Btw (don’t know if it drowned in the thread), but if you choose not to kill the brown-haired boy and check your personality stats you get the error message:
choicescript_stats line 155: Non-existent variable ‘wit_text’
If you kill the guy the personality page works fine.
Yet, Poseidon created the horse and Athena taught men crafts and gave men democracy. Hades ensures that the dead stay dead and that the Titans are locked away in Tartarus.
That depends on which version of the myth Rohie’s going with.
There are just as many versions of those myths that say:
Poseidon and Medusa willingly had sex in Athena’s temple
Athena punished Medusa for this
Athena turned Arachne into a spider because Arachne had killed herself upon losing to Athena in a weaving competition and Athena saved her life
Persephone went with Hades willingly, but Demeter was unable to let go of her child
I personally think your versions make more sense with the roles they play in mythology (except for Persephone’s) but based on Rohie’s writing I wouldn’t be surprised if they are kept to a more family-friendly version.
I can’t find the formal version of the Poseidon and Medusa myth I had read, but that was the version I had read and known up until about middle school.
One of the big issues with discussing consent in ancient Greek myths is that for the Greeks, having willing, consensual sex with a woman outside of marriage was the same thing as raping a woman regardless of her marriage status.
For Arachne, I’m going off of Ovid’s version.
Persephone, like the one with Medusa, is one I had read when I was younger.
[memory don’t fail me now, so please correct me if I’m wrong]
I think at least the Poseidon myth that @Zilla is referring to is Ovid’s version. The Arachne myth is also from Ovid. Though that version isn’t just about Arachne being a better weaver but she also weaved in into her entry Zeus being the womaniser that he is (among other things, but basically it was a critique against the gods). So that was a big insult :)) hence her punishment as a spider.
As for the abduction of Persephone, I think it’s Virgil’s version that has her follow him willingly. I’m fairly certain that there are myths that have Persephone even eat the pomegranate seeds out of her own volition, rather than Hades tricking her into eating it.
Though from what I know, Hades and Persephone are one of those few couples that at least seem to be happily married. Hades is pretty faithful to her, and vice versa. It’s also interesting that despite Persephone being allowed half the year with her mother, she’s never really mentioned with her, after she marries Hades.
((though if anything I really want to see Hades flip out if he ever found out that Zeus at least tried to seduce his wife – at least twice I might add))
Also, on an off topic but might be tangentially related point, Odysseus was more afraid of meeting Persephone than Hades :)) this somehow makes me giggle
The Ovid version of Arachne, turns out is a mix of both Zilla’s and my view:
Pallas could not find a fleck or flaw–even Envy can not censure perfect art–enraged because Arachne had such skill she ripped the web, and ruined all the scenes that showed those wicked actions of the gods; and with her boxwood shuttle in her hand, struck the unhappy mortal on her head,–struck sharply thrice, and even once again. Arachne’s spirit, deigning not to brook such insult, brooded on it, till she tied a cord around her neck, and hung herself. Pallas moved to pity at the sight, sustained and saved her from that bitter death; but, angry still, pronounced another doom : `Although I grant you life, most wicked one, your fate shall be to dangle on a cord, and your posterity forever shall take your example, that your punishment may last forever!
I’m still not sure where I pulled that version of Medusa, but in even earlier myths she was just a monster, and later Greek writers chose to flesh her out.
As for Persephone and Hades, their marriage being so happy is why I prefer (I think) Virgil’s version. It gives Persephone agency in her choice and doesn’t have the moral that you can win a woman’s heart by kidnapping her and tricking her to spend the rest of time with you.
(I just want to see Hades punch Zeus tbh)
(Persephone was hardcore)
“Please raise your hand if you’ve been personally victimised by Zeus Cronuson”
Persephone is actually one of my fave ladies because she’s pretty cool and hardcore, in as much as she could’ve been back then anyway. She has the epithet of “the Iron Queen” – FROM ODYSSEUS OUT OF ALL PEOPLE – this is so ridiculously badass for me, for a goddess that’s not particularly known/attached to warfare. Though to be fair, she’s queen of the underworld, so that definitely gets points.
Edit: @Zilla. I suppose so. My MC is gonna get the loving family she deserves >:C (so hell yes for a nice step-mom, please @Rohie)
Greek mythology though isn’t very well known for being consistent, so you have a sandbox to play in tbh.
I’m also following most of Virgil’s version in regards to Hades+Persephone. At least, the origin. I contemplated using the kidnapping version, with all the trickery and scheming, but that Hades just didn’t have the same personality as my Hades, and if I did end up going with that version, I’d have to create some intricate backstory as to why Hades kidnapped Demeter’s kid. [quote=“Zilla, post:821, topic:15482”]
Also if the MC is Hades kid would that make Persephone their step-mom?

If she likes you, she will happily claim you; there are so many factors.
I adore Persephone, and I always have. My favorite thing about her is her transformation from this eternal flower child to this bad ass Queen of the Underworld who makes mortals invoke her name in curses.
I also love her Hera-esque trait of vengeance in some myths. I mean, she turned Minthe and Leuce into trees and plants to keep Hades from seducing them. She reminds me of CoG Athena in a way, but of course, they have very different personalities.
Confession: I’ve headcanon’d her as both. She will wear her flowercrowns while invoking fear in the hearts of mortals (Hades having heart eyes over this gives me life). Praying for her to have an entrance that simultaneously is both badass and having her husband basically go “YES THE WIFE IS HERE YOU LOSERS ARE IN FOR IT NOW”
Another confession: I’m going to make her and Hades my MC’s parents because at this rate, THE CHILD DESERVES TO BE HAPPY ;A; (and if MC romances Adonis, like step-mom like daughter? --> “good choice child” “thanks mom”)
Persephone’s entrance is very climactic. It’s my second favorite entrance, second to Aeson’s. They are both very dramatic people who should be on Broadway. [quote=“squarelyblue, post:824, topic:15482”]

Gods, that’s hilarious. Especially because of Persephone’s attempt to steal the mortal Adonis away from Aphrodite all those years ago.
This would be the kind of irony that the gods would probably roll their eyes at.
I’m very very excited for Persephone. If it’s anything like broadway she should have her own chorus and song and dance number, complete with dramatic lighting and maybe Lin Manuel rapping.
That sound amazing. xD
And is think my MC will be off to the sidelines and being terrible split between finding that funny/amazing or groaning with second-hand embarrassment and facepalming (at least regarding Aeson, I don’t know if she dares to outright facepalm at a goddess).
My MC is herself far more snarking/sarcastic than outright dramatic.
Oh my gods ( !!!)! I was already looking forward to “meeting” Aeson but now i barely know what to do with myself!
There is this little voice in the back of my head chanting : “Aeson, Aeson, Aeson…x infinity”
… What have you done to me.
