Daydream Believer [WIP] (v0.1)

Hey, so I am making a game about a virtual reality world where people can live out their ideal fantasy lives. It’s currently called Daydream Believer, but I’ve been debating changing it to The Dreams We Share. Let me know which name you prefer.

It’s roughly 5% done, I guess, clocking in at just over 2,600 words (with code). Right now, only the character customization and stats are done, but next on my list is the actual story. I have some general plot points, but it needs fleshing out and then implementation.

I figured, “Hey, if this first part sucks, I should probably find that out before I build a whole game around it and have to redo it all,” so here I am.

To play the short demo, go here: https://dashingdon.com/play/animallover/daydream-believer/mygame/

Let me know what you think, and whether I should add or change anything.

Update July 19 2018: I have spent the last month or so moving to a new house, so life has been hectic. In the process, the computer that I was typing code on was damaged. I’ll have to put this project on hold, unfortunately. I was a little over halfway to V0.2. Maybe someday when I have a new computer and have gotten some rest I’ll return. I’m typing this from my phone by the way. Until then, friends.

I love all the choices for customization! And the thought of a VR type setting sounds interesting. I would definitely read it if you wrote it

I like it, I actually have a somewhat similar story in the works (but it’s different enough that it shouldn’t be an issue).

Seems really good can’t wait for more

This popped up when I tried picking the “smooth” skin for the Harpy

And this popped up when I hit the “play again” button

Love it already, u have my support.

I can be a mermaid  count me in!. Btw can you add an option for your real life gender and your avatar’s gender to differ and perhaps have a different name as well?

Thanks for the bug report, I will fix that for next time

I could add those things, but I’m not sure if they’re entirely relevant. What I mean is that the whole idea is to cast aside your old life and begin anew, so who cares what you were in your old life? If your name happens to differ, or you gender is different, who cares? Just be the you that you want to be. Right?

I was wondering if you will add other races or just keep the ones you already have there, and if the Saurian is supposed to look something like this

or like an actual dinosaur.

The variety of body types is amazing. I can’t even imagine how you’re going to code it, but I love the fact that I can be a mermaid or an arachnid.

I was going to say the same thing that a little information about who we were in the real world might be nice, but if you’re making the choice to say the real world is gone, and not important to the rest of the story I can respect and understand that.

It might be worth it to put a little prompt in there for the reader to make up their own mind about why they want to leave the “real” world behind though. Like right after you talk about the thousands of disenfranchised people desperate for a new start you could add a line like “You had your own reasons to choose life in a virtual world.” Or something idk.

Either way… I love the concept, and wish you the best of luck.

The idea is for the bodies to just be the shapes, and the attributes are the details. Imagine a T-Rex, but like 7 feet tall, with human skin, with normal sized arms and a human head. Then you would add scales by picking Chameleon. That’s what I was envisioning, at least.

I suppose I could work on making the descriptions more clear.

I was just watching Black Mirror and this really reminds me of it :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: don’t know if it’s going to be similar but I’ll just have to keep playing! So far I’m really interested in the game and how it’s going to work out and a VR setting gives a lot to work with. I also LOVE the variety in body shapes and the character creation. As others have said, maybe it would be interesting to add some reason for the player to leave the real world but that’s entirely up to you

I have not watched Black Mirror, but I have watched Sword Art Online and honestly this reminds me of it… minus the whole “die in the game die in real life” thing the first half of the season had…

Most of these races are also in monster musume.

@AnimalLover Is it possible to have different clothing options? Honestly, I’m not a huge fan of the selection we have now. They’re not bad selections, I just can’t see my harpy (or any other race other than human) wearing any of those, aside from the cloak and mask, maybe.

Well both Monster Musume and I took inspiration from the same source, Greek Mythology. That said, I’d be lying if I said I’ve never watched that show. Shhh

What did you have in mind? Maybe something more fantasy oriented?

Yup, basically. Or, you could also try to “design” a specific clothing style for each race. Example, for the mermaids, centaur and nagas (that’s what I’m calling the snake people), you could have that their clothing would only be for their torso (for obvious reasons). But that’s just an idea. I just feel the generic clothing you have now are just too human…

well yeah but i mean all of the main girl’s races save for lala are present.
