It is absolutely frustrating when you do everything right and still lose. But that is also life. I actually appreciate that this story forces the mc to play a longer term strategy. We lost the first battle but honestly the odds are still in our favor against Saren. We have magic, the dragon language, and potentially the support of the other riders. He has more free time and more training. Unless we stay stuck as stable hands for years I doubt he can catch up with us.

Well, yeah, Shader would be a snarky arsehole regardless, but it’s a bit more humiliating to be considered ‘mediocre pooper-scooper’ instead of ‘mediocre race-winner.’ 
But if it’s really important to you to keep the PC from winning that first race, I’m not gonna contest it any further.

Is it possible to get all the achievements listed in the current demo, specifically the one for starting a romance with Shader? I saw some comments but I haven’t been able to do so and the only characters I’ve managed to get above 50% have been my dragon, my family and Vanora.

No, most of those achievements are for the full game. The only achievement you can get in the demo is the Born Racer one, unless I’ve added some others and I can’t remember at the moment.
