Community College Hero: Releasing Soon

@OtherGrimm If your role has either sneaking or speed, then you can win capture the flag. Otherwise you’ve got zero chance. Honestly, I’m not opposed to the idea of the different roles in theory, but the fact that certain roles just objectively aren’t as successful as others (Tactician, for example, is basically the “I Win” button if you know what you’re doing) means there’s not really much point in picking anything else unless you really want to be a certain role and don’t care that you won’t be able to do as much.

Actually, if you decide to use a distance attack on Origami, you will win Capture the Flag as well. Not sure about anything else.

@Leingod That’s basically what I was complaining about. It’s more or less penalizing anyone who’s not a Tactician - some roles are just penalized more than others (mostly Brawler, as I mentioned earlier). Personally, I think that’s a big problem that should be fixed, ideally by making it possible for each role to succeed in each scenario (and better yet, removing the roles entirely and letting players choose their own stats, as I suggested before).

I like the concept, and I do like the writing, but the complete lack of balance is something that bothers me. Maybe I’m the only one. I’m just giving my thoughts on how the game could be better.

I finally got all the secrets and all A’s in the class go me

@StarWarsMaster
Last I recall, you can only romance Uni, Dirty Girl, Tress, Stunner, Mob, and Crook.

I want to be able to romance the hillbilly girl too.

@NateTheGreat Yeah, but I can never bring myself to do it, and it doesn’t feel much like a victory to me. It’s hard to bask in victory when you’re feeling like an enormous heel.
@OtherGrimm I agree that it’s really unbalanced, though I’d rather go for the option of giving the other roles a chance at success equal to the Tactician rather than removing the roles completely.
@jcury If you’re talking about Unicorn Fish Girl, she’s Georgian, which is not “hillbilly.” Even if Georgia was hillbilly country, she’s a Southern belle if she’s anything. And you can already romance her (well, you WILL, you can’t right now).

Can’t type much now as I’m at work, but if balance issues are the biggest compliant, I’m fine with that. Balance issues can be fixed. Hell, I really plan for beta to be mostly about balance issues and variable issues. Everyone has been very helpful going ideas about the story itself but I’ve pretty much drafted the rest of it now and I’ll most likely not make any huge changes to the narrative.

So issues about “this combat style is too nerfed/useless” or “this test is too hard/ easy” or “money should play more of a role” etc etc can all be tweaked in beta.

I am keeping the combat styles though as I think they encourage replayability, they keep me from having to code tons of different stat combinations, and they keep readers from unintentionally creating characters who excel at nothing. Can’t you hear the complaints now? " I aced all tests and still didn’t win at the end, this game sux and is impossible to win. 1 star!"

Okay question regarding the art for the cover/icon.

I’m working out a deal with a very talented artist and we’re discussing what it will look like. I’ve narrowed it down to 3 options.

  1. a simple Brady Bunch style graphic with sihlouttes of the main 9 characters from neck up. Each square would have a solid background color like green for Crook, pink for Uni, red for Tress, etc. Pros: Very clean, simple and colorful. Would probably get people’s attention in App Store. The icon could just be the center square. No idea who that would be. Cons: not a great work of art. Very basic.

  2. A pile of books (HELL, Defense, etc), a graded paper on a desk/tabke. Perhaps a backpack slung over a chair. A domino mask laying on the graded paper. Pros: could be intriguing and gives and idea of the flavor of the story without giving anything away. Cons: some may view it as dull. Icon would probably be domino mask over paper for some contrast, but still not as eyecatching as 1.

  3. Essentially a comic book quality cover. Think Marvel’s Secret Wars 2, issue 1, where you have characters looking at/reacting to the shadow of an unseen character. That would be the MC, of course. Could feature a few characters like Uni or Crook hanging out by the Speck entrance, leaning on railing, etc. Pros: would look awesome and ulta professional. Many comic fans would love it. Cons: most expensive option. Not sure if all the details would translate well to App Store, etc. Some readers may not like seeing detailed pics of the characters.

Thoughts?

First one is a good middle ground and allows players to have a idea of what the characters look like

You should use the college picture one like they did for sky high movie. Also maybe add a couple of people fuming around the tip if the building with jet streams or something that would look cool I would certainly buy your game!

I like the first idea - I think it’s very iconic and would stick out in a helpful sort of way. When I think over the icons/covers from past CS games, it’s the simple ones, with a more basic color scheme, that stand out in my mind. (:

Hey it’s me and again I’m looking for a link!

@P0RT3R …You realize it’s the same link that’s on the first page, right? There’s not a new link every time the game gets updated.

@HornHeadFan I figured you probably wouldn’t want to get rid of the roles, since you went through a bit of effort to add them in the first place, I was just stating my preference. I’m not a fan of limitations, and there are a lot of stat combos I’d like to do, that I can’t. Having the roles included isn’t a major irritation for me, though - I just think it should be possible for every role to have a way to succeed at the various challenges.

As for the icon, 2 is the one that would appeal most to me. I think the ‘Brady Bunch’ thing would look silly, but I seem to be alone on that one…

@OtherGrimm yes I know that but the problem is, I use my phone to acces the forum so that means I have to scroll all the way up.

love the game

LINKREMOVED

Here you go, @PORT3R. I have the same problem because during the day I’m on my phone as well. You should just click the “full site” at the bottom of the mobile screen. It lets you click up to the 1st page of a thread.

@OtherGrimm, please keep hanging around! You can be the Balance Police when it gets into beta.

I agree that all roles should get chances to shine. At this point, I know Brawlers have an easy time beating up Mob and they can really do some damage to Rain and Shine (assuming they are Level 2), but I’ll have to give them more love. That being said, a game like Capture the Flag really does favor the quick (Bullet, Stinger), the clever (Detective, Tactician) and folks with distance attacks, assuming they are willing to be quite harsh (Stinger, Sniper). So yes, the Brawler is the only class that has a bad match-up there.

General Comment: Please keep giving feedback on the art question. I want to make a decision soon. Obviously I’m torn between what looks “cool” versus what might be most App Store friendly.

I think either 1 or 3 would be best.

If you have the extra money go for 3, if not 1 is fine. I would think that the flashier the better for most.

I’ll chip in an’ say 1, preferably!
