel:
Let’s say in Sidestep’s ten year disappearance they were tortured and experimented on by the government. By your employers. How would you make sure the same isn’t done to others and help people like Sidestep? Or would you consider this a necessary evil?

To Argent and Herald:
-Could you see yourself becoming friends with Sidestep?
-Does Ortega talk nonstop about Sidestep and how many stories do they tell about their not-so-dead friend?

This last question goes to Sidestep:
If you weren’t busy doing villainous things, would you nurse Ortega back to health?

Steel: Of course I attended, they were one of our fallen comrades. It never feels good, especially since it could have been avoided had they just stuck closer to me. It was a bit of a shock when they showed up again, I will admit, but also a relief. And I would trust Argent the most, she can handle herself and I know how she thinks.

Ortega: That’s… personal. But they do need a hug, that much is obvious. The goat though… don’t ask about the goat. I made a promise. And the new villain… yes, something seemed off. Too intense. Weird. I got the feeling that this was personal.

Steel: Experiments can be a necessary evil, but torture never is. That being said, I trust my superiors to know the right call in these matters.

Ortega: That’s messed up though. I don’t think our government would do that, and if they did… they are wrong.

Argent: Friends with Sidestep? Perhaps. Ortega must see something in them. And yes, there are stories. More so now than before.

Herald: Friends? You think they would? I mean… yeah, maybe. If they wanted to. I’ve heard Ortega’s stories and it would be great to have them back with the Rangers!

Sidestep: I would like to say I am not a nurse, but… [sighs] I have done it before. Would do it again. That idiot can’t take care of themself.

@NorWal - To Ortega, the Rangers and Dr. Mortum - Your personal theme songs? Or pre-mission/work hype songs, if you can’t think of any.

And another for the Rangers - Who’s the worst villain you’re had to fight while you’ve been active, besides the new guy.

Out of character: I literally know nothing about any music other than death/thrash metal, so I will dodge that question not to make a fool of myself.

Steel: Worst villain? Heartbreak. Without question.

Ortega: Yeah, but that was the whole situation, I don’t think they…

Steel: I do. But fine, Emperor then.

Ortega: Oooh good one, yes he was pretty bad. Or are you just sore he got you to kneel before him?

Steel: I don’t like people that can play with your mind.

Ortega: I think Hollow Ground. And that’s just because we haven’t beaten them yet.

Lady Argent: You really do have an obsessive personality. I think Stinkrag is the worst.

Herald: You beat him in five minutes flat?

Lady Argent: And smelled him for weeks. Whatever that coating on his skin was just wouldn’t go away…

Herald: I always thought Psychopator was pretty nasty. Not much I could do there except getting hurt.

@Shawn_Patrick_Reed - I have two things I’d like to ask you, with the consideration that they may help you, and may or may not tie in to one another. The first is, do you remember your childhood? More than one or two small details- are there any significant holes on what you can remember about your past, I wonder. The second is, do you know what would happen to you if your main body were to die while controlling a puppet? Would you die, I wonder, or would your conscience jump into the puppet… Not that there’s any certitude, but from what you can gather, is there any possibility you might have been someone else before you were Sidestep? That’s three questions, I’m aware, but you would know better than I do whether there’s any danger of ever combining with someone else’s consciousness. If this has happened to you, it may be possible you don’t remember events before such an occurance, but I suppose you may have more concept of if such a thing is theoretically possible. If the case for a non-psycher is a hard ‘no’, I pose to you an expansion of the question- what if it was another psychic individual?

Sidestep: Of course I remember my childhood. Whether I want to is a different matter… I think about it as little as possible.

And I have no idea what would happen if I would die while inside the puppet. It’s an interesting idea in theory, would I stay in the new brain and lose my powers? Or keep them? Or die as my body did?

As for your third so called non-question. Sure I can dream about not being who I am, have fantasies just like anybody else. Oh no, I was adopted, I was abducted by faeries, I am really royalty or whatever escapist drama that people believe in to survive life. If I went down that road I would already be stark raving mad, it’s not smart to start doubting your identity as a psychic, you run the risk of losing everything.

