@lordirishdas Thank you so much for this contest. Even if I don’t get an entry completed it’s still given me the motivation required to start on my game.
Seven days is scary and I’m definitely feeling the pressure.
I’ve been working hard for the last couple of days on my game. If only I’d worked this hard when I first discovered the contest I might have something close to being finished. Or if I at least stopped changing ideas and had settled earlier. Even two days ago I decided I hated everything I’d written and started again. This is draft three of idea number six now. I’m also trying to learn choicescript as I go along. So wheee fun!
I was rather horrified to discover that I don’t even have five minutes worth of content yet. I’m having to transform a bush into a tree.
But you know what, it’s fun. It’s good to have a deadline. It’s good to have an end goal. I’d love to see more contests, perhaps some with a theme in the future.
Are you planning to publish the games on your site?
@FairyGodfeather I am only to happy to be running this contest. I do plan on running it again next year. I am not really set up to publish from mysite. But have been thinking about setting up a page to link to all the published games. I can hardly wait to see what you manage to crank out.
@CJW yes I use ipage for my hoisting. I pay three years at a time. I have unlimited bandwidth and storage. So that would be awesome. After the contest we will talk this idea over. Lol on your entry.
Sorry, but I don’t want my game published on your site. An article about it might be nice, but I intend to publish as an app. If I understand things correctly, the judges and yourself will be the only viewers. I hope that’s right, because I’m really looking forward to joining this contest.
I suppose they’ll still be able to play, since I’ll likely go straight into Open Beta after the contest concludes, if that makes things feel a little better.
With all due respect, @Lordirishdas thank you for hosting the contesr but I’m of the same opinion as Lucid, is like to have my game published in the App Store under the Hosted games label.
Since this is my first contest I am sort of feeling my way around. It seems some of you do not wish your worked displayed publicly until you are ready for open beta or it is published. I can understand this and propose this. If you do not wish your work to be shown after the contest, then please provide a symposia’s or sample chapter or two, something to show for your hard work in the contest.
Just to be clear I never intended to publish anything, just share some of your wonderful work with the community. But, I do respect that some of you may wish to wait for releasing the story. Thank you.
It’s looking like I’ll just have the first adventure in a longer series available for the contest. I’d hate to have it published until I have it properly polished. However I’m determined to submit something to the contest even if it is just my five minute adventure. Oh it’s terrible to realise all my hard work has just created something shorter than a sample chapter and I really don’t want people to see that and judge me on it. (Well apart from the judges).
So I’d also appreciate it not being linked to from the contest page (at least until it’s finished properly). And maybe you can tweak the rules for next time?
@lordirishdas In contrast, *if* I submit anything, I am more than happy for it the entirety of it to be hosted somewhere for everyone to play. I really want the community to get something (immediate) out of this, not just the contestants.
I do plan on taking all that I have learned from this contest to improve the next one. After it is all said and done. I will take feedback on the contest it’s self to help improve next year. I will work with each writer to help have something up about their story at least, if it is to short for a sample folder.
The reasons behind this contest is simple. To encourage games to be written. I merely wish to share what your blood and sweat can achieve in such a short time. I do believe the community will receive even a small smattering of a story with kind and genuine interest. However, I do not wish to make any uncomfortable, so as long as I have something, a paragraph, a sample page, or chapters up I would be thrilled.
This is no small feet you are aiming for and I believe you should crow with pride at what you have manage to achieve. To write anything meaningful in such a short time, with real life constantly knocking at your door. I applaud those that try. Even if you do not finish it is an effort put in, and you should feel good about what you have done. Most never give it a go.
As someone who has a rough, unfinished piece of work eternally plastered on the IFWiki, I don’t blame anyone for not wanting to have their unpolished game publicly available. Go back after the contest and smooth out the edges you weren’t able to get to, then show the results of your hard work to the world while it truly shines.
Just my advice, anyway. I want everyone to be proud of what they’ve made.
I loved this contest too for the same reasons. It’s given me a motivation to make a game, and there’s a deadline which should have cut out the procrastination. The contest’s been so valuable and I’d love to see it as a yearly event. Although maybe not in the same month as NaNoRenO ((Inter)National Renai Game Writing Month) next year since I am hoping to participate in that as well and it’s in March.
I do love the idea of a contest with a theme instead of just write anything. I used to love playing the JayIsGames themed contest ideas and seeing how everyone interpretted that theme differently.
The contest has taught me a lot though about making a game. Every single one of the games I’ve not finished I’ve learned something from. It’s taught me to be brutal and prune away a lot of my choices. It’s told me to take the chainsaw to the bush and try and turn it into a tree.
I’ve wanted to create a game for years. This is the closest I’ve ever come to making anything. I have notepads filled with ideas and plans and branching arcs and I’ve never actually got my act together to do anything. But your contest and the deadline has helped me achieve something I never thought I’d do. I should have something finished by the end of the month, and even if it gets scored last I’ve still won in getting something done. So I’m happy and for me it is just the taking part.
I do want this game to be a contribution to the community. I want to have it published in its episodes just like my two favourite choice games. But I just know that as soon as the contest is over I’ll want to add back in a few branches and change things and give it a more thorough beta-testing and get it into a state where I’m happy with it.
I don’t want everyone to see me as the person who released such an awful cheesy game. But I do want to enter the contest.
Congratulations on finishing your story @Lucid! I have to say, I’m impressed with the motivation that has been generated by this contest. Fantastic work and vision from @Lordirishdas for setting it up!
