First thing i noticed is that it sits in uncanny valley in regards to scene, yes you dont want to go explicit. but I really dont get the feel when i go for the brutal opinions. I think that you went a bit too soft there, i mean i noticed how the merciful options are a bit longer and i noticed the abstraction, i understand i just feel that you are abstracting too much for something that is bit more on horror side.
BTW: Why not combine stuff ? First have parasite have host and then absorb it from withing rather than EAT EAT EAT, because i dont know how you want to accomplish the game being more psychological than find food kill and manipulate her memories to ease transition into your biomass.

It’s not really a parasite if it’s swallowing the host whole… It’s just ya know… A monster that swallows people but is really inefficient at digesting them.
By the way, a virus is a very different thing from a parasite so it’s a bit weird that a scientist would be calling it a virus.
Speaking of the intro, assuming that the rest of this game takes place in the modern day I kinda have to wonder how this thing survived in the wild for so long while still being so bad at passing for human, and how it ended up shitting there next to Alice’s bed.

Wait, ‘shitting’? I mean, the story is supposed to be frightening and transgressive, but even I wouldn’t describe the MC’s bathroom habits.
More seriously, good feedback here from everyone. Please keep it coming. A few things I’d like to comment on before Sunday’s update:
-There’s a lot of confusion about what exactly happened to Alice. The original idea was that her mind and body were absorbed into the MC’s own mind and body.
The images of her going to college, getting laid, and so on are actually altered memories being ‘played back’ in an attempt to break her.
Since this requires me to explain how she has a conscious mind without a nervous system, I’m planning on the following edit:
Alice will remain alive during the brainwashing. Afterwards, the MC will be given the choice to kill Alice (absorbing her body and boosting physical stats) or turn her into a ‘puppet’ (having her join the hivemind, which will let you lure in more victims and such).
-As a flaky pol-sci major, I never made it very clear whether the MC was a parasite or a virus. This scientific error will be fixed.
@Shoelip raised an interesting question: how has nobody noticed the MC yet? The answer is that people notice what they want to, and it’s not uncommon for someone to easily hide horrifying secrets, despite acting suspicious. Example: serial killers of the ‘He was such a quiet guy’ variety.

Bit sick currently, so have a mini-update instead. New features include an improved brainwashing scene, a clearer explanation of the MC’s abilities, the chance to kill the host instead of brainwashing her, and the option to customize the host’s name.
Also, the title has changed, because scientific accuracy.

Short, yet lovely. I liked the bit about Orson Scott Card.
If choosing to have hands, you mention that we lose a few fingers and some skeletal muscles. I wonder if we can repair these somehow in the future? (Improve our hand-to-hand skill(?)) Or maybe replace them with better limbs? My monster won’t be able to use them to their full potential otherwise. (Sorry if I’m being too intense about this, muscle physiology’s sorta my thing
)
And, of course, my inner RPGer won’t stay quiet. Can we get venom attacks if we ingest enough animals with venom glands?

@Dankman I like the way you think! Feel free to provide further feedback on any more scientific issues that strike your notice–it’ll be useful to have input from an actual anatomist.
There will definitely be opportunities to repair or replace some limbs. Once stats are more fully implemented, for example, the first victim will give an optional boost to skeletal muscle health.
As for poison attacks…I hadn’t thought of that, but it’s perfectly within the MC’s canon abilities, so it’s a good possibility. I’d need to explain how venomous animals ended up on a college campus, but I suppose the science department would have some live specimens.

I’m not really an actual anatomist, it’s just part of the specialties my curriculum has in college. I still have a couple of years to go, but I’m willing to give feedback when I can.
Fun fact, snakes are more powerful (in terms of muscle density and strength) and can move at blinding speeds when compared to humans. Any way we can incorporate this?

You have delightful ideas and I love it. Lemme think about the snake. At the moment I’m focused on characters rather than action, but that may very well change.

How resistant are parasites to damage? Like what would it take to kill one
1 Like
It’s no longer a parasite, since several beta testers have pointed out that it would be scientifically inaccurate.
The MC’s host body and puppets are made of a patchwork of various body-parts. A special protective coating makes them heavily resistant to most diseases, and (because parts are often replaced) they are functionally immune to aging. However, they’re really just (very strong) flesh and bone, and could be killed the same way as any other large animal.

New update! Part of Chapter 2 added. A few more customizations, some angst, and a first meeting with two ROs.
Feedback and bug-hunting are, as always, welcome!

Does magic exist in your world (aside from necromancy and monsters)?
If it is, is it something the public knows about or some rare secret thing (do people except the scientists know about monsters like you by the way?)
Also, one more question. Will there be more delving into the prior memories of others and altering them, and psychological horror?

@Frogs Excellent question! In this story, magic and monsters are not common knowledge. Some of it is known to a few scholars (including Professor Braun), who’ve been drawing on pre-existing (if disreputable) sources. For example, necromancy in this universe is based on comparative anatomy, early accounts of flesh golems, and so on. As you might imagine, though, this sort of view is only held by a few academics! Less traditional monsters, like our MC, are not known to anyone except a few dead scientists…and anyone who finds the lab records.
One mistake in this new update is that I didn’t make clear just how secret this body of knowledge is. To clarify: we meet Metzger when he is alone in the lab. Professor Braun knows about his hobby, but nobody else on campus does.
@zenith8 Yes! I’m planning a climactic encounter or encounters with parts of the Hive later in the story.

A solid update added to Chapter II! We figure out what Professor Braun actually wants us to do. We get to know two of our ROs. And we meet a psychotic baby, because babies are funny.
Next week we’ll be kidnapping and (possibly) tormenting rare supernatural entities for personal gain, because Humans Are The Real Monsters and all that.
A few notes:
You’ll notice that over the past week, Jessie has turned into a visually-impaired woman. I chose this partly because the chance to base Jessie on someone I knew was too good to pass up, but mostly because I wanted to deconstruct the overused trope of ‘Disabled Beauty Meets Beast; Love and Understanding Ensue.’ (Examples: the last Fantastic Four movie, nearly any disability in Bollywood, and so on.) Jessie is a romantic interest, but she isn’t more redemptive or less flawed than any other person.
Second note: From now on, updates will be significantly more involved than what I’ve been posting in the past–more mechanics will be introduced, more characters will make an appearance, and we’ll actually get a chance to do some conquering and loving and such. I tried to implement some this week, but the task turned out to be more than I could chew in a single weekend.
As a result, I’ll be posting updates every two weeks from now on. Bug reports will be responded to as fast as possible, though!

? I don’t remember anyone dating in the last one… Then again I mostly remember how much everyone complained about it.
But can we eat her face?

Might’ve been a different Fantastic Four movie. Came out when I was real little, back in '04 or so. The Thing gets jiggy with a blind sculptor, because stereotypes.
Devouring a love interest to increase power is exactly the sort of thing the MC would consider later in the game. Thanks for the inspiration! (Short answer: yes, there will be eating of faces.)

Ah the old series. I think the first one came out in '04 and then there was a sequel. There was a remake a few years ago too. Which people complained even more about compared to the old two.
“This is what you humans do all the time right?”
Now I just need to avoid the tentacle jokes
So we’re not enough of a monster to consider it right away?
