I was talking about several of the RO’s and other characters with my friend, and she said I should give you the option to choose Aeson’s gender. This, of course, would change a lot of stuff coding/story wise, but it could be done easily and it’d be really fun.
I know there’s a forum post about gender-switching RO’s and how it makes them seem less “real” unless it’s done very convincingly so it doesn’t feel like the world revolves around the MC (even though, in this case, it does). But, I feel as if his personality is so specific, it really won’t matter.
Would anyone be in favor of that? I know some feathers have been ruffled about Aeson’s locked-in gender, and the more choice, the better, right?.
I’ve played games where you can change the gender of ROs and, for me, some games (Mecha Ace) didn’t pull it off too well and made the characters less “real” compared to other games (The Lost Heir). Gender switching basically shines a beacon that says “This is an important character! Be mindful how you treat them!”. I also feel like if it’s done for one RO, it should be done for all of them.
Granted, Aeson will be a LOT more pivotal to the story and I, for one, want the option to have a female Bestower (to add to the Greek tragedy I have planned in my head) XD
To me it seems like the MC and Aeson should be opposite genders like they are the opposite sides of the same coin, but I’m not sure how that would work for the non-binary gender option.
In general though, I think the choice would be nice to have.
Yes I would like that too.
I’ve thought about this a bit more and I think it only matters if certain scenes are specifically revolving around a characters gender. The most obvious one being romance scenes. They will definitely be different depending on this. That is unless you choose to write them in a way where it doesn’t matter.
The character descriptions will also be another obvious change. There is probably a few other things that could come up but perhaps this can be covered by changing certain parts of a scene depending on what choice you make. The thing is I have no idea how much of a pain this will be to code.
Lmao, that’s a very appropriate typo hahaha
I have honestly no firm opinion on that point.
On the one hand, I guess offering the choice will please the majority.
On the other hand, I feel like making gender interchangeable can hinder the appreciation I have of a character. They feel less like their own person and more like a factotum for the reader.
And if you make Aeson gender-fluid, why not the other ROs?
So to answer your question, do what you prefer. Artistic integrity and all.
I actually really dislike it when ROs get gender switched. If you gave Aeson a slightly different personality depending on the gender, then that might help since both versions could be seen as their own person rather than just some flip-flopped character, but that would probably cause you difficulties. Besides, if you did that for Aeson, then you’d have to do it for everyone else. I think it’s best to stick to the current gender, but you’re the writer so it’s up to you.
I prefer fixed gender, Like in this time he is a boy deal with Fate. It goes well, and gods don’t give a dam about gender for romantic options. Hell they have zoo sex half of time! . Besides, my character would hate him her zir their.
The reason I prefer fixed gender characters is because I want to see the characters as the authors that create them see them first.
I’m in the story that the author created - if I create the story I’d have the characters different … so I want the characters like you’d see and write them as…
if any of this makes sense. idk.
Makes perfect sense. At the end of the day, we’re playing through a story, not a dating sim. In fact, I think it’d be mildly amusing to have Aeson mildly smitten with the MC, and give us the option to either encourage/lead him on or snuff it out quickly.
Thank you for your input. I can now write with confidence and breathe a sigh of relief at all the coding I wont have to do.
I’m guessing we are meeting them in the upcoming chapter right?
So Aeson will be gender-locked? Cool. He can be the Chewie to my Han, the Cyclops to my Wolverine, the Sasuke to my Naruto XD
id like that option for the bestower, since is more fun
(i know all people have their own way of thinking, but for example i will never play a game as female, for me is unfair to have a character that add history wise denied to certain public gender , be it gay, lesb, etc
a good example of characters that add history wise to a game will be mass effect, Ashley and Kaidan are both similar experience for the players yet with some minus changes
)
then again im not the writer and i think you should do what you want, not what the majority suggest
Ok I’m starting to realize how much the weekly updates spoiled me. (counts the hours til Chapter 4)
Normally I don’t like gender-swapped love interests, but I think Calypso is the only female one right? In that case it would be nice so lesbian players and other people interested in women had the same choices as gay players or people interested in men.
There is two female romances.
Calypso and Avery (the girl in the infarmery).
Yeah, as of now only two have been formally introduced, but there is one more on the way; Sakakawea.
I’m totally kidding. Her name is Sage.