@squarelyblue - Ortega, how long have you known Sidestep? Was it immediately after they debuted as a vigilante (conversely sometime after) or even before that?

And how is your relationship with Steel? Are you friends? Or just colleagues/comrades?

Ortega: A long time… I think they were pretty new to the vigilante scene when I met them for the first time? I hadn’t heard of them at least.

Steel? We’re friends. We’ve been friends a long time. It might not always look it, but I trust his judgement on… most things. Not all. He helped me get back on my feet after getting my mods.

@Sammysam - A question for our most favorite superhero team: Who of your colleagues would you rather punch in the face (if you had to choose at least one of them)?

Ortega: Steel, wouldn’t be the first or the last time.

Steel: Lady Argent, she can take it.

Lady Argent: Does a slap count? I don’t want to break Herald.

Herald: That’s… nobody? Do I have to choose one? Argent then, she owes me one. I’m still sore.

@idonotlikeusernames - _Herald: “What do you make of this new villain singling you out for the brunt of their fury?”

Ortega, Steele (and Herald since loss of powers seems to most visibly unnerve him), what do you make of Sidestep’s claim that he lost his powers and what do you think of the implications that it might be possible for all boosts to lose their powers under the right, or should I say wrong, circumstances?_

Herald: Probably jealousy. I know there are a lot of people that are. Also, I am by far the least scary one on the team, so I can sort of understand that too. The thought of losing my powers is… no. That is not supposed to happen. I have sacrificed too much. There’s something else at play here.

Ortega: I can see it. I mean the hero drug is just a drug, it might wear off in time. Don’t see why people are so surprised.

Steel: People do not like to learn that their bodies can be as unreliable as machines.

@SeventhJackel - This is for Steel and Ortega: You’ve both been Rangers for a long time, how many different Ranger groups have there been in that time? Seems like the turnover could be pretty fast.

And as a follow-up question, how does this group measure up to previous groups abilities wise?

And finally just for Steel: what branch of the military were you in and what was your experience?

Steel: I have served under five different Marshals, and now I am one. During that time we’ve had…

Ortega: I think we’ve had over twenty members in total? Coming and going that is, we were what, seven at our largest size? Three at our smallest. But there haven’t been complete lineup changes, think of it more like a football team.

Steel: You mean soccer.

Ortega: The analog would work for american football as well, you know…

Steel: And yes, the turnover can be pretty fast. We have had people quitting after a single mission.

Ortega: And a lot never gets through being vetted and are more or less deputized by the Marshal as needed for the particular mission.

Steel: I do think our current lineup is a bit lacking. We are currently searching for viable candidates, but it is a process.

Ortega: I agree. We’re pretty weak in the information/intelligence/communication department right now. I don’t understand why they won’t give us clearance to bring in the talent we need.

Steel: I was in the 55th armored infantry, trained as an airdrop power armor pilot.

how did Ortega and you meet ,Sidestep?

@forWantOf - To Ortega: You seem to hold unconditional regard towards Sidestep( or at least their legacy) whenever you talk about them. What exactly about Sidestep’s character or your shared history makes you trust them and admire them so much?

To Steel: You’ve worked with Ortega for a long time. Can you recall an exception when they weren’t so accepting and determinedly optimistic?

To Sidestep: Ortega and Argent seem to talk often and appear to be close friends. While the pair isn’t the new Charge and Sidestep, how do you feel about their relationship, speaking as Ortega’s former go-to for favorite companion? Also, if you would indulge us, what is the first thing you remember doing when you finally freed yourself from captivity?

To any of the characters that’d be willing to respond: Who’s the superhero( or supervillain) that you’d say you’ve looked up to the most in the past or present?

