Speaking of Origami, when I join Crook’s group I get this- “Stunner, Origami and a few others look disappointed in your decision but no one displays any overt hostility.” but Origami joins the same group?
ALSO I might have accidentally doodled a few characters from this game. Can I post those here? Is that a thing I can do? I don’t really know the policy on that sort of thing.
Yeah I instantly disliked Uni the moment she suggested throwing the match just because. Ain’t gonna happen, lady.
@HornHeadFan That is very kind of you to say, thanks! I liked the idea of blending those two genres and I can imagine that the Incredibles will be a big influence too. Plus there’s B Movie style things too so your main enemy might have an army of giant insects or some rampaging dinosaur. I’m still finalising the cast, mostly the villains. I’ve got an idea about the main villain which takes inspiration from Allen Gies awesome Apex Patrol game where you could affect the background of your enemy, so I got something similar in mind.
Haven’t finalised the exact events which will cross into this alternate super powered universe. The player is going to be about 18-20 when they start so depending on where they live they might have experienced some events from 1933 to 1953 when the game starts (since 53 was the year Casino Royale was published) so for example an English character might have grown up in the Blitz. Still finalising how different WW2 was and whether it provided a catalyst for super powers on the eve of the Cold War. I think the intention is for each chapter to involve a different mission in a different year, leading up to 1962 and the Cuban Missile Crisis.
As for its own thread, well I’ve found that I don’t really like to talk about something in a thread until I have some kind of demo to put out alongside it, and I’m also working on a ww2 Resistance game, so not right now. Thanks for asking about it though, nice to have a fellow writer take such interest!
@Caligae, I’m sure everyone would love to see them. I know I would!
I wonder if everyone would still dislike Uni if I flipped the situation and had her be your first round opponent and she offered to take a dive for you so you’d be guaranteed a C with the agreement you do the same for her if matched again during her test?
Basically do folks object to anyone taking a dive on principle or do they object to Uni benefiting from the dive as is currently the case?
Nope I wouldn’t because being a superhero is all about helping others and plus it would help win bonus points with uni later on. By the way my reading list is community college hero at #1 death reapers contract at number 2 when in rome at number 3 vendetta at number 4 and team zero at number 5
@Caligae, I freaking love them! DG’s aviator cap, t shirt and general expression are right on! I think I wrote her with goggles but the domino mask works! And Hedonist is great. You even managed to make him look all marbley.
Hell, I should have asked you to do some art. I had no idea we had such good artists on the forums.
I haven’t had the chance to comment on this WIP yet. I just wanted to say that I find it very enjoyable even though I’ve only read 2-3 chapters. The idea of superheroes interacting with each other has always been intriguing to me. I’ve even found myself inspired to write by reading CCH. Keep up the good work!
I would say… depending on how I played my MC, some characters would probably be totally up for that. Those MCs might also be the ones who also wanted to go find out more about Crook, for instance, and interfere with police investigations.
The MC that I like best is a pragmatist and feels that cheating in school, especially a school that’s partially designed to save your life in combat situations, ruins the point of the exercise. Said MC might have been MORE offended if Uni offered to take a dive for her instead.
@HornHeadFan wowo thank you. I meant to give DG goggles, but I guess my colours are way too muddy to tell? Wh-oops. I’ll have to remember the next time I draw her.
If it’s okay with you, I’ll probably continue to doodle a few things here and there and post them? Your writing is a pretty good muse for doodling.
@EarnBoogie, that’s a very nice compliment. Thank you. It’s very cool that you’ve jumped into writing as well. I started writing CCH after becoming engrossed in Heroes Rise and Deathless so I guess you could say they inspired me and I convinced myself, “Hey, I can do this too!”
And yes, I think behind the scenes interactions between heros can provide a lot of material. Sadly many cartoons, movies and comics limit non combat interactions to the obligatory “monitor duty” type scene. But full relationships can and should be explored including friendship, trust issues, romance, rivalries, jealousy, etc.
I plan for most of the characters to survive through the series, although a few may fall and others may disapper/reappear for various reasons, so I figure after 3 books most should have decently explored relationships.
@Caligae, please keep drawing all you want! When I get my web site up, I’d love to have those pics posted.
@StarWarsMaster, I’ll do what I can to remain on top of your list! From what I’ve heard , those are some quality works you listed (I’ve only read WIR and loved it).
@Fiogan, I’m so happy that you can create different MCs with different motivations/views. I’m hoping to add more flexibility to how you react to situations and try to give options other than wide eyed enthusiasm.
@majinassasin12 The whole tactician and detective class seems like a Batman thing to me. Using gadgets and no superpowers. Not complaining though. I found it more enjoyable to play in that style for this type of game as well.
Is the link in the first post of the thread the most recent edition?
One thing I noticed was when you choose between the first crime scene and going to school on time, you seemingly don’t get any advantage of doing so, despite the fact that I was a detective I didn’t learn anything other than what I heard about on the news some time later. I’ve only played once, I dunno if there was an advantage to coming early to school, but there seemingly was no downside to it either, not as much as a furrowed brow.
Another thing was in the cafeteria, where I was promptly dismissed from my first choice table and as a result got to sit alone. While it did impress upon me that whole high-school clique mentality and actually stirred a bit of emotion, I would have liked to have the choice of at least trying another table if the first one failed.
I made Stoic smile twice, yet I didn’t see any text saying our relationship had improved, and I had come to expect it since I saw it with Dirty Girl and a few others.
Other than that, very fun and well written game, although personnally maybe a bit heavy on the text in some places. I generally skip to the next choice if I see more than 3-4 paragraphs of text. Oh and romance wise the only action I got was with the professor.
Looking forward to seeing this finished.
Thanks for all the constructive feedback. Yes the link on the first page of the thread is the most recent version. I’ve tweaked the scene at Burgerz n Ringz a few times (for example, I added the shortcut option) and I might add some small extra info or clue that you find if you go to justify the risky decision you made to go in the first place. Obviously the basic info is needed for the narrative, but a little.
I was very much shooting for the high school clique vibe in the cafeteria. Everyone is wrapped up in their own little groups at that moment.
I’m working on inserting a few more choices in some of the text heavy sections. Others had suggested the same. And don’t worry, being nice to Stoic is designed to somewhat affect the ending. I stopped inserting relationship modifier notifications in the text mid story because those relationship meters use fair math and thus readers wouldn’t understand how that works.
I might change the combat stats like low, zap, etc to a simple 1,2,3 number system since those will never go down. The more I think about it, that approach would probably make some combat coding a lot easier.
I hope you keep reading when I post the next update hopefully by the end of July.
I would definately want to see a benefit/downside to picking either choice, whether you go early or check the crime scene. An additional clue would be great, maybe a hint of who the Contrarian is even. Perhaps get some extra friend time in with one of the students if you come in early, or if you come in late, worsen the relationship with the headmaster maybe. In fact not getting one exclusive benefit by itself would be enough of a downside to justify it, as long as you get a benefit whichever you choose.
If you’re not gonna add in anymore notifiers signifying relationship changes then I would suggest removing them altogether, because like I said, I came to expect them. Otherwise you could just change it to some text, like Stoic Relationship Improved, or the Walking Dead approach - Stoic will remember that… or something. It’s nice knowing that what you’ve chosen has an impact.
I’ll definately be keeping up with this, very nice work.
One of the characters I liked/hated the most was Nil. It was great having a character like that in the story. Forcing everyone to be wary of who they share secrets with was interesting. The perks/consequences etc.
