Ah well, got a large demo though, I’ll be postin that soon, hope you guys’ll enjoy it
All that manage to submit are in blue. http://www.lordirish.com/contest.html Congrads to all that finished. For you that tried, you deserve notice. This was no easy task, even though you did not cross the finish line. I would still love to see your work up and published. Good luck to all. I had planned on the 15th to announce the Winners, but I may announce sooner if the judges finish up before hand.
Was that the right link? I’m not on the list.
Also if Headhunter180 actually has something finished, can’t he submit it? It’s only a couple of hours late and there was some confusion about the finish time. I can’t see the harm in it. Or penalise him 1 point for every hour late he was.
You may need to refresh, I have you listed.
*Edit Headhunter already gave me the link so is listed as well.
I will leave a window open until Midnight my time which is 2 hrs and 30 min. Simply because of the confussion.
That’s more than enough time to get a decent ending on things which means enough time to finish to ch2 I’m at the end of ch1 anyways. Thank you @lordirishdas for giving me some time but I would like to be penalized for it as I don’t feel it fair to the others that entered. @Fairygodfeather Thank you for being one of the best defendants a guy could ask for
*edit I may have misunderstood and am possibly taking advantage of it, you say if I already have something completed I may submit in up to 2:15 minutes from now or is that regardless. (Just making sure).
One point per hour sounds fair. Just post here when ready Headhunter so we all know thanks.
Oh looks like a cache problem. I loaded in a different browser and I see I’m all shiny blue. OOOh two and a half more hours, I could do so much in that time. I’m not going to though. I hope more people submit entries.
45 mins. till it is all said and done.
25 mins.
? It’s only been about one hour since you posted your decision.
Opps sorry lack off sleep today
1hr and12mins
Ah well looks like I’m not gonna finish in time, oh well like I said before, I’ve got a sizeable first chapter. (So much so that its actually started to get wonky at points with the stats, I guess it’s to be expected, it is about 110kb)
@headhunter180 I’m sorry to hear that. Can’t you trim it down? Slap an ending on it. Call the first chapter Episode 1 and leave it on a to be continued? Spend what time you have left just tying up the loose end branches?
Nah, @Fairygodfeather if I’m gonna do a first chapter I’m gonna do it right. (Besides, I tend to be rather long winded when writing lol)
Oh okay! Good on you!
Ok I am calling it. The judges have the stories and I am heading to bed.
Writers, I need lots of feedback. Ways I can improve this contest for next year. What did you hate and like.
I was thrilled by so many entries, yet we ended up with only 4 crossing that line. I hope next year we double the number.
Good night all and great job to one and all.
Dang… three prizes and only four entrants… shoulda got my act together and submitted something, unfinished as it might be.
Heck I’m just happy for the “deadline panic” that spurred me on to greater efforts even if I didn’t submit a thing.
The greatest improvement I can think of is getting the contest announced on the main blog. If possible see about getting it officially sponsored by the Choice team. Email them and talk about the possibility. An official contest would be great for publicity and could pull more people into the community, thus getting more games made.
As things were it was hidden away in the forums so few people heard.
The judges were a problem, one bailed out and one of your entrants had to switch to being a judge.
The judging system looks very confusing. It’s an odd number of points that can be given out and not much guidance as to what makes something worth a point. I find 1-10 or 1-100 scales are easier to deal with than 1-25.
How do you judge creativity? How do you judge game experience? (And that ability to give a negative score scared me there).
The play-time bonus just didn’t make sense, because some games will be long and tree like, some will be short, bushy and very replayable, and others yet could be extremely short, well-polished gems. My favourite interactive fiction writer writes games that have just a handful of choices, they’re short, but there’s such a beauty in that shortness.
With two hours being stated as a maximum people will strive to hit it. They will think their game should be that long. Long games get complicated and they can be difficult to finish.
So I think next competition emphasise that it should be a short game. You’re looking for a short story, not a novel. That writing a single episode of a larger story, or an introduction, is also acceptable as long as it’s not been published elsewhere.
Get those of us who finished to write up tips for next year. I’m working on mine and what I did to hit the deadline, what my personal difficulties were in achieving the goals.
My major failing was I didn’t get enough time to beta-test, which of course was my own fault. I’ve not had enough time to polish it. I’m sure there’s still some bugs in there, even though I did run the bug testers and they didn’t find anything. And the idea of someone hitting a game-breaking bug and me not being able to fix it, so they can’t experience the rest of the game is rather stressful for me.
I think the contest was also too broad. Write anything is difficult, there’s no structure. Write anything on the theme of “Time Travel” let’s say, is much easier (at least for me).
Not being able to post publicly about the game and get feedback was also a large problem for me. I wanted to be able to get feedback on my progress. I wanted to be able to chat to folks about my game. I wanted help from the community but I was isolated from it because of the rules. The community can be amazing for assisting with motivation.
@LordIrishDas don’t think of four entries as a failure. Four entries is four more games made than would be made without you. Not to mention the others who’ve done games which they’ve not had the chance to finish. Four games means that you’ve won!