Ortega: Sidestep were… I mean is… you know that sometimes you just meet people you click with? Who doesn’t try to dissuade you from doing something crazy, but instead tries to figure out how to make it work? I guess I admire them because they were so hopelessly outmatched in many ways, but never let it get to them. They could have been killed a dozen times over, it wasn’t like they were wearing much armor or anything, but they never let that stop them. That’s something I get and respect. As for trusting them… always. With my life. One you’ve had to rely on each other enough you get that kind of trust.

Sidestep: No. Infuriatingly positive is pretty much the norm when it comes to Ortega. Not that I can read their mind and find out what they really feel or anything…

Sidestep: Of course Ortega would be drawn to Argent. They see something they want to fix. I’m glad they have a new project. I really couldn’t care less.

… the first thing I remember? Milkshake. Milkshake is good.

Ortega: I always looked up to Marshal Hood, he was very much the sort of leader I’d like to become. Not getting very close though…

Steel: Pyrrhia from back in the eighties. I remember watching her on television, she was the one that made me want to become modded in the first place.

Lady Argent: Ashfall. I have my reasons.

Herald: I… okay, this is getting to be a bit embarrassing, and don’t tell Ortega but I always thought Sidestep looked so cool on television.

@theredwoman - Two questions for both Ortega and Sidestep: first of all, what was the goat incident? And secondly, what’s your favourite mission (for lack of a better word) that you worked on together?

Ortega: Once and for all, enough about the goat!

Sidestep: That’s the problem, isn’t it? There was just a lot of goat, more than enough I’d say.

Ortega: Don’t… just don’t…

Sidestep: You were the one that wanted to be a hero.

Ortega: Don’t remind me.

Sidestep: Are you sure? I think there might still be pictures online somewhere…

Ortega: I can say that my lest favorite mission for sure was the goar mission.

Sidestep: It was my favorite one.

Ortega: You’re evil!

Sidestep: …

Ugh… book two is getting all the juicey stuff man.

Okay question for Ortega. If you were to find out a loved one had done something that might be considered morally wrong by your standards but turning them in would most likely mean death ( or close to it) would you turn them in or let them slide?

Oh I have some more question!

Steel: Well, despite everything you seem suprisingly…likable? Did you ever consider to be nicer to people? Just generally speaking.

Lady Argent: You are a tough woman with probably a bunch of fans. And as humans are rather weird you probably have some weird fans, too. So did one of them ever ask you to punch/slap them? (Bonus: If yes, did they want to pay you for that punch/slap? Bonus Bonus: Did you do it?) (Question inspired by this Wonder Woman comic)

Herald: How is it to be the “baby” of the team? Also are you interested in older women/men/people outside the gender binary, especially if they are the retired hero type? * winkwinknudgenudge *

Ortega: Only hypothetical speaking, how would you react to a villain harbouring an unhealthy crush on you? Like, a really huge crush.
Also, while speaking about crush, we heard you may have a new sweetheart, not somebody working in the hero business though…so, are you worried about their security? Is it easier to have a relationship with a fellow hero or a civillian?
Also, in no way connected to the previous question how good do you deal with difficult decisions?

Dr.Mortum: Your words about credentials give me the feeling that you feel quite the dislike for academic elitism; Am I correct with that assessment?
Also despite this, who would you say are your inspirations / for which scientific minds do you feel admiration/would you love to work with?

We wouldn’t dream of it.:relieved: And why are you worried about Ortega finding out as opposed to side step?

Question for Ortega: Purely hypothetically, if someone you trusted and cared about a lot turned out to be a lying, scheming, manipulating, mass-murderer, what would you do?

To Dr. Mortum: What are your views on ethics in science? In other words, what lines are you unwilling to cross?

For Ortega: Rumor has it that sidestep was a welcome guest in your mother’s home. Sounds like the two of you were closer than we thought. How did your family (if you have any beyond your mother) take the news of Sidestep still being alive.

For Dr. Mortum and Sidestep each: We all know of the telepathically linked rat brains that function as the targeting system for Psychopathor’s gun, also known as the Rat King, but how was this process possible? I have a hard time believing that whomever did such a thing to these poor rats thought this up simply to use the end result as a targeting array for a crazed villain so that brings me to my next question: was it possibly a precursor for human trials?

If it was, then theoretically speaking how would it affect humans who are much more complex and diverse in thinking? Would they merge into one telepathic super being, would they share telepathic power yet maintain their individuality like some kind of brain linked siblings, or would there be some kind of brutal assimilation much like a twin eating its other half in the womb but in this case the victor would gain the other’s mind, memories, and power as their own?

I’m pretty sure you’re not colorblind. In fact, I’m sure that you can see more colors than us normal people. Colors some of us can’t even begin to imagine. But everyone has a favorite color, much like every scientist has a favorite element. Speaking of which…

Dr. Mortum: From one mad scientist to another; what is your favorite element?

First off, excellent choice in color. Second, it’s far from an inane question, my friend, you’d be surprised what a simple color choice tells about you. Now for question time: I heard you have quite the armory. As an innocent bystander, would I be able to find similar weapons at my local gun store or would I have to look in the black market to find them?.. Not that I would mind you.

And since somehow, someway the puppet is actually giving some answers to questions. Puppet: What is your favorite color?

And now for a new question: Ortega, Argent, Steel, Herald, Dr. Mortum, Puppet and Sidestep: Day and year you were born? For those a bit more sensitive about the topic, what is your Chinese Zodiac sign?

Generally anyone who wants to answer: have you seen Rogue One and how do you feel about the movie

Ah, nearly forgot that question, but for the Rangers, Dr.Mortum and Sidestep:
What kind of D&D character would you play? (In the sense of “neutral good Human warrior”, “chaotic neutral Dwarf Bard”, etc)
Also who of you already did/does play tabletop rpgs ?

Who’s to say the people being experimented on don’t feel as if they are being tortured? Would you still trust your superiors if they were doing these things to children?

That seems uncharacteristically protective… I think Sidestep would have been just fine if Anathema hadn’t, you know.

To Steel:

  • If Sidestep wanted to, now that you’re the Marshal, would you allow them to go on a mission with the Rangers? Or ask them to do something the Rangers can’t due to the red tape?
  • I know you aren’t fond of telepaths, but have you ever wondered what it might feel like being able to know everyone’s darkest secrets? How do you think Sidestep feels?
  • When you thought Sidestep was dead, was there anything you regretted doing or not doing when they were alive?

To Ortega:

  • Is it easy to get along with Yasmin/Dylan or is there something familiar about them? Is it wise to talk about Sidestep to someone you don’t really know, especially with this new villain destroying museum exhibits?
  • If Herald has a crush on Sidestep, taking your own feelings into account, would you be okay with Herald trying to woo them? Or is this a personal question?
  • What was that one battle with Psychopathor like? The one where Sidestep distracted him so you could fry him.

To Herald:

  • What is more likely and why: you being jealous of Sidestep or Sidestep being jealous of you?
  • If you could ask Sidestep any question without having to worry about anything, what would it be?
  • A new villain calls themselves Sidestep. How does that make you feel?

To Argent:

  • How is the whole being in love thing working out for Ortega?
  • What do you think of the new villain? Has it turned into a personal vendetta?
  • What caused you to want to be a hero? You seem like you’d have a good reason to do so, regardless if it’s personal or not.

To Herald and Argent: If you had the chance, would you let Sidestep train you?

To Sidestep:

  • Have you ever read Steel’s mind? If so, what does he think about?
  • How did you and Ortega end up flirting with each other? Did Ortega initiate it?
  • Do you ever get the feeling that Ortega is an idiot on purpose?

To Dr. Mortum:

  • How can Yasmin’s/Dylan’s boss trust you? Sure, money is a good motivator but it wouldn’t be over a long period of time.
  • How do you know that everything you tell Yasmin/Dylan isn’t going straight back to their boss?
  • Would you say the suit is going to be your magnum opus or are you reserving judgement until everything is said and done?

To everyone: You guys should have your own soap opera. I’d watch it.
